Tesco has launched a new app for Android smartphone users that makes grocery shopping easier for customers who shop at Tesco Extra stores.
Tesco’s in-store satnav system app will allow customers to locate grocery items on their Android smartphone and pick up the products quickly, using an in store map and navigation routes.
Android mobile phone users will input their grocery list into the app. The app will in turn show customers where items from their grocery list are located in the supermarket, using a store map to show aisles where products are located.
The map can also pinpoint where you are located in the store. Additionally, the app will automatically figure out the shortest route to your items around the store, allowing shoppers the ability to pick their groceries up in the fastest time possible.
The Tesco app will use in-store WiFi hotspots, unlike a sat-nav car which uses GPS.
The hope is that the app will speed up customer’s shopping trips, give shoppers a quick and easy route to collect their groceries, and save customers from crowded aisles and frustrating shopping experiences.
Tesco admits it expects to see some initial problems with the program, and acknowledges that customers may be unwilling to try it.
A Tesco Extra store in Romford, Essex has become the first store to have the trial, and Tesco says the program is ‘up and working.’
The app is currently only available for Android smartphone users, and will require Android 2.2 or higher.
Tesco will not bring this app to other stores for some time, as the company needs to ‘think about how useful it’s going to be.’ Additionally, the supermarket chain needs to make sure the app is easy enough for everyone to use.
