Tech News: Is Facebook Planning to Buy Skype?

A report from Mashable claims that two “reliable” sources say that Facebook is negotiating with Skype on either buying the company or forming a joint venture.

One of the sources said Facebook may buyout Skype for a cost between US$3 billion and $4 billion. The other source, meanwhile, said the deal is actually a joint venture between the two companies.

The synergy between Skype and Facebook is nothing new. Last October, Skype released its version 5.0 software for Windows, which featured a Facebook tab that allows users to chat or call FB friends using Skype.

But Facebook is not the only one whose eyes are fixed on Skype. One of the sources said that Google is also discussing with Skype about a potential joint venture.

When asked for comment, a representative from Skype responded, “As a practical matter, we avoid commenting on rumor and speculation.”
