Kogan Deluxe Wi-Fi DAB+ radio review

Design and Specs

Recent technology trends haven't been kind to radio. Streaming services like Spotify mean it's easier than ever to discover new music without tuning into a radio station, but the good old wireless isn't dead yet. The Kogan Deluxe radio comes with a comprehensive spread of ways to enjoy radio transmissions, with DAB and FM tuners on-board alongside internet radio capabilities - plus an iPod dock.

Australian electronics manufacturer Kogan takes an interesting approach to its products. It cuts out the middle men - the retailers, importers and wholesalers - dealing with customers directly instead. It's this approach that has made it possible for so many features to be packed into the Kogan Deluxe Wi-Fi radio, while keeping the price at a low £119.

It'll deliver FM and DAB stations, as well as the tens of thousands available over the net thanks to the built-in Wi-Fi. The internet radio function can also play podcasts and the BBC's wealth of "listen again" content. To top this off, there's also an iPod dock on top and an auxiliary input should you be dying to plug in another source. Unusually, a phono audio output is included on the back panel - tantamount to admitting that its own speakers won't dazzle all and sundry, this nugget of humility is something many manufacturers can't swallow.

To complement the wealth of options is a very respectable array of drivers. On each end of the device are bass drivers, firing out to the side, while a single tweeter up front doles-out the high-end detail. On the bottom is a bass port, letting Kogan claim the Deluxe radio has a subwoofer - however, the drivers are really the full-range type you'd find in a standard hi-fi speaker.

What's not quite so impressive is the look. The Kogan Deluxe looks a little too much like what it is - a Far East manufactured budget radio here to undercut and outspec the opposition. There's not much style to the circular button island on its front and the front panel feels a bit thin. The glossy laminated outer shell is as tough as you like, but the inconsistent build and uninspiring aesthetics don't fool you into thinking this is a top-class device. The Pure Evoke Flow trounces it in the style stakes, but then that similarly-priced set is much smaller and only has a single speaker.

The display is a surprise hit though. It's a yellow OLED model and is superbly clear. This clarity comes in handy when browsing through the reams of radio stations and podcasts the Kogan Deluxe gives you access to. There's more navigation involved with a connected radio like this than a standard DAB set and a good display is a must.

Sony CMT-CX5 wall mountable hi-fi adds some tech chic to your decor

http://cdn.electricpig.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/CMT-CX5_white_low-res.jpg
Sony’s just outed a new hi-fi, and it’s a beauty. Wall-mountable, or able to sit on the shelf, the CMT-CX5 is a DAB+ capable radio, iPod dock, CD player, and more.

And it’s not all looks – on the inside is some serious tech. Click through to find out just how serious.

The CMT-CX5 has an impressive range of abilities. It’s a CD player, DAB and DAB+ radio, iPod dock, and plays tunes right off a USB. Not bad for something that looks more like a sculpture than a piece of audio kit.

Available in black or white, to match your fittings, the CX5 packs 40W RMS power, and is an instant upgrade to any kitchen or bedroom.

All-in-one audio goodness launches with the Geneva Sound Model S DAB

http://cdn.pocket-lint.com/images/Bhn4/genevasound-launches-model-s-dab-2.jpg?20110712-095031
iPhone and iPod docks don't come much slicker than the Swiss made Geneva Sound Model S DAB.

The piano-lacquered cabinet features an LED that shines through the front grill which shows things like volume and track names. On top is a clever "touch light" display similar to the iPods of yore, which uses touch sensitive controls that light up when your fingers come in contact with them.

The dock itself is motorised, closing when you remove your iPhone or iPod to keep the contacts below extra safe.

The built-in DAB radio can be used in conjunction with a programmable alarm clock to wake you up in the morning. It can also be controlled via the included remote or controls on top of the player.

The Model S uses two 3-inch drivers and a pair of bass ports to bring high quality playback from your iPod, whilst keeping things as small as possible.

Wi-Fi compatibility keeps up the cutting edge approach to the Model S, meaning uncompressed audio can be played back via receiver dongles and the 3.5mm input. There is also a chrome table stand included in the package onto which you can place the 30-watt iPhone/iPod amplifier and speaker.

Geneva Sound has done a good job keeping the Model S compact, sizing up at just 23.5 x 15.6 x17.6cm. It weighs just 3.35kg, meaning you can quite easily plonk it in your kitchen if you fancy a bit of cooking to the radio.

The Model S is priced in at £379 and is available now in white, black, red or silver.

