The system cannot find specified file. (0x80070002) error, Windows 7

The solution to this problem is to reload/reinstall registry entries for your services. It seems some critical services were turned off, etc, causing a generic backup error.

Students Use Texting Technology to Save Thousands in the Aftermath of the Haitian Earthquake

Students Use Texting Technology to Save Thousands in the Aftermath of the Haitian Earthquake: "In the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti, thousands of volunteers from around the world rushed to the small island nation to lend their support to the relief efforts. Combing the country for survivors, digging men, women and children out of the rubble of buildings, providing medical assistance, food, water and shelter; these men and women worked tirelessly around the clock to find and rescue as many people as possible. At the same time, thousands of miles away, in a tiny basement of the Fletcher School at Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts, four students began to work on a project that could change the face of humanitarian aid as we know it."

Seagate BlackArmor - 500GB *and* USB 3.0

The BlackArmor portable hard drive from Seagate is a nice portable solution with 1/2 Terabyte of storage, but what really sets it apart is its USB 3.0 connection.

What is USB 3.0 you ask? It is the newest USB standard that you'll start seeing in many devices during 2010. It allows you to transfer data up to 3 times faster than the USB 2.o devices you are using now. Imagine the time savings of backing up large files, photos, database, etc. It is also backward compatible so you can use it on 2.0 devices, but you'll lose the gain in speed.

The device retails for $99.99.

Exploring the Brave, New World of Mobile Giving - By Christina Johns : FundRaising Success

Exploring the Brave, New World of Mobile Giving - By Christina Johns : FundRaising Success: "After the earthquake in Haiti, the word “mobile” seemed to take on a life of its own. Like most bright, shiny things, it’s easy to get wrapped up in the success we saw with text-to-donate campaigns for Haiti relief. While bringing the use of mobile devices into the nonprofit world is most certainly a positive step, it still must hold up to the standard critiques given to any new method of communication that an organization decides to test when reaching out to its constituents. Here are a few things to mull over as you add SMS to your nonprofit vocabulary."

Victorinox Launches Swiss Army Flash Drive - Unhackable?

I've always thought the Swiss Army flash drives were way cool. The whole idea of a Swiss Army knife gets most geeks ready to pull out a credit card. Then came the idea of putting a jump drive in the knife and my "geek-o-meter" went off the scale. Well imagine my reaction when I learned today that the Victorinox company, makers of the Swiss Army knife, have released a new version called The Victorinox Secure Pro.

This device isn't just a flash drive in a knife like the older models were. This one has some security features that has prompted the company to offer a prize of £ 100,000 to anyone who can hack it.

The device features AES256 encryption as well as a fingerprint reader and, get this, a thermal and oxygen sensor that can tell whether the finger is still attached to its owner or not.The device will sell for £100 for an 8GB model and £245 for a 32GB model. Amazing technology and the price isn't too bad.

The only drawback for me is that the software to run it is Windows only currently.

Lighthouseplz Keeps Us in Contact With Our Patients

One of the great things about technology is is the ability to be more efficient while increasing what you do. There are many ways in dentistry to do this. One of the best things I've seen for the administrative staff is to use Lighthouseplz.

Lighthouse keeps us in constant contact with our patient base. It interfaces with our practice operating system, Eaglesoft and frees the admin team to concentrate on other aspects of their responsibilities. We rarely do confirming phone calls anymore. Since we have patient e-mail addresses and mobile phone numbers in the Eaglesoft database it's easy. Lighthouse interfaces remotely with our database and sends e-mail and mobile phone messages to confirm appointments.

That alone is pretty cool, but Lighthouse also works the process in reverse as well. By interfacing with Eaglesoft, when a patient electronically confirms, Lighthouse goes into Eaglesoft and marks their appointment as confirmed in the software. The admin team doesn't have to do anything! The appointments simply show up in the schedule as "confirmed".

Lighthouse also sends out patient satisfaction surveys, newsletters, and much more. For the full story, check out their website. You'll be glad you did.

