The free download can also unlock the doors – although phone thieves still need the key to drive off. If the car is stolen, the device will track its location.

To use the app, buyers must opt for Volvo’s £325 On Call crash alert system, which includes a 3G SIM card hidden in the model.

A five-year SIM subscription is included in the package.
