CorePlayer (formerly TCPMP) on Windows Mobile 5 Smartphone

CorePlayer,an alternative media player from the creators of TCPMP is not that exciting as it first sounded! The fact that it is no longer free says it all -- updates on commercial applications take a long time as they want to release the best version unlike free versions ;)

A quick summary of the features found missing in CorePlayer v1.0 ::
1)No BenchMarking can be done using this Version.
2)Strange but true - You cannot select all the files at once to a playlist, instead you need to select each file to add to the playlist.
3)The worst part - You did all the hard work by selecting so many files, now you want to add few more files to the list, oops the previous playlist is gone with the wind.So unfriendly an app!!

It sports a cool GUI,pretty smooth I should say.Interface is neatly worked on but the features are still to come.Let's wish the CorePlayer team immense success for their future versions!!

For now,we can satiate ourselves using this free version instead.

Linux on HTC Typhoon - An Alternative Approach

My previous post on booting Linux might seem cumbersome to Linux noobs like me ;) hence this post.Credit goes to Apoorva for his ideas!I was desperate to boot Linux the other day and Apoorva gave me few tips which eliminated the need of a Linux PC to make a bootable image on to miniSD.Ok now lets get started::

Prerequisites::

Firstly, use your memory card reader to fill your memory card with 'zeroes'.
  • Open WinHex ->Tools->Open Disk -> Now select 'Removable Media' ->Press OK.
  • Press Ctrl + A to select all the blocks on the card.
  • Right click on the selected blocks and Press 'Edit' -> Fill Block.
  • Make sure that 'Fill with HEX Values' is 00 and dont' change any other settings and hit OK.
  • Now,click on OK on all the prompts and wait for sometime for the operation to be done.
  • Now click on File-> Restore Image -> Select the .img file downloaded from Vivien's Site and you are good to go!!
  • Now,insert the card into your Typhoon and hold the 'Camera' button towards the right and gently push the power button for half a second.
  • It will boot to a white screen, wait until you see 'SD MFG image<- Press this key Start Download Download SD image?' and push the 'Volume low' button towards the left.

There you go,you will the TUX nicely sitting on your Typhoon. This project is in development stages, hence it is recommended only for enthusiasts like me ;)

This guide also applies to HTC Hurricane and HTC Tornado.

p.s::This operation makes your memory card to show up as 14MB after restoring the image even if your card is more than 32MB.To avoid this,we may partition(15MB) the memory card and restore image to that partition. If you are done with experimenting, you need to fill the card with zeroes again and then Format it from Windows ;)

2 GB miniSD on HTC Typhoon doubling as a Pen Drive

It is not possible to use WM5 Typhoon as a mass storage device yet but there sure is a way to use the massive miniSD card as a storage device!!I have been using a 2 GB miniSD card in my HTC Typhoon. Was charmed after seeing my device work flawlessly with such big a flash memory card,Nokia Smartphones definitely cannot hold them though ;)

Get yourself a sleek looking memory card reader and pop in the miniSD card to double it as a mass storage device, what say??That is what I call as 'productivity'!!

Booting Linux on HTC Typhoon-A Comprehensive guide

I ran into sooo many difficulties trying to taste Linux on my Typhoon.Followed Vivien's guide to no avail.Had a hard time because I'm a complete Linux noob.

Tools you require...
1)Htc Typhoon ;)
2)Memory Card Reader
3)miniSD card (min 16MB)
4)Linux miniSD Image
4)Linux Basics
5)Lotta Determination!

The Method ::
Step 1)Simply copy the image to the card using the following command(simply copying it to miniSD in Windows would not help!!):
# dd if=minisd.img of=/dev/sdx
This command should be run at shell prompt in any flavour of Linux(I'm using Ubuntu Dapper). This command 'dd' is used to create a bootable image on the disk(here miniSD).

We need to give the exact path of the miniSD image - for this, right click on miniSD image file on your Linux machine and click on 'Properties' and copy the path which starts with '/media/Pendrive/' for the 'if' block. For the 'of' block,we need to know the path of the miniSD card reader.Generally it is /dev/sdx -- here 'x' varied depending on the exact path.

(Thank you Apoorva(Linux Whizz) for the contribution)!!

