Starbucks Announces Release of "Official" Android App

NewImage.png
The age of a "cashless society" is upon us.  Of course, maybe it's just a "walletless society", but nonetheless there seems to be fewer and fewer reasons to actually carry cash or a checkbook these days.
I remember being in the Salt Lake City airport shortly after the 2000 Olympics and i saw the vending machines all had Ethernet connections & you could swipe a credit card in them.  Obviously this was a necessity when you got tons of travelers coming through that don't have US Currency (possibly not even speaking English) and still want a Coke.  Being able to swipe & go was a tremendous service to offer these visiting travelers, not to mention a (most likely) cash cow for the vending machine companies.  Heck, I bought a Coke from one of the machines just because I wanted to say I'd done it.  It's not always inexpensive being a traveling geek!
Anyway, now with credit & debit cards a lot of folks really aren't carrying much cash these days.  I personally can't remember the last time I carried a check book either.  Well, this is all taking an even more techie turn as smart phones get into the fray of this as well.  As an example, let's take a look at my favorite coffee company, Starbucks.  One of the neat marketing things Starbucks does is the concept of your "own" coffee card.  Someone can give you one or you can get one for yourself.  It's  a gift card that can then be registered to a certain user (you) and then reloaded with cash whenever the balance gets low.  By having a card tied to you by registering it through the Starbucks website, the owner's coffee habits can be tracked and Starbucks assigns "points" for purchases.  It's a great way for the company to ensure loyalty and the consumer gets some perks as well.
In January, the company released an App through the Apple App Store that allowed the consumer to put in their Starbucks Card number and then use the app to charge/pay for the purchases... even if the buyer didn't have their card with them.  This made Starbucks truly cashless.  It also meant that more and more  people began locking themselves into a card since they could reload it at their leisure and didn't have to worry about having cash or their card with them.
The bummer part of the deal came when no Android App showed up.  Trust me when I say, "Geeks drink coffee."  i know of what I speak.  Geeks also use phones other than those made by Apple.   So, anyway today Starbucks announced that they have an Android App that mimics what iPhone users have had for 6 months now.
However, you don't have to use this new app if you don't want to.  Because there was a need and no solution by Starbucks, an app called My Coffee Card.  This amazing and FREE app allows you to charge your purchases by creating an onscreen barcode that can be scanned by the cash register.  It also tracks your spending and stores your receipts.  This receipt/account function is so fast that I can pay for my coffee using the app, check my balance, and have the updated/current balance on the screen before my coffee is in my hand.  You can also use it to reload your card using a secure connection where you simply punch in your credit card number and then tell it how much you want to put on the card.  Heck, it even has a Starbucks locator for those of us who travel.
I've been using My Coffee Card since the early part of 2011 and I can't say enough good things about it.  In fact, it does such a great job, I'm not quite sure why Starbucks bothered to bring out an app after 6 months of not having one.
Now just to be fair, I did download the "official" Starbucks app today and I'm going to give it a try, but honestly it's going to have to really sweep me off my feet to get me to give up my beloved My Coffee Card.

Kno Textbook App for iPad

Kno logo.png
While many of us love to read books on Kindles, Nooks, and tablet devices, we've been  more or less forced to read what the sellers in our respective online stores will sell us.  Not that I'm complaining, but what I mean by that comment is that if I have a Kindle, I can only read what Amazon has in the Kindle store, etc.
Now in most instances, this is great.  If you read for pleasure or personal growth, the device stores has more titles than you could consume in a lifetime.
Oh, and I *love* being able to read a book on my Kindle, my Xoom, and/or my iPad.  It's a great way to read and I love being able to highlight, make notes, dog ear pages, and all the other fun stuff you can do.
The only real drawback?  You can't read textbooks.  That can be a pain to those of us who are professionals and continue to use textbooks as reference materials.
Well, that is now changing thanks to Kno.  The concept is a nice one.  Kno is an app for the iPad and also an online store with over 70,000 (yes... 70,000) textbooks.  Just download and install the app from the Apple App Store, go to the store, buy your textbook, and start reading.
While I haven't had a chance to review the store... yet, you can bet I will be doing so in the near future.  I'm already lightening my load by letting Lexicomp put 15 drug and medical reference textbooks on my Xoom and iPad. Soon, I may also be carrying a huge reference library of my favorite textbooks courtesy of Kno. Check them out and then post a comment!

