HTC Evo 3D 4G Phone: Why Its So Much More than a 3D Gadget

HTC Evo 3D 4G Review: Unless you’ve been hibernating in a cave somewhere, you are probably aware that the highly anticipated HTC EVO 3D has officially launched, giving the public their first taste of a glasses free 3D smartphone. Since the phone has only been on the streets a day or so, there isn’t a ton of user feedback, but what has come in so far is a 5 out of 5 stars among Amazon buyers (4 reviews total) and a 4 out of 5 stars for CNET respondents (16 reviews total). Things are looking pretty positive coming out of the starting gate. So is 3D eye candy all the HTC Evo 3D brings to the game? We would answer that with a resounding NO!

The glasses free 3D is breakthrough technology. No other phone allows you to capture 3D still photos, record 3D video, and to view content in 3D on your display. Its cool, its fun, and ads an element of intrigue to the EVO 3D. However, its not the end all and be all of what this savvy smartphone delivers, nor does the 3D deserve all the ‘ooohhhs’ and ‘aaahhhs’. Once you’ve raced to see what all the 3D hype is about, the nation’s first glasses free 3D phone deserves a second look, this time at its inner workings, feature set, and performance quality.

The processor that gives this phone its juice is the muscular 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon dual core processor. Its crazy fast, easily satisfying your need for speed, and very powerful, ensuring that multitasking is optimal, demanding movies and video watching are superb, and extreme gaming is delivered with perfection. The Snapdragon dual core processor equips the Evo 3D with the muscle to handle virtually anything you throw at it like its a walk in the park. Couple that with the latest Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system, and you’ve got the makings of the ultimate smartphone user experience.

The Android Gingerbread OS brings with it a faster and even more refined user experience, with even deeper Google integration, many more pre-loaded Google and Android apps with one touch access, Google mobile services, and new features such as Voice Action, which provides a wide range of voice activated functions. Being an Android powered phone also means full Adobe Flash player support, which we know is the top media player technology out there. This translates into access to the entire web, fast frame rates, and the best possible rendering of graphics and images on your movies, games, and web pages. Add glasses free 3D to this recipe and you’ve got the ultimate multimedia experience on your mobile phone. Keep your app and game variety fresh with access to thousands of them at the Android Market.

You can enjoy all this enhanced multimedia and web browsing content on the brilliant 4.3″ 3D qHD capacitive multi-touch display, which effectively renders all your movies, videos, games, and web pages in all their 3D (or 2D) glory. The colors are rich and vibrant, and the visuals are clear and crisp, and when applicable, three dimensional. HTC truly made mobile entertainment on the Evo 3D a top priority down to the smallest detail, which is certainly what we’d expect from the first glasses free 3D phone, right?

The Evo 3D presents the HTC Sense UI (user interface), which is being praised as the Best UI of 2011 hands down. Since we first encountered the HTC Sense UI, we’ve felt that it operates as smooth as silk, and provides an exceptionally intuitive and user friendly experience. Rather than burdening the phone with a cluttered overlay, the HTC Sense streamlines, simplifies, and brings innovative features to the table, all packaged in a way that makes it easy to become acquainted with your new phone. Sophisticated but super easy to use, that’s how we like it.

Additional features on the HTC EVO 3D include HDMI and DLNA HD content output and file sharing, built-in GPS, Mobile Hotspot capability, pre-loaded Google mobile services, both front and rear facing cameras for 3D stills, 2D stills, and 3D video capture, as well as video chats, pre-loaded access to Blockbuster 3D content, and of course, the blazing fast Sprint 4G WiMax network for crazy fast data speeds and call quality. Clearly, the HTC Evo 3D is much more than just a 3D treat, its an all encompassing, high quality smartphone with rich features, a zippy and efficient performance, and all the high-end components that will ensure it gets the job done. And oh ya, it makes calls too.

The one thing about the HTC Evo 3D that did not knock our socks off was the amount of internal memory at only 4 GB, but its memory expansion card slot takes care of that. The Evo 3D made it to the top of the Amazon smartphone bestseller list before it was even released, and is priced quite a bit lower than phones with comparable feature sets and functionality that don’t offer the glasses free 3D recording, capture and playback.

You can purchase the HTC Evo 3D 4G smartphone from Amazon for $179.99 with free shipping, and free activation through midnight on June 26th, PDT. This saves you a nice $20 on the price, plus the activation fee, so its a nice little savings. The discounted pricing does require a new Sprint 2 year service contract.