AR Drone - Easy Flying & Wicked Easy Controls

Behold the AR Drone. This four propeller helicopter can fly, hover, and even send images from its nose mounted camera. The best part? You can control it from your iPod Touch or iPhone. The camera sends views back to your controlling device as well as providing you with a HUD (Heads Up Display). No word on cost yet, but it should be available in 2010. If you're interested in purchasing, you can monitor the website. Read on for all the details.

Dear publishers & developers,

In January 2010, we unveiled the Parrot AR.DRONE, the first ever flying Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with Augmented Reality.

A DRONE HELICOPTER EVEN A CHILD CAN PILOT!

For the first time an affordable helicopter will come with stabilized fly model, making it so easy to pilot even a child can control it.

Thanks to its Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), Digital Signal Processor (DSP), Inertial measurement unit (IMU) and sensors, the Parrot AR.DRONE turns complex fly patterns into an easy-to-pilot system.

Children will pilot AR.DRONE instinctively, using the iPhone, without any learning curve. This allows for an incredible fly experience and acrobatics.

A GAME CHANGER FOR THE WAY VIDEO GAMES ARE PLAYED INDOOR & OUTDOOR

While the iPhone will display the HUD, controls, animations and sounds, the Parrot AR.DRONE will fly around you. Stop moving your iPhone and the AR.DRONE will stay put, steady, balancing its engines to fly as well as a hummingbird.

The AR.DRONE can play solo games with Augmented Reality, relying on 2D or 3D gametags in the real world to create virtual tracks or display virtual enemies.

Even better, a multiplayer demo experience is built-in: the "Drone War" allowing 2 AR.DRONE to compete for air supremacy, with virtual lasers and missiles!

AN OPPORTUNITY FOR VIDEO GAMES PUBLISHERS & DEVELOPERS

By registering on Ardrone.org, you will be able to download the SDK, buy a AR.DRONE flying kit and start developing great and innovative video games.

Thanks to the Open Game API we provide, your projects will change the way video games are played, both indoor and outdoor.

CFP: Canadian Print Culture (Universities Art Association of Canada 2010 Conference )

CFP: Canadian Print Culture (Universities Art Association of Canada 2010 Conference )
University of Guelph, Ontario
October 14-16, 2010

CANADIAN PRINT CULTURE

An interest in print culture as a primary field of art historical inquiry has, in recent years, been gaining significant ground. The relationship between artists, the graphic arts and the publishing industry at the turn of the twentieth century, the impact of little magazines and mass-circulation periodicals on the development of modernism, and the extensive use of print media by artists active in the post-war period are among the issues that are being seen increasingly as crucial to a full understanding of the practice and reception of art. This panel proposes to investigate the history of print culture in Canada and aims to provide an assessment of the state of research into print culture within Canadian art history. We welcome papers that address any aspect of the role that print – in all its myriad forms – has played in the history of the visual arts in Canada.

300-word proposals should reach session chairs no later than May 3, 2010.

Call For Participation : ALA Annual at D.C. - What is Your Library Doing about Emerging Technologies?

Call For Participation : ALA Annual at D.C. - What is Your Library Doing about Emerging Technologies?

Submission link:
http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=dDktR2k2OUpGcGl3b1FkY3RSYjc1RlE6MA
Submission deadline: April, 1, 2010

Do you directly work with emerging technologies at your library? Did you play a role in creating a librarian position for emerging technologies? Do you supervise a librarian who work with emerging technologies or have expertise in emerging technologies yourself? You don't have to hold the job title of "Emerging Technologies Librarian" to participate. If you answer yes to any of these questions, then we want to hear from you.

Despite the popularity of the term, there is no clear definition or shared understanding about what "emerging technologies" mean to libraries and librarians. Almost all libraries strive to stay current with quickly changing technologies. But not all libraries have established a formal method and procedure of supporting, evaluating, implementing, and adopting emerging technologies.