Find Your Luggage the Easy Way

Easy2Pick.jpg
As someone who spends a good deal of time on the road, I've got more "bad" travel stories than I care to even think about.  And even if you aren't one of the lucky souls who knows the best eateries at most of the airports, you probably want to take as much stress off your travel as possible.
To that end, take a look at the Wireless Luggage Finder by Easy-2-Pick.  The concept is beauty in its simplicity.  The device consists of 2 parts.  A wireless transmitter that looks like a luggage tag & is attached to your suitcase.  A wireless receiver that looks similar to your car remote.  Simply place the "tag" on your luggage and turn it on.  Once you arrive at your destination luggage carousel, turn your key fob on.  When your suitcase pops into view on the baggage carousel, the key fob will begin to beep, notifying you that your luggage is on the belt.
My partner Kelly gave me one of these devices for Christmas and it's been a nice addition to my travels.  With so many bags looking the same these days, it's nice to be able to know "yes, that's my bag".

Working & the NFL Playoffs - Can They Coexist?

Today I'll be spending the day reviewing and finalizing my 5 (that's right 5) lectures that I'll be giving at the Yankee Dental Congress this week.  Of course the problem with that is that the NFL Playofs are today too.  What's a sports fan to do?

Well, fortunately for me, I have a bit of tech to help me along.

While I'll be working away on my MacBook Pro, I'll also be using an extra 19" monitor that allows me to have 2 screens.   Studies have shown that people who use 2 screens are a minimum of 20% more efficient.  I'll gladly attest to that.  When I'm on the road and forced to use just the screen on my Mac, it feels like I'm typing with only one hand or something.

Add to that the fact that I have a Windows machine in my home office that is also set up with 2 monitors.  One of them is an Exorvision 17" with a cable TV connection.  That allows me to have the games up (and muted unfortunately), but i can, with the push of a remote, switch it back to computer if need be to do some research.  Oh, and since that monitor will have a browser open, I'll also have the ESPN live game feed open so if the TV is off, game progress can still be followed.  Even with the monitor in TV mode, the other monitor will have Tweetdeck up to keep me updated of the info coming in from my Twitter buddies and Facebook friends.

It won't be like sitting  on a comfy couch and watching the game in surround sound, but it's far better than the alternative!

LightKeeper Pro - Decking the Halls Just Got a Whole Lot Easier

"One goes out, they ALL go out!!!" That's a common stressful battle cry during the holidays right? I mean, do you like trying to figure out which one of the hundreds of bulbs in the string is the culprit? No I didn't think so.

So... if you hate it so much, why don't you do something about it? Behold the LightKeeper Pro. This affordable little gadget allows you to quickly and easily locate burned out bulbs in a series string of lights. How you asked? Read on!

Fixes most light sets in seconds using the Quick Fix Trigger

Most miniature Holiday Light set failures occur when an individual bulb “shunt” fails to energize. These shunts are energized when a filament burns out. This causes a section of lights, usually 35 or 50, to go out instead of just one light bulb. This is because miniature light sets are wired in “series” and electricity must flow through each bulb, to the next, for them to light. The LightKeeper Pro Quick Fix Trigger sends a shaped, electrical pulse through the defective bulb, clearing the shunt. This allows it to operate properly. The current can then flow through the light set completing the circuit and illuminating the other bulbs.

The Patented LightKeeper Pro is the first product to FIX defects in a light set with the squeeze of a trigger.

This nifty little device is available for under $20! For a list of retailers and more info on the product, head on over to the company website.

Elecom Headphones for iPod Shuffle - Who Needs Bluetooth?