Turn off your phone, install your miniSD under the battery. Press and hold the camera button (on the right), then press the power button (on the top) for half a second or so, then release the power button, and wait for a white screen to appear. If the splash screen logo appears instead you pressed the power button for too long, wait for the phone to boot then turn it off again and try again. The white screen should read:

SD MFG image
<- Press this key Start Download Download SD image?

You have 5 seconds to press the volume down button (on the left) to start loading the image. If you were not quick enough or something went wrong you will see the tricolor SPL screen. Power down your phone and try again.

Now the EOL bootloader should be loading (black screen written in white). If it sucessfully found 'IMAGE.BIN' on the miniSD, it will load it after waiting 5 seconds. If it does not, checking the few error messages you may get and trying to figure out what went wrong is your only option.

To turn off your phone again, you will have to remove the battery.

This method will not install Linux on your Typhoon. It is loaded on to RAM temporarily. To boot back into WM5 or WM 2003 SE,simply reboot!!

Stay tuned for a video demonstration of Linux on Typhoon. Will be posting it as soon as my Ubuntu is repaired on my Desktop!!

Note::This project is developed by Vivien Chappelier. Some text in this article is verbatim from his site.

HTC Typhoon as USB Storage yet?

Its been a long vacation!Did anyone figure out how one could use your smartphone (wm5) as a handy 'USB Storage' device?Well, after a lotta research on HTC Typhoon's front :: I landed on a no man's land I should say.We are falling short of USB function drivers which are Hardware dependent.

Interestingly,WM5torage works just fine with Motorola MPX 220 and not with Typhoon brand of phones :: Ridiculous, aint' it?

My Typhoon goes as far as displaying that my phone is detected on the Computer but not any further! The USB drive letter is not displayed.Hope there is a workaround soon.

For Pocket PC users (even WM 2003) can use Card Export.

Browse Internet on Windows Smartphone using ADSL(or even dial up) connection via Bluetooth

Hope we had an application similar to GnuBox for our smartphone (Windows) such that we can access Internet (for free) on our mobile over Bluetooth connection from PC.We need not have GPRS service anymore!!

Windows Smartphone
Bluetooth Dongle (connected to PC - Win XP)
ActiveSync 4.2
Internet Connection (ADSL is better ;) )

Firstly, set up your smartphone for ActiveSync over Bluetooth. Then,in the Connection settings of ActiveSync 4.2,make sure that all options are checked as shown on the above picture.
On your smartphone :: Open Pocket IE-->Menu-->Options-->Connections-->Make sure the settings are same as shown towards the right. Below is a screenshot of Internet on my phone using this above mentioned feature.Make sure that you are connected to ActiveSync for this trick to work.

Installing WM5 ROM on HTC Typhoon(Krome IQ 700)

Owing to much confusion with a recent site change of WM5 ROM for HTC Typhoon,I had to recycle the post here.

Firstly, download the latest ROM from Ronswens' site.
Most of the confusion starts now --- Few of my friends complained about the error during installation. This occurs mostly due to the version of SPL on your phone. It should be upgraded to SPL 1.01.0109.

So,lets kickstart our venture into WM5.Follow this ***** link ***** right away. First we need to Unlock the phone followed by flashing the compatible SPL 1.01.0109.Now,we need to use mtty1.42.exe to flash WM5 ROM on your phone. Please wait untill it totally installs,'cos you notice a technical snag during installation.Ignore it and wait for the message : "Installation successful!!"

Download manager for Windows Smartphone :: DManagerSP

I'm sooo used to using download client on my PC (which accelarates your download speeds) and recently I have been using a similar kinda application on my Smartphone known as DManagerSP.It does a fairly decent job.It comes handy when you need to download files while travelling.Download it here.

To ensure maximum productivity, you might follow this trick ::

2)Now use Xbar to copy the link and paste it in a new text file (DManagerSP's favorites text file found in DManagerSp's installation folder @ /program files) using pocket WordPad.
3)Now you can open DManagerSP-->click on menu-->Favorites and Download the file!!

My Experiences with WM5 ROM on HTC Typhoon

I have been using my Typhoon for quite some time now,one and a half year to be precise. To be honest,I loved my Typhoon more than any other phone I used till date but that soon died away with the release of Magneto a.k.a Windows Mobile 5 ROM enabled phones.I was desperate to try this latest innovation on my Typhoon but in vain.I managed to lay my hands on a 'so-called' wm5 ROM but I heard that there were many flaws associated with that ROM!!