ALA LITA Emerging Technologies Interests Group (ETIG) is seeking participants to a panel discussion - "What are your libraries doing about emerging technologies" at ALA Annual 2010 at Washington D.C. We are particularly interested in identifying librarians, library administrators, and technology experts who can contribute to the following (but not limited) topics:
* What do we mean when we say "emerging technologies"?
* What motivates libraries and administrators to create a new position for "emerging technologies"?
* What are the daily tasks performed or projects achieved by (emerging) technology librarians at your libraries?
* What are the challenges for emerging technologies for libraries? (From both a manager's, a librarian's, or a technologist's perspective)
* How do you evaluate, implement and adopt emerging technologies?
* What should libraries be doing about emerging technologies?
* Other thoughts about libraries and emerging technologies

If you are interested, please submit your proposal by filling out this
form: http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=dDktR2k2OUpGcGl3b1FkY3RSYjc1RlE6MA

If you have any questions, please contact Bohyun Kim (bohyun.kim@fiu.edu), ETIG member, or Jacquelyn Erdman (ERDMANJ@ecu.edu), ETIG vice Chair.

CALL FOR PAPERS: SPECIAL ISSUE OF THE JOURNAL OF MEDIA LITERACY EDUCATION

CALL FOR PAPERS: SPECIAL ISSUE OF THE JOURNAL OF MEDIA LITERACY EDUCATION

The Journal of Media Literacy Education invites submissions for a special theme issue exploring the relationship between media literacy and digital media and learning. Children and young people are growing up with new forms of media and communication technology that are unfamiliar to many parents and teachers. Scholars are making significant efforts to document
the way young people play and socialize online. New norms of online participation are emerging as part of child and adolescent socialization. However, some scholars with interests in digital media and learning position their work at a distance from the practice of media literacy education, privileging the study of user behavior, social connectivity and participation and dismissing practices associated with message interpretation, critical analysis and inquiry, and communication skill development. In this issue, we are interested in exploring both the areas
of disjuncture and areas of overlap, aiming to conceptualize new ideas that may fuel the development of both fields.

You are invited to submit manuscripts that explore the topic of digital media and learning in ways that connect with the practice and pedagogy of media literacy education. Your work may be framed around scholarship and practice in education, media studies, cultural studies, or other fields. Some issues we hope the manuscripts may consider: How do media literacy’s
structured, formal and critical practices of reading texts/contexts/cultures map onto new forms of participation and engagement in social media environments? How do those who explore digital media and learning conceptualize the various protectionist-empowerment positions?
How does learning about young peoples’ out-of-school literacy practices with digital media support the development of in-school programs? Why are aspects of mass media and popular culture generally absent from discussion about digital media and learning? How are new online tools (including those for remix, screen capture, commenting, and collaborative writing)
shifting the role of media production practices both in and out of the classroom? Is the focus on digital “tool competence” contributing to another kind of “technicist trap?” How does scholarship in digital media and learning address issues of representation and cultural difference? Is
digital citizenship a new set of life skills or a form of moral education which frames media and technology use in terms of middle-class values and cultural norms? How are issues of political economy get learned and taught in relation to social media tools like YouTube and Facebook? How do messages about media literacy and about the value of digital media and learning resonate with journalists, policymakers, school leaders, teacher, parents and children and young people themselves?

Contributors are invited to make submissions at any time on the JMLE website at http://www.jmle.org/ Final date for all volume 2 issue 2 submissions is June 1, 2010. You may contact the editors with any questions at editor@jmle.org

Zomm - Never Misplace your Mobile Phone Again

Every once in a while I stumble across a product that is a "slap your forehead" kind of thing because it's so simple and solves a common problem and I wonder "why didn't I think of that?"

The Zomm is that kind of product. In February I was at the Chicago Midwinter Dental Meeting and I was on my way to an event hosted by Danaher on the 99th floor of the Sears Tower. The building is considered a national landmark, and as such, you are screened before entering. It's similar to what you go through in airports. As I stepped up, I reached for my Palm Pre mobile phone only to realize it wasn't in my pocket. I panicked, as my entire life was in that phone. I had just gotten out of cab, was it rolling around on the floor bouncing all over Chicago? Fortunately when I got back to my room that night, it was laying on the bed where I had left it. I was relieved, to say the least.