Elecom headphones.jpeg
Now don't get me wrong.  I mean I love Bluetooth.  I have it in my truck as well as having a headset, headphones, and a presentation mouse all using the Bluetooth standard.  The wireless standard makes my life easier and cuts down on lots of wires... what's not to love?
And yet, there are those times when less can be more, or at least a steady equivalent, and this is one of those times.  It seems the smart people at Elecom came up with the very bright idea of making the latest iPod Shuffle totally portable and wireless.  Now I know the Shuffle is portable.  Heck the dang thing is about the size of a box of matches... maybe smaller, but the wired earbuds can be a bit of a pain when dealing with any MP3 player; even one as tiny as the new Shuffle.
Now if you don't want wires, you can certainly find some very good Bluetooth headsets like this one that I happen to own. But if you'd rather have a regular "wired" type headset without the wires, Elecom has your solution.  The idea is beautiful in its simplicity.  There is a headphone plug on the headphones and the Shuffle simply slides onto  it and is held in place directly on the side of the headphones.  The result is a totally portable wireless headphone system.  Oh, and it's only $50 which isn't rock bottom cheap, but it isn't breaking the bank either.
I haven't had a chance to evaluate these so I have no idea what the sound quality is, but it's a great concept/idea as far as better mousetraps go.

The Cloud.

Now you can install a Google Chrome extension that eve searches Evernote when you search via Chrome. Slick!

Working Smarter with AnteriorRest - Now Undergoing Clinical Testing in Our Office

For those of you who work in dentistry, this stat will come as no surprise, to those of you outside the field you may be shocked to learn that over 60% of dentists who become disabled do so due to neck and back issues.  The "dental posture" that doctors are in several hours a day, just isn't natural.  we sit in an upright position with no support and, in many cases, have to hold very still while we work.  This just isn't the way the human body is designed to work and we pay for it with our spines.  I personally know several doctors who either suffer from chronic spinal issues or have had to leave practice due to these same issues.

Now a company is trying to change that aspect of dental practice.  The company is ProHealth Equipment and the product is called AnterioRest. The concept is a fairly simple one.  The device gives the operator something to lean against while they work which means the back and neck muscles can relax more while giving the operator the positioning they require to perform treatment.

On the Dental Entertainment Network, I shot a segment for the company that does a great job of explaining exactly what it is and why/how it works.

IMG_0613.JPG

I was impressed with the concept of the device and the people behind it.  Enough so, that I've agreed to do a clinical test of the device by  using it on a daily basis.  While we have 7 treatment areas in the facility, I tend to work out of 2 of those areas.  We've equipped both of those with a full AnterioRest setup.  I have not only the support for me, but I also have a support on the other side of the chair to help support my left arm.  I was in a car accident during dental school that badly damaged my left shoulder and I've dealt with some pretty strong pain in it as I've gotten older.  The AnterioRest folks were nice enough to provide this arm support to see if it will help.

The installation was pretty easy.  The guys from the company came to my office and coached Steve, my Goetze Dental service tech on exactly how to do the install.

IMG_0610.JPG
I've been using the AnterioRest for 2 days now including 2 endodontic procedures yesterday.  I love doing endo, but the strain of doing multiple cases can sometimes be difficult for me as my back is usually killing me by the end of the day.  I'm happy to report that yesterday, I finished with my back feeling good.  I'll be reporting back as we get further along with the evaluation, but so far, I'm very impressed with the product.
To end this post, here's a photo of my assistant Terri and I seeing our first patient after the install.

