REVIEW >> Augmented Reality Cinema shows you the scene where it was filmed

Normally, I don’t report on Apps here, as we could do a blog for that. However, this one I just couldn’t resist, but it is sadly still a concept.

If you are a regular reader of this blog, and I am told that we have many, then you know that I am nuts over all things augmented reality. This particular one can be used a famous movie locations.

You can watch the video to see it in action, and it looks simple to use. Find the spot where a movie was filmed, like the Westminster Bridge in 28 Days Later, and you will see the scene played out.

As you can see in the video, the locations are in the UK. I hope this App will eventually come with locations for the United States.

Personally, I love going to places were movies were shot. I visited the town of Preston, Idaho, just so I could see the final shot of Napoleon Dynamite. It would have been very cool to use an App like this there.

In fact, I can see this App being used for movie-related tours. Forks, Washington could be used for a Twilight-based tour, and I’m pretty sure that L.A. and New York City have plenty of places to use this App.

REVIEW >> Google Attempts to Integrate Video Chat in Chrome

Google is out to compete with Skype as the search engine giant is integrating an open-source video chat software into the Google Chrome browser. The plan would go beyond the features of Gmail and Google Voice.

The WebRTC is introduced as an open-source, royalty-free audio-and-video chat software, even promising to work with other browser developers such as Mozilla and Opera. Because it is open-source, any website can make use of the new software and create their very own program that could compete with Skype.

With these developments, you wonder whether Skype is shaking on its knees.

M. Video: a demand for gaming consoles for the year grew by 30%

The company "M. Video" summed up the sales of consoles in the I half of 2011. The main trend in this market: gamers a massive shift in the console. This is due, according to the company, with a decrease in average prices for game consoles and content for them.

Playing the direction of "M. Video" on the I half of 2011 has become the most dynamic. Like for like 6 months (as of June 20, 2011) was 30%. Russian gamers are moving to the Western model, are increasingly preferring to play the console rather than PC.

During the first half of "M. Video" sold about 60 thousand gaming devices. At the same time showed the highest dynamic console XBOX and PlayStation - increase over the same period last year, 52% and 20% respectively - this is due to the introduction of contactless controllers for consoles games: Kinect and PS Move. During the year, analysts predict demand for the preservation of existing consoles, and by the end of the year will be implemented over 200 thousand game consoles.

Over the past six months, there was a decline of interest of buyers to portable game consoles, with support for 3D - this is due to the high price and lack of sufficient content. Since the start of sales of the portable console Nintendo 3DS, in March 2011, "M. Video" was sold less than a thousand pieces.

Texture compression tips for Sony Ericsson’s Xperia™ phones

Are you unsure about which texture format is supported by your Xperia™ smartphone? Are you also wondering which texture compression should you use? We’ve got some helpful texture compression tips from Jonas Gustavsson, a Senior Graphics Expert for the Sony Ericsson Research and Technology group.
Texture compression is a specialized form of image compression designed for storing texture maps in 3D computer graphics rendering systems. Unlike conventional image compression algorithms, texture compression algorithms are optimized for random access. The issue with texture compression is that different graphics processor vendors support different texture formats, unfortunately these formats are not compatible. The good news is, all OpenGL ES 2.0 devices support a common format called ETC1. ETC1 isn’t the best texture format (for example, it lacks support for RGBA, textures with alpha channels), but it’s the most common format supported. On current Sony Ericsson Android™ phones such as the Xperia™ X10 or Xperia™ PLAY, we have support for Uncompressed, ETC1, and ATITC through the Qualcomm Adreno 200 and 205.
Note: The Android SDK provides a compressor utility (see sdk/tools/etc1tool) and runtime tools for this format.
Deciding which texture compression to use is a fairly subjective question but Sony Ericsson has the following suggestions:
For the least amount of device restrictions, use uncompressed textures.
For devices with OpenGL ES 2.0, use ETC1 on RGB and uncompressed on RGBA.
Alternatively provide variations including ETC1 + uncompressed, ATITC, PVRTC, DXT1, DXT3 and DXT5.
An alternative to TC support with Alpha is to use 2 discreet textures using ETC1. To do that, you split the RGBA texture into an RGB-texture and an alpha-texture, which is an RGB-texture with Alpha in G-channel, and R- and B-channels unused. Then you create a custom shader where the simple texture fetch is replaced by two; one to the first texture for RGB, and one to the second for A.
The following table explains the supported texture compression according to vendor:
Mobile GPU TC Support Without Alpha TC Support With Alpha
NVIDIA Tegra ETC1 DXT1, DXT3 and DXT5
Qualcomm Adreno ETC1 ATITC
Imagination PowerVR ETC1 PVRTC
To check what the current device supports, query GL_EXTENSIONS then provide the different variants you support in the APK, use the Multiple APK coming to Android Market, or simply download variants off the web over http.
An example of a GL_EXTENSIONS script (by Chris Pruett ) is provided below:
String extensions = " " + gl.glGetString(GL10.GL_EXTENSIONS) + " ";
String version = gl.glGetString(GL10.GL_VERSION);
String renderer = gl.glGetString(GL10.GL_RENDERER);
boolean isSoftwareRenderer = renderer.contains("PixelFlinger");
// On 1.6 and newer, we could use ActivityManager.getDeviceConfigurationInfo() to get the GL version.
// To include 1.5, I'll use the GL version string.
boolean isOpenGL10 = version.contains("1.0");
boolean supportsDrawTexture = extensions.contains("GL_OES_draw_texture"); // draw_texture extension
boolean supportsETC1 = extensions.contains("GL_OES_compressed_ETC1_RGB8_texture"); // standard ETC1 support extension
// VBOs are guaranteed in GLES1.1, but they were an extension under 1.0.
// There's no point in using VBOs when using the software renderer (though they are supported).
boolean supportsVBOs = !isSoftwareRenderer && (!isOpenGL10 || extensions.contains("vertex_buffer_object"));