Now there's Zomm. It's brilliant in its simplicity. The idea was conceived by a mom who kept hearing friends and her kids complaining about losing their phones. It connects to your phone via Bluetooth and is attached to your keychain. It sounds an alarm if you get more than a few yards away from your phone. It also provides call notification with full mobile speakerphone functionality, provides a panic button and calls emergency assistance from anywhere in the world with just one press of a button.

The device is ingenious and will be available in summer 2010. You can even preorder them for $79.99 from the Zomm website. Very cool!!!

The 2010 ICA/SUV Conference Archival Traditions and Practice. Are Archivists Historians?" will be hosted by Institute for the History of Charles University and Archive of Charles University and the Masaryk Institute and Archive of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.

Archivists have a close connection with history, but there are very different concepts about
the nature of this relationship. The term ‘to archive‘ encompasses a number of functions and
activities carried out by an archivist in the course of their professional duties, including
acquisition, appraisal, selection, arrangement, cataloguing and preservation, to enable future
generations of historians and other researchers to work with them. Those functions require
archivists to interpret the records and collections in their care, as does aspects of access to the
collections, incuding the production of exhibitions, presentations and publications. How do
archivists ensure objectivitiy and impartiality and is this possible? Do archivists create history
in the course of their professional duties through decision-making during acquisition,
selection and interpretation? How also do archivists know what might be of interest for
historians in the future? Should they consult their users about that? Or should they, as a part
of their professional duties, follow actual research and methodological discussions in history
to react to changing preferences and aspects of historical research?

More Sprint WiMax Cities are on the Horizon

The CTIA wireless trade show is currently in progress and that means there will be plenty of announcements from wireless carriers and phone manufacturers.

One of the big announcements today was from my hometown company, Sprint. They've been rolling out WiMax to limited markets, but today announced that the service will be coming to other cities soon. The WiMax service is currently available in 27 cities, including Baltimore, Seattle, Las Vegas and Philadelphia. In the not too distant future it will be available in Boston, Denver, Kansas City, Houston, Minneapolis, New York, San Francisco and Washington, D.C

Needless to say the Kansas City rollout is high on my list of geek projects for the year. Why am I excited about WiMax? It's the
up-to-12 megabit/second download speeds and the fact that Sprint has stated the plans will have unlimited data. That's paradise for someone like me!

Make Your Computer Last Longer

Make Your Computer Last Longer
The average computer lasts anywhere from two-five years. Eventually, your computer will tear up beyond repair or become so out-of-date that you can no longer use the latest software or accessories along with it, and you'll have to begin the dreaded, inevitable search for a replacement. Buying a new computer is a hassle if you don't know exactly what you're looking for and you aren't familiar with what's current. And of course, with today's economy and job market, you're probably cutting corners whenever possible. New computers can be expensive. Here are a few tips on how you can make your current computer last longer.

If your computer is older and it's running well, there's no need to get rid of it just yet. If you're using it for simple tasks such as word processing, surfing the internet, or manging pictures, age shouldn't be much of a factor. Routine maintenance will keep your computer running smoothly, save you money, and maybe even extend the life of your PC.

The temperature can have a big impact on your computer and cause a lot of damage. Computers generate a lot of heat and at one time had to be stored in climate-controlled rooms. You don't need to keep your living room or home office at a set temperature, but you do want to keep your PC from overheating. Make sure it's not left in direct sun too long and make sure it's properly ventilated.

You'll also want to keep your computer clean. Extra dust on or around your PC can trap heat and making your cooling fan work even harder. This can lead to lots of wear and tear, and eventually to your fan giving out all together. Be careful where you place the computer. Putting the machine on the floor can lead to lots of dirt and dust build-up. Also avoid any rooms with heavy dust build-up. Of course, no matter how careful you are, your computer is going to accumulate some dust, so you might want to blow it out with compressed air every so often.