Y5 - Watching Your Battery While Watching Your Back

Y5.jpg
As I become more and more enamored of the Android OS, I find myself looking at apps designed for it and wondering "why not me?".  As most of you know, I'm currently using a Palm Pre and am none too happy with it at this point in time.  When I came across the info on Y5 Battery Saver it had a double impact on me.  The first was that it's another example of innovation from the app developers of both iPhone and Droid platforms.  Palm was supposed to have a thriving app store, but it never really got off the ground and now I really don't notice much innovation at all.
The second thing was how this innovation for Droid actually helps battery life. My Pre's battery life is definitely nothing to be proud of and part of that is due to WiFi.  The phone is constantly looking for a signal no matter where I am.  Now, I understand how that works.  I have great WiFi coverage in my house and in my office.  Because of that I want my phone to be able to access that connection and utilize it.  So in order to do that, I have the WiFi on at all times.  When I come in range, it connects automatically.
Of course the downside is that whenever I'm not in my home or my office, the device is wasting valuable battery life sniffing the air for a WiFi connection.  The Pre battery life is short anyway and adding that task to the mix just burns through it even faster.  So, the green eyed monster reared its ugly head when I saw this program for the Droid.  In MY world, I'm manually turning off WiFi to save battery and then trying to remember to turn it back on when I'm in range of a good and trusted signal.
The free Y5 Battery Save App basically keeps an eye on your WiFi pays attention when you connect to a hotspot.  It uses cellular signal triangulation to figure out your location (not GPS) and remembers where the hotspot is located.  It then tracks you and as you move away from that area, it turns the wireless function of your phone off to save the battery.  From time to time it will check your location using triangulation and if you are in an area where you've connected via WiFi before, it will turn on the WiFi function and your phone will connect to the network.  All of this happens with no user input at all!

Triodent - Better Mousetraps for Dentistry

I was fortunate enough on my last night in San Francisco to have dinner with the crew from Triodent including their CEO Simon McDonald.

Triodent is a great dental company hailing from New Zealand. They area a group of "outside the box" thinkers that create and sell lots of products that make the practice of dentistry easier.

While probably best know for the V3 Ring system, which is an outstanding sectional matrix solution, they also makes lots of great products such as the Triotray and the Griptab.

What I really like about Triodent is that they are in a never ending quest to keep making the lives of dentists easier. Their unique idea generating continually produces products that are truly "better mousetraps". At dinner I got a chance to see some of their newer products/ideas in early stages of development and came away impressed. While I can't divulge what these were, I can say that I'm excited to see them come to market. Keep an eye on the Triodent website to get details on these new products as they become available.

Finally, the folks at Triodent are just plain good people. They run their business the right way and are wonderful human beings to boot! Their products are highly recommended!

Logitech Launches New Wireless and Backlit Keyboard Model K800

logitech-K800 Keyboard.jpg
Sometimes it's the little things that make the differences.  One of the things I love about my MacBook Pro is the backlight feature of the keyboard.  You never know where you'll take a laptop... or a keyboard for that matter.
With so much of health care being digital now, it's easy to envision the old darkened viewing area of a hospital or a dental office.  Where once stood view-boxes, now stand monitors and keyboards.  I've been known to  spend some time reading cone beam scans in a dimly lit room to improve my ability to visualize the structures.  It's just so much easier without all the ambient "light pollution" that affects my ability to discern underlying structures.
So, I was delighted to see that one of my favorite peripheral companies, Logitech, has come out with a wireless keyboard that is backlit. In the darkened areas of radiographic interpretation, this device provides enough lighting to allow you to type and find the other keys you need to control your computer.
Backlighting the keyboard is one of those simple, but necessary things.  Once you've used it for any length of time, you'll slap yourself in the forehead and wonder how you ever got along without it.  It's also a bargain for only $99.  Try one, and you'll never give it back!

1ft Glowing End Power Strip from Ziotek

Glowing end cord.jpg
If you use as many electronics as I do, you're bound to get frustrated with power strips. I mean, they're fine as long as you use standard devices with standard plugs, but it seems that more and more there is a plot my manufacturers to make plugs as non-standard as possible. It's really not to unusual to have 2 or 3 outlets per strip go unused because of plugs that overlap or are oversized. It's very frustrating to buy a power strip with lots of outlets and then let some of them sit there unused through no fault of your own.
So, naturally I was intrigued/delighted when I came across the Liberator® from Ziotek. This cord connects your power strip to the A/C plug on your gadgets. It's nice because the cords are all uniform and therefore allow you to use every outlet on your power strip. They also have a small neon bulb in the female end that indicates if they are receiving power. This can be handy if you have more gadgets than available outlets in your power strip.
A 3 pack is available for $14.99. Not a bad price for a nifty little device that could decrease your stress level. Ordering details from cyberuys.com

High Q Dental Introduces the EOS Headlight

EOS.jpg

The folks at High Q Dental are currently taking orders on their soon to ship EOS headlight.  I was fortunate enough to get a unit to evaluate and have been very pleased with its performance.