I kept on researching for a far more compatible ROM on my Typhoon untill I laid my hands on Ronswens' WM5 ROM v4.0.I had to perform a ROM backup 'cos Krome guys would not provide me a ROM to download @ Krome.com.au I loved the WM5 ROM on my Typhoon more than anything else. After a week's usage of this ROM,Ronswens released an enhanced version of wm5 ROM;v4.2.This version blends perfectly with my Typhoon.

Few of my observations with this splendid ROM ::

1)This ROM is cooked from a leaked version of the Magneto which had a problem with memory management (Memory Leaking).

2)Soon after I reboot the phone,I'm left with 9.25 MB of free RAM left. This free RAM goes on decreasing while you use so many apps that are installed on your phone. To get the RAM back to healthy levels, you need to use CeleTask(Long Press Home) -->Menu-->5-->3 (free memory).

3)Camera application is inherited from WM2003 ROM,so ailry good quality of pictures!!Wanna check the quality of Pics :: www.kirankonathala.com

4)I have compiled a list of Apps which are compatilbe with wm5 enabled Typhoon.Check them out here.

5)Battery backup after installing WM5 is quite good too.I have a full one day's backup even after general use of GPRS,CAM,Calls,...

6)I can now use Opera 8.60 (ppc version) for downloading stuff directly to the Mini SD card.

7)A clean and new GUI with WM5!!The all important Windows Media Player 10 rocks on my typhoon!!

8)I use my typhoon as a bluetooth modem. The only problem with this is it sports Error 777 when I try to dial it.Resolution::Toggle bluetooth using Bluetooth toggler (found in accessories). If it doesnt' work,we need to restart the phone. It should definitely work now!

Bottom Line :: WM5 v4.2 is still due from Ronswens. It is supposed to be A2DP enabled ROM.Eagerly waiting for it.....

Minimo 0.016 Review :: Ups and Downs

Let me take the pleasure of introducing few pros and cons of Minimo 0.016 on your WM5 Smartphone.

Finally I can make use of Cache on Storage Card and download files directly to Storage Card.

I can easily close the open tabs on Minimo which seemed next to impossible on the previous version of Minimo.

I was successful in opening more than 2 windows in the browser but am sorry to say that the amount of free memory (RAM) is too low which leads to your device being 'too slow' or 'unresponsive'.A better thing would be to visit all the sites via google.com/xhtml gateway which might help you in the nagging memory issue!!

I must say that Minimo is still not the best choice for Smartphones but on the flip side,Pocket PC users can enjoy this marvel to the fullest!!We should wait for memory optimization still.

Windows Mobile 5 Smartphone Applications (Typhoon)

Well,I have been successfully using WM5 ROM by Ronswens and am happy to say that I'm a happier customer of HTC Typhoon (bought it on Jan 2005) .WM5 ROM really outshines WM 2003 SE ROM.I started experimenting heavily using this ROM and am successful so far except for A2DP profile thingy which may be sorted out pretty soon by Ronswens!!

I have compiled a list of applications which I have been successfully using for quite sometime now.Feel free to add your fav. apps to this growing list of WM5 apps::

  • Agile Messenger : Good old messaging client (Yahoo,MSN,AOL). =>Download<=
  • TCPMP Core Player : The best media player (AVI,MPEG videos created using Lathe). =>Download<=
  • Opera Browser 8.60 : A full review is pending on this niche product!!Thank you Opera for the ultimate experience! =>Download<=
  • Opera mini 2.0 : The world's best light-weight browser(lesser memory occupied) with download capabilities which also enables us to save images for the first time in Smartphone history! =>Download<=
  • Minimo 0.015 (working Partially) : Doug Turner needs to work hard on this splendid product. Its in an early beta stage, hence not running to its fullest potential in my Typhoon!!(Download the CAB file and extract files using WinRAR.Copy the extracted folder to your phone's storage card and launch minimo.exe file) =>Download<=
  • SlovoEd English Dictionary : Well, this app. really rocks!!I would recommend you if you are a student(prep for TOEFL/GRE/College/School) or a job holder!!The entire dictionary in one slim device, dats what is innovation!! =>Download<=
  • SmartExplorer : This app plunges the loop hole in wm smartphones by enabling us to transfer files via Bluetooth. =>Download<=
  • SpHelper : This is a nifty utility which enables you to run Pocket PC apps. in a rather friendly manner ;) I found it useful when am using Minimo,Opera 8.60 PPC Browser. =>Download<=
  • Tweaks2k2 : Are you so lazy to manually RegEdit your smartphone to achieve few important tasks??Well, this app. is for you then!Have a go at it!! =>Download<=
  • XBar 3 : This tiny app helps you copy/paste,launch/close apps and a lot more!An must use utility!! =>Download<=
  • Pocket Controller Professional : Well, from now on,I will be posting screenshots of apps running on my Typhoon and its possible using this app. alongwith MS Power Toys. =>Download<=
  • ClearVue Suite 2.41 (SmartPhone) : I had to open few important word documents and then began my journey to Zero-in on a fine app for this purpose.Though the Zooming feature needs to be worked a bit,its a better option for the time-being!! =>Download<=