Laptops are becoming extremely popular and generally don't last as long as desktops. You may leave your laptop plugged in all the time, but leaving it plugged in is bad for your battery. Apple even recommends users don't keep their laptops constantly plugged in and use the battery at times. A typical battery lasts 300-500 charge cycles, but if you find your battery struggling to stay charged, replacing it is a good idea and an inexpensive way to prevent yourself from having to buy a whole new computer.

Restarting your computer is another way to keep things flowing. Most people reboot when they hit trouble, hoping for a fresh start when the computer comes back on and this is actually a good idea. However, many people also leave their computer running 24/7. There's no set time as to how often you should reboot, but rebooting can give your computer a fresh start, speed things up, and serves as a small refresher to your PC.

Nintendo Announces 3DS Portable Game System

Some of the greatest innovation comes from the world of gaming. I got my first taste of technology with arcade games and the original Atari. A lot of the innovation of the early tech days and the proof of Moore's Law were greatly because of the constant improvement that game designers kept churning out. Unfortunately, I haven't played much in the last 15 years, but I still remember...

Today Nintendo announced the next big thing for handheld gaming. Since it was launched in 2004, the Mario folks have been making and selling millions of their DS portable gaming system. While at one time it was thought Sony's PSP would conquer this market, the DS became the device that it seemed every kid had.

Now comes the next generation the 3DS which promises a 3D gaming experience with no glasses. Supposedly using something referred to as "naked eye 3D using a parallax barrier technique developed by Sharp Electronics". From what I can glean, this technology is already being used in some types of mobile phones in Japan.

The press release was released on the company's Japanese website and I found what was stated to be a translation. It seems to contain good info, but I cannot confirm it is indeed from Nintendo:

Nintendo Co., Ltd.(Minami-ward of Kyoto-city, President Satoru Iwata) will launch “N intendo 3D S”(temp) during the fiscal year ending March 2011, on which games can be enjoyed with 3D effects without the need for any special glasses.
“Nintendo 3DS”(temp) is going to be the new portable game machine to succeed “Nintendo DS series”, whose cumulative consolidated sales from Nintendo amounted to 125million units as of the end of December 2009, and will include backward compatibility so that the software for Nintendo DS series, including the ones for Nintendo DSi, can also be enjoyed.
We are planning to announce additional details at E3 show, which is scheduled to be held from June 15, 2010 at Los Angeles in the U.S.

JBL Pro releases CBT system design software

At Prolight & Sound 2010, JBL Professional is introducing its Constant Beamwidth Technology (CBT) Calculator 1.00 software. The CBT Calculator shows the vertical coverage of JBL CBT line array column loudspeakers by means of an on-screen, cross-sectional sound level coverage display at user-selectable frequencies.

The CBT Calculator allows the use of either one or two JBL Professional CBT loudspeakers, while virtually adjusting their various settings for vertical coverage (narrow or broad) and voicing (speech or music/flat) in a space with up to four independent listening planes. The software also shows frequency response for up to six listener locations as well as an SPL summary of each location over user-defined frequency bands.

With this new software, system designers will be able to determine the best CBT model, the proper vertical coverage and voicing settings, mounting height and down angle, enabling accurate design of the CBT column line array speakers into virtually any application.

“We developed the CBT Series to bring a new level of pattern control and sonic fidelity to the passive line array column product category,” said Rick Kamlet, Senior Director, Commercial Installed Sound, JBL Professional. “Now, with the CBT Calculator 1.00 software, systems integrators have even more tools at their disposal to ensure precision and superior sound when installing CBT Series loudspeakers.”

The CBT Calculator is available and free to download at: www.JBLPro.com/CBTCalculator.