Review : Orange Liveradio

I’ve always liked internet radios. These are boxes which look and operate like normal FM or DAB radios with audio instead coming from audio streams on the web.
This is the Orange Liveradio, which is available from the Orange Accessories website and on eBay. With DAB radio coverage being “iffy” at best I’ve used an internet radio for some time. This one is powered by mains but also charges some AA batteries (supplied) so that you can unplug and carry it around the house. 4000 stations are available and you can add your own.
If I’m honest this unit has been around for a number of years now and has recently gone into the clearance section of the Orange Accessories website. Everything still works as expected though and, for the price (around £25-£29) it’s a very nice device indeed.
The instructions are clear and concise. It’ll get you hooked onto any wireless router without much fuss and the controls are easy enough to figure out even without the manual. The speakers may seem small but give a definite “oomph” and a deep bass response. On the front 8 preset keys let you hop into various saved radio stations and there’s a wide range to choose from.
If your favourite station isn’t listed you can add it in, although the email address you’re meant to email (cs@myliveradio.co.uk) doesn’t work because the domain isn’t registered.
There’s a wide range of features too. You can plug in a USB key and play and MP3 stored on it easily and you can do the same with PC’s or servers on your local network sharing music too. There’s a podcast section, an audio book section, audio backgrounds and alarm tones.
Once you’re hooked onto the web you can browse to Liveradio website and interact with your device. You can create your own folder, add stations into it and move things around – even allocate your preset keys from the comfort of your PC.
What I really liked about this was the price, the portability (I stuck it in the bathroom while bathing my son), the sound quality was great, the batteries had no problems (an on-screen indicator shows how your signal and battery is performing) and the audio streams are sorted into type or location. The addition of the USB playback and speedy boot time was good to see and the build quality is fantastic.
Orange. I liked this. More internet radios should be on the market like this. The only thing preventing the rise and rise of kit like this is bandwidth capping and traffic-shaping by ISP’s. It’s a fantastic device which picked up WAY more stations than any DAB or FM radio station I’ve ever had and I can carry it around the house with the in-built handle.
If you see one of these knocking around eBay, give it a spin.

Sony introduces new G Series micro Hi-Fi in Europe

 http://www.akihabaranews.com/wp-content/uploads//images/9/49/100149/1.jpg
G Series micro Hi-Fi systems have been crafted to deliver a sound quality to impress even the most demanding audio enthusiast. Drawing upon years of expertise developing amplifiers, our G Series micro Hi-Fi systems use innovative geometric grounding technology to minimise amplifier distortion so you hear accurate rhythm and tempo whether you’re listening to a thumping rock anthem or a gentle classical track.

Compact speakers are designed to handle the high power output of the amp and deliver a natural acoustic balance. Every tiny detail, from grooved internal speaker walls to the woofer and tweeter construction, creates a pure sound which lets you lose yourself in the music performance.

Classic looks and a premium finish

Simple and elegant, G Series micro Hi-Fi systems recall classic analogue Hi-Fi systems. The main unit is finished in solid aluminium with a hairline finish and retro-look control knobs. The light colour of the aluminium creates a striking contrast with the high-gloss black piano speakers.

Design is subtle, understated and always focused on the listening experience. Moving the volume control a millimetre to the right and adding an outer ring adds to the beautiful simple design. Using polyurethane paint rather than cheaper polyester paint in speaker coating minimises unnecessary resonance for a crisp, clear audio performance

Choose your music, your way

G Series micro Hi-Fi systems offer a variety of ways to play your favourite music. Certified as Made for iPod / iPhone, you can easily connect an iPod or iPhone via USB and give tracks a big audio sound. Or plug an MP3 player or USB memory stick into the USB port and make the most of your digital music library.

G Series micro Hi-Fi systems with Wi-Fi (CMT-G2BNiP and CMT-G2NiP) mean you can connect to a wireless home network and play music from your PC or Internet radio channels – with no clutter of cables. Use the Wi-Fi to stream tracks to Wi-Fi devices in other rooms. You can even download a free iPhone app and control a G Series Hi-Fi from anywhere at home.

There’s DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) radio too. Enjoy even more music, news and sport in digital quality. DAB means easier tuning, reduced interference, information on artists and tracks and access to a huge range of local and national radio stations.

The choice for music connoisseurs

“G Series micro Hi-Fi systems have a classic design style but are packed with the latest audio and network innovations,” says Yuji Kitayama, Director, Home Entertainment of Europe. “The premium finish and purity of the sound performance will give audio enthusiasts everywhere an exquisite listening experience.”

Fix Bing's Mistakes using Windows Phone Mango Beta

In our Windows phone Mango preview device there's a nice new feature in the menu for Bing locations that lets you suggest changes or corrections. It only shows up in searches for locations really, but it's a good way to easily help Bing fix some of the errors or recent changes to local places that you may come across.

When you tap the "suggest changes" command, it will load a webpage with fields relating to the location that you had previously selected. From there you can tell Bing that the business has closed down, or you can update their address, phone number, and category. I kind of wish there was a field for updating the location's website URL as I've seen some places with missing links that would be useful to have. There's also a map where you can tap to move the push pin location and submit it to Bing in order to update the mapping data.