Windows Mobile 5 on HTC Typhoon a.k.a Krome IQ700

I'm very excited to say that I have been successful in installing Windows Mobile 5 on my Windows Smartphone.I had to wait for so many days to test WM5 and finally, here I am,posting my 10 day experiences with this new ROM.

Firstly,if you are interested in trying this out:::
Backup your exisiting WM2003 ROM using the steps explained here.
Now,you can go ahead and download the latest version of WM5 from ronswens site(Version 4.1).
Ronswens described installation steps in great detail here.

Version 4.1 of WM5 for Typhoon is released pretty recently.I tested Version 4.0 and here goes my observations::
1)Pretty few amount of RAM(only 33%==5~6MB) is available when the phone boots. You can use Celetask(long press Home button) to close the unnecessary apps. and refreshing the memory.
2)When I use my phone as Bluetooth modem, sometimes it throws error msgs.We need to retry few times before we can connect.USB modem works fine though!!Bluetooth modem behaves properly at times!!
3)Cool new features added(few important apps. such as CeleTask,WMP10.0,... and the menu is changed too.You need to experience the new feel!!

Finally,I can now boast of using Opera with download manager. That means,I can download files directly to my phone,no more relying on PockeIE.I will discuss more about installing that version of Opera in my next post!!

p.s::From now on,I'm going to blog on apps. running on my WM5 enabled Typhoon.

Opera Mini 2.0 Improved Features (Review)

Opera plays a silent cat's role by releasing a 'pepped-up' version of Opera Mini.I have tried it on my HTC Typhoon and was taken aback on its improved feature set! Some of the changes are::

1)A revised UI(minor change)
2)Better Navigation(Smooth scroll)
3)Image save option(PIE opens up)
4)File Download option(Partial Implementation)
5)Option to Add Different Search Engines in UI
6)Slightly faster Operation(Overall)

The much coveted feature::Download Option was missing for Smartphones to date and Opera Mini tries to fill this void.Hmm,we couldnt' yet see the 'Transfer' option as in Symbian versions of Opera. In this version of Opera Mini, whenever we try to download a file/image,the control is transfered to Pocket IE and the download commences there itself. You should use SmartExplorer to download a wider variety of files (*.cab/.zip/.rm/so on...).Much about that in my next post!!
Thank you Opera for this productive and free release of Opera Mini 2.0!!

Free Idea GPRS Hack (India)

I was testing Idea(Tata) GPRS speeds the other day. They used to charge me 10 paise for 10 KB until my recharge balance was Rs 1.01.After this, they stopped charging me!!Yep,we can use GPRS for free after our balance reaches this golden figure!!The downside being the inability to use it as a modem(browse net on p.c).I have successfully tested this trick with Opera Browser and Agile Messenger.