JBL’s CBT Series line array column loudspeakers are the first speakers to incorporate JBL’s newly-introduced and patented Constant Beamwidth Technology™. This technology uses passive beam-forming components to--for the first time ever--deliver constant directivity coverage from a non-powered column, resulting in consistent frequency response at every listener location. CBT introduces a number of technological firsts, including the ability to switch the vertical coverage pattern of a non-powered speaker with a simple switch. The CBT 70J provides non-symmetrical vertical coverage, sending more sound toward the far area of the room than to the near area, resulting in more consistent sound levels within the room from front to back. Models range from an ultra-compact column all the up to a large 2-way, high-fidelity 1,000-Watt full-range model, all at a fraction of the cost of powered digitally-steered columns.

This full-featured product leverages the modular nature of JBL DrivePack technology, and can be easily installed as an upgrade to all DP Series fullsize, midsize and compact line array elements and subwoofers along with all of the premium powered system models in JBL’s Venue Performance Series.

The HiQnet™-compatible DPDA input module, remotely controlled with Harman’s System Architect software, can function as an audio and networking technology upgrade to enhance the performance of any DrivePack-equipped speaker system, regardless of model or application. BSS Omnidrive HD signal processing with F.I.R.filters and LevelMAX™ multi-stage limiting makes the advantages of BSS’ legendary signal processing algorithms available to JBL powered speaker system owners. In addition, other key features include both XLR and rugged Ethercon connectors plus a native Ethernet switch for simplified cabling and improved connectivity, AES/EBU digital audio for cleaner, clearer audio performance without the need for external converter products, and a unique loudspeaker box and array I.D. mechanism that makes the setup of complex touring systems go more smoothly.

“The DPDA module appears that it will finally give self-powered system users the missing link to a fully digital AES3 signal flow, all the way from the digital mixer to the powered speaker arrays,” observed Jim Risgin, Vice President, Onstage Audio. “No longer does the user have to rely on a network transport protocol to get digital audio to the powered speaker. Combine this with its extensive feature set: redundant signal path, single-cable interconnect, BSS Processing as well as your choice of mechanical or software addressing, and JBL’s new DPDA module gives the system engineer both flexibility and ease of everyday use. Gone are the days that required a computer and lots of time just to reconfigure arrays in a networked system every time it left the shop. I believe that the ease of use and leading-edge DSP performance in a DPDA-equipped system will deliver everything a user needs.”

In addition to the availability of retrofit DPDA input modules for upgrading existing JBL DrivePack-equipped speaker system inventories worldwide, JBL will be incorporating the DPDA module into all powered speaker models in the VERTEC® DP Series and Venue Performance Series product lines.

Soundcraft v3.0 software adds even more power to Si Series

Soundcraft is introducing its new V3.0 software for its Si Series consoles, offering increased DSP channels, I/O patching and improved layering of the control surface faders.

Not only does the new upgrade support I/O patching of inputs and outputs, but more DSP channels have been realised increasing the mix capacity of the Soundcraft Si1 from 48 to 72, and the Soundcraft Si2 from 64 to 80. These mix channels come from the pool of I/O formed by the local inputs, FX Returns and the option card slot.

The patching facility provides a simple way to freely route not only inputs from physical connectors to DSP channels, but also to assign the channel direct outputs and buses as desired to the MADI outputs (for example a second Si Series console to create a FOH and Monitor pair) or to a MADI-based recording system.

The unique ‘Auto Complete’ feature allows ‘one-touch’ patching of multiple I/O points to channels or buses to save valuable time and avoid mistakes when requiring to re-patch lots of inputs or outputs for example, when switching all input sources to the MADI card for a virtual sound check.

The optional MADI card can also be used to integrate any Si Series console with a Soundcraft Vi Series console, connecting directly into a Vi Series stagebox so the two consoles can share stage inputs.

Further increasing the power of the Soundcraft Si1 are the optional expansion cards; these are available as either 16 additional mic inputs or eight mic inputs and eight line outputs. Needless to say, these additional inputs and outputs contribute to the available pool of I/O for mixing.