The light is incredibly light, weighing in at .4 oz.  The overall weight is slightly greater since there needs to be a mounting bracket of some type attached, but even with the bracket, it is still light and comfortable.  The full output is 4.500 foot candles which, while not the brightest light on the market, is certainly bright enough for any dental usage.  The LED has a lifespan of 50K hours.

A feature that I really like is a rheostat to control the light output.  Most LED headlamps have buttons on the batter pack to control the light output.  Usually you get the choices of low, medium, or high.  The EOS has a small knob that can be turned to vary the output from full to off and everywhere in-between.  There is also a flip-down orange curing filter that is securely attached and easy to flip down while doing adhesive procedures that are light sensitive.

The battery pack charges from an electrical outlet (110v - 240v)and weighs in at 5 oz.  It has a clip that can allow it be attached to your belt or placed in a pocket.  A single charge will provide light for an entire day of dentistry.

The system is available for pre-order now and the entire setup is less than $700.  For all the info, visit the High Q webpage.  They've been around since the early 70's and make good products!

Zomm - Never Misplace your Mobile Phone Again

Every once in a while I stumble across a product that is a "slap your forehead" kind of thing because it's so simple and solves a common problem and I wonder "why didn't I think of that?"

The Zomm is that kind of product. In February I was at the Chicago Midwinter Dental Meeting and I was on my way to an event hosted by Danaher on the 99th floor of the Sears Tower. The building is considered a national landmark, and as such, you are screened before entering. It's similar to what you go through in airports. As I stepped up, I reached for my Palm Pre mobile phone only to realize it wasn't in my pocket. I panicked, as my entire life was in that phone. I had just gotten out of cab, was it rolling around on the floor bouncing all over Chicago? Fortunately when I got back to my room that night, it was laying on the bed where I had left it. I was relieved, to say the least.

Now there's Zomm. It's brilliant in its simplicity. The idea was conceived by a mom who kept hearing friends and her kids complaining about losing their phones. It connects to your phone via Bluetooth and is attached to your keychain. It sounds an alarm if you get more than a few yards away from your phone. It also provides call notification with full mobile speakerphone functionality, provides a panic button and calls emergency assistance from anywhere in the world with just one press of a button.

The device is ingenious and will be available in summer 2010. You can even preorder them for $79.99 from the Zomm website. Very cool!!!

Zipcharge Quick Charger

As someone who spends a fair amount of time on the road, I'm always on the hunt for things that can make road warrior life easier/less stressful.

I was really excited when I came across the Zipcharge. The idea is pretty cool. The device comes with tips that will charge almost any gadget you might have. Cool, you say, but there are lots of charger products that do that... and you're right. But the Zipcharge takes this to a whole different level.

Here's just a little snippet from the website:

Why we invented it?
At Freeplay we travel a lot so need every portable device imaginable to keep us in touch or to entertain .......... all of which seem to run out of batteries at the most inconvenient times and in the most inconvenient places.

We decided that we couldn’t monkey around with this problem ...... we needed something that could store enough power to fully charge our mobile phones and iPods in the time it took us to have a coffee. The quest for the 10 minute ZipCharge began......

How it works?
Inside the ZipCharge is the very latest battery technology. It’s all clever nano physics stuff that you need a very big forehead to understand. We have quite a few people in our company like that.

Our state of the art battery chemistry and control electronics charge 4 times faster than a lithium-ion battery so you can get mobile again in a flash!