REVIEW >> ICANN Approves a Free-For-All in Domain Names

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the organization that approves Web domains, has given a thumbs up on a new domain-naming system that enables anything to be accepted, and we mean everything like “www.face.book,” “www.green.eco,” or “computer.programming.”

You can sense that this new rule would be a field day for cyber squatters and phishers, but ICANN took care of that… in a way. Instead of the traditional $6.95 annual registration fee, coming up with such non-traditional domains would cost them an application fee of $185,000 plus a yearly $25,000 fee to maintain the domain.

The first batch of these “anything goes” domains are expected to go online within a year.

Device Analyzer

Get statistics about your phone use and contribute to scientific research!
Device Analyzer works on Android devices running Android 2.1 or higher.

Device Analyzer collects usage statistics in the background while you use your phone.
This data is stripped of personally identifying information as best as possible while preserving useful information. Periodically the recorded data is uploaded to our server at the University of Cambridge, where we will aggregate it with other people's data and draw inferences from the patterns that emerge.

This is a real-time map of devices as they upload data to the university's server:

This map does not reveal identities of individual contributors nor does it provide arbitrary geographical resolution.

What's in for me?
Personal analytics - extracting data from the things we do every day, e.g. phone calls or our movement patterns - is becoming increasingly popular. We provide you with new ways to look at what is happening inside your mobile phone!
The website allows you to download all the raw data we collect from your phone
There are some basic analytics at the moment but development is ongoing and more will follow soon:
For example, we can recommend you the best phone plan based on your historical usage
or recommend apps that you may be interested in based on which apps you use the most.
New features will use historic data and so it's worth starting to collect now!
Why do we collect your data?
Perhaps surprisingly, it is not well understood what people do with their smart phones. Which of the many features do you use? And how often? Do you often miss calls? How many text messages do you send? Mobile phone carriers know your calling patterns but often don't make them available to manufacturers. They in turn conduct interviews and surveys to see what people like about their phones and what they use them for, but these are always limited to a relatively small group of people.

Device Analyzer performs rigorous, automatic collection. It doesn't get tired after a week of recording what you have done and can provide a large and detailed data set covering a broad audience. We will use this data set to make recommendations for the improvement of future smart phones, extract patterns and trends and will let you benefit from our insights with cool new statistics and recommendations based on what other people do.

With your permission, we would like to share your data set with other researchers worldwide so that they can get even more from it! If you don't want that you can just let us know with a single click and your data will only be used within the University of Cambridge.

What is collected?
Here is an overview of the types of data we collect:

when you turn on your phone or charge it
when you make phone calls and send texts
which apps you use
wifi and bluetooth devices near your phone
your coarse (network-based location)