To complement the patching and DSP increase, fader layers have been updated to improve the workflow and allow full ‘multi-user operation’ on an Si3 as both the left and right sides of the console can now access the same channels at the same time.

dbx® introduces Media Engine for SC Digital Matrix Processors

dbx® Professional Products, a Harman International Company (NYSE-HAR), today introduced the Media Engine for its SC Digital Matrix Processors. As a factory option, the Media Engine brings cost-effective, flash-based, multi-channel playback of stored media to the SC 32 and SC 64.

The SC Media Engine comprises a DSP card and 1GB of flash storage. This allows storage of media files on the SC device itself for subsequent routing and playback. The Media Engine facilitates simultaneous playback of up to eight channels of stored media and a total storage time of around two hours. By integrating the media playback into the SC and leveraging the sharing of the SC chassis and components, the functionality of an external playback device can be obtained more easily and at a fraction of the cost. This allows contractors to add substantial functionality and value to a system without significant incremental equipment and programming cost.

Media playback can be triggered from dbx ZC Controllers, Control Inputs, HiQnet System Architect™ Custom Control Panels and third party control systems. It can also be scheduled through the HiQnet System Architect Scheduler function, either from a schedule running on a control PC or a schedule running on an SC device itself.

The ability to run scheduled preset recalls and media playback on an SC device means that, once configured, the control PC can be taken away, leaving the SC to make scheduled system changes and play back stored media at pre-determined times. This makes it the perfect device for simplification of audio systems through pre-engineered automation.

The SC 32 and SC 64 Digital Matrix Processors feature intuitive Wizard-driven system configuration using HiQnet System Architect. Unprecedented DSP power and routing flexibility make them the ideal foundation for even the most demanding systems. The SC 32 and SC 64 host a total of 32 and 64 analog I/O respectively, configurable in banks of eight.

The devices feature dedicated DSP for common processing functions as well as insert positions for specialized processing and popular audio tools including dbx Advanced Feedback Suppression™ (AFS™), Automatic Gain Control (AGC), dynamics, Sub-Harmonic Synthesizer, parametric equalizer (PEQ), Ambient Noise Compensation (ANC) and AutoWarmth®.

Harman HiQnet™ is the world's first connectivity and control protocol that integrates all product categories in the signal chain for professional audio systems of all types, size, and applications. Harman HiQnet no longer requires the user to manage multiple disparate operating systems or be responsible for programming individual signal processors, speaker controllers, wireless microphone systems, and mixing consoles. HiQnet was developed by engineers from across the Harman Pro Group and is coordinated by the System Development and Integration Group (SDIG), a team of dedicated systems specialists based in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Eaglesoft 16.0 Beta Test

As I usually do, I'm beta testing the next version of Eaglesoft. This release promised some updates to the front desk that should be welcome to most users.

I did the install of the new software Monday evening and while it was time consuming, every workstation updated without a problem. I noticed this version taking a bit longer to install, but that's the way it goes frequently when more than just cosmetic changes are being made.

One recommendation I can make to anyone installing a program on multiple computers on a network. Rather than going from machine to machine with a CD, copy the CD to your server or a speedy workstation and then do the installation across the network. This allows you to have several computers updating at the same time. It's also handy in case you cant' find your original installation CD. You can always go back to the copy on the server and install from that just as if you had the CD.

Technology Fits and the NCAA

Every once in a while I get what I call a "technology fit". These are moments when even I'm overwhelmed by the amazing amount of technology I'm surrounded by and how easy it can make certain aspects of my life.

This weekend as March madness went into full bloom, I was delighted and sometimes blown away by how much technology has affected the NCAA Tournament.

I'm not just talking about text messaging of scores... although I was getting those. No, I'm talking about things we really take for granted but have changed how we receive and view information.

I watched several games and, thanks to my DVR, I was able to pause, rewind, and slow-motion replay whenever I felt the situation demanded it. I could have even recorded the games, though i chose not to.