P.S::This trick is applicable only to windows smartphones.I have tested it on my HTC Typhoon in A.P(hyderabad) with Idea GPRS.Other phones refuse to cash in on this trick;)

Free xetra xbar 3.0

What is the hype about xbar 3.0 all about? When I first used the Symbian series of smartphones(Nokia 6600),I was charmed at the ease of operation it has put in;mainly the copy/paste functionality which is embedded into it's ROM.Well, lets put an end to Nokia's monopoly in the copy/paste area by opting for Xbar 3.0 which hosts a hoard of positives including the much awaited copy/paste in windows smartphones;the only downer being the complexity involved in it's usage(windows smartphones were never considered to be user-friendly)!!
Lay your hands on Xbar 3.0 and start off by keying in the registration code::23074 (it works only if Start-->Settings-->Owner Info.-->Name==Smartphone),Voila!!(Pl buy if you really like this product). Its time to play with this tool now.Press the joystick for 2 seconds and you are greeted with an app which pops as shown in this picture. You find all the apps currently running on the phone.
1)So,whenever you want to copy/paste sth, launch Xbar and press the volume down key(at the left side of HTC Typhoon) which makes sure that the text is selected. Now,press the volume Up key to paste the text. You have just mimicked copy/paste functionality of Symbian phones ;)
2)Now,just press keypad "1" for less than a second and then, all but the highlighted app are closed(killed).Prolonged keypress of "1" will exit all the running apps.

There are so many other features of this tiny app.Do visit the help file on the Xbar app to learn more about its features. Now,enjoy the full smartphone functionality!!

Opera Browser::Free for Life

Yep,you heard it right.Opera provides you with 2 absolutely free browsers for your smartphone :: Opera Mini and Opera Community Preview 7.60.Though Opera Mini works jus fine,we always need the best nah, hence the solution is Opera Browser. It works wonders on ur phone. Some of the salient features being::Multiple Windows & Mobile accelarator. The only downside being its inability to download files for which u need to take the help of PocketIE.All said and done, now we all know that Opera browser comes at a price,so how to overcome this?Well you have 2 options::
1)Download the latest version which gives you 15~30 days trial. Then after that trial period, roll back your phones date by a month!!
2)Download Opera TCP 7.60(Technical Community Preview, search on google for download or place a request such that I will upload it for you!!) and which is free for use till 2005 November.Hence install it and roll back date on your phone to 2005!!Simple huh!!Advantage of Opera TCP 7.60 is that you are provided with Opera Mobile accelarator for free which is otherwise impossible!!

Free SMS to Indian mobiles (GSM & CDMA)

I have tested many a number of websites offering the so called "free sms to any mobile" in India :: The first such website being Krify SMS,it ceased to function at all times from then on.Then came SMS Junction which lacked CDMA support. The site im going to tell about is AtroChatro which is weirdly named for the purpose. This site supports both GSM and CDMA mobiles and the success rate of the messages getting delivered is also high too!!One of my favorite features this site dons is SMS content branched under Romance/Fun/Naughty/....They are all user contributions and they really rock.Have a look at this new kid on the block @ www.atrochatro.com
UPDATE:So,is this site stopping u from sending more than 5 free sms/day per IP??Try using a proxy address,u may now spam ur friends!!Please dont' use this for any unlawful means, thank u!!

Smartphones:::Browser Wars

well,so wats this hype all about??yep, getting da world in ur hands, vying to capture da entire webpages similar to dat of its desktop counterpart.well,so who's won da race so far??
Opera/Pocket IE/ThunderHawk/Opera mini/Minimo/(no netscape)??Nymore exists??
Well, lemme give my experiences::I have tried all of them(hacked into da full versions)!!

N heres' da verdict::Opera 7.60 TP* wins da race(not 8.0 cos its a trial and I enjoy full 7.60 still,will tell u how).

Opera 7.6 TP is released for free untill Nov 2005.(u can use it still by ticking da date back to <2005 Nov and enjoy the solid browser for free!!)
The pros r dat it got built in Opera Web Accelarator(for free) which loads pages in a giffy!!
The cons being::no download capapbility(no proven download capable browser yet),unable to save images.

Opera mini is free though, lots of power packed:: good for viewing text enabled sites(images too).

Pocket IE::: yep, with few tweaks, you can use this pretty useless browser for some niche features like downloads n stuff.(tweak using smartexplorer)

ThunderHawk:::Pretty good for a browser with some creative features like screen zooming n stuff but all in all a hefty price to b paid in the end,so use opera for free!!

Minimo,
the browser of debate these days::yet to succesfully integrate with our smartphones(pocket pc users r lucky),i beta tested it with version 0.013 n it showed google with no difficulties. Its still under development:::it will create history cos its opensource(freeware).

Hope u enjoyed my Browser discussion, keep an eye for updations!!Next to follow::my favorite applications on my favorite phone!!
