Asus Eee PC with Ubuntu Linux ship

ASUSTeK is preinstallation of the operating system of Canonical Ubuntu for the first time in some netbooks targeting Linux, Canonical market said Thursday.

Dell is the only other major PC vendor to pre-load Ubuntu on its netbooks.

Canonical said that Asus has begun shipping since June 1, three models of Eee PC, 1001PXD, 1011PX and 1015PX, with Ubuntu 10.10 preinstalled. The OS has been configured to work with the processor and hardware networking on netbooks.

ASUS was one of the top PC manufacturers shipping with netbooks, offering the Eee PC with several versions of the Linux including Xandros operating system from 2007. ASUS then released Windows XP netbooks as of 2008, after Microsoft began offering Windows XP Starter, a stripped down version of Windows XP. ASUS now preloads Windows on the majority of its netbooks with Linux playing second violin.

Ubuntu 10.10, name code Maverick Meerkat, a targeted editions PCs and netbooks, but canonical does not say which edition may be preinstalled on the Eee PC. Netbook Edition, called Netbook Remix has a UI specialized for smaller screens. The latest version of Ubuntu, version 11.04, eliminates the Netbook Remix Edition, integrate the code in the main base of the bone.

The OS on the Eee PC comes with a complete suite of productivity and support for Adobe Flash, said Canonical.

Netbooks Asus more in the future be delivered with Ubuntu preinstalled, said canonical. Previously several versions of Ubuntu have been certified to work with some Asus Eee PC models.