Keeping track of the other games being played was easy. My iPod Touch was running the NCAA app and thanks to my wireless network, I could check stats and scores from other games without even getting up or changing the channel. The app also has a full bracket view so I could see how games were affecting the overall "bracketology"

A couple of times I had to run some errands, but no worries. The Tahoe Hybrid has XM Radio and that meant that I could listen to any game I wanted to. Sirius/XM also puts the score right there on the radio screen so I could check scores at stop lights.

Oh, and then there was the ability to Tweet about the games with friends all over the country/world by using the Twee on my Palm Pre and Twittelator on my iPod Touch.

The weekend was awesome. It was a great merger of the sports nut and geek in me. The really stunning thing was that it wasn't until Sunday night that I really began to consider how much my viewing and tracking experience has changed.

Zipcharge Quick Charger

As someone who spends a fair amount of time on the road, I'm always on the hunt for things that can make road warrior life easier/less stressful.

I was really excited when I came across the Zipcharge. The idea is pretty cool. The device comes with tips that will charge almost any gadget you might have. Cool, you say, but there are lots of charger products that do that... and you're right. But the Zipcharge takes this to a whole different level.

Here's just a little snippet from the website:

Why we invented it?
At Freeplay we travel a lot so need every portable device imaginable to keep us in touch or to entertain .......... all of which seem to run out of batteries at the most inconvenient times and in the most inconvenient places.

We decided that we couldn’t monkey around with this problem ...... we needed something that could store enough power to fully charge our mobile phones and iPods in the time it took us to have a coffee. The quest for the 10 minute ZipCharge began......

How it works?
Inside the ZipCharge is the very latest battery technology. It’s all clever nano physics stuff that you need a very big forehead to understand. We have quite a few people in our company like that.

Our state of the art battery chemistry and control electronics charge 4 times faster than a lithium-ion battery so you can get mobile again in a flash!

Product Features

Typical Performance
(Guideline only, performance will vary according to device)

Charging the ZipCharge for 10 minutes will store enough power to enable the following:

Apple to Prepare 12-Core Mac Pros and 27-inch LED Cinema Displays

Apple Dodeca-core Mac ProApple is hard at work putting the "icing on the cake" for a pair of new products that Apple says are targeted at their professional customers. The two devices in question are a larger version of Apple's LED Cinema Display as well as a major upgrade to the Mac Pro workstations according to AppleInsider.

The first product on the list is Apple's Cupertino-based second LED-backlit Cinema Display. The new version will upgrade the previous 24-inch model to a 27-inch model. The 27-inch model has been rumored to have been sitting in the labs at Apple waiting for the displays to arrive. The new model will have a 27-inch diagonal frame which will support a 2560x1440 native resolution.

Since the 27-inch iMacs were so successful, Apple now believes that they can market the displays at a much more affordable price. Apple has also said that they fixed the problems that plagued the same size panels ultimately slowing the momentum of the larger iMac offerings back when they released in October 2009.

But the increased monitors are not the only thing Apple is coming up with. The company is also producing their boldest update to the Mac Pro they have ever done. Details about the update are still kind of scarce but anybody familiar with the matter were very clear in stating that Mac maker's plans call for a dodeca-core model which supports a pair of Intel's latest Westmere-bashed hexacore chips totaling out at 12 cores.

Another rumor floating around is that Apple will more than likely stay with its existing Xeon strategy by putting in a pair of not-so-cheap Xeon 5600 Series "Gulftown" chips into a dodeca-core Mac Pro. Apple will also be offering a single processor model with only 6 cores with a price similar to the $2,500 quad-core model.

Both the 27-inch monitor and the 5600 Series should be available by June with the 5600 Series coming in 2.66, 2.8, 2.93 and 3.33GHz configurations with a price ranging anywhere from $996 to $1663 in lots of 1000. The new 32 nanometer chips have 12MB of L3 cache as well as 6 cores with 12 threads for each CPU.

Whichever rout you go, either the single or the double Xeon model, be prepared to shell out a nice chunk of change. However, by doing so you will definitely be rewarded in the end. No official release date has been set but we should see these products sometime this June.
