Sony Ericsson adds three fantastic, new phones to product portfolio

In a press conference in Singapore today, Sony Ericsson introduced the addition of three new, exciting phones to its portfolio – the Xperia™ ray, Xperia™ active and the Sony Ericsson txt. Xperia™ ray and Xperia™ active are the newest members of the Xperia family of smartphones. The Sony Ericsson txt is an entertaining messaging phone.
Introducing the sleek and stylish Xperia™ ray

Xperia™ ray

If you’ve always wanted a smartphone that combines beautiful design with a rich feature set, your search ends here. The Xperia™ ray is a stunning, new smartphone with a stylish aluminum frame. Though only 9.4 mm thin, it still features a 3.3” screen and runs the latest Android platform for smartphones (Gingerbread 2.3). The smartphone has a powerful 1 GHz processor, a Reality Display with Mobile BRAVIA® Engine, and an 8.1MP camera with Exmor R® for mobile and HD video functionality. Xperia™ active – the perfect smartphone for the “on the go” lifestyle

Xperia™ active

For the person whose world is in constant motion – whether it’s biking to work, exercising at lunch, or tending to kids at the park – this busy life demands a phone that can keep up with all your activities. Look no further than the Xperia™ active, a compact smartphone designed for consumers with an active lifestyle. Running the latest Android platform (Gingerbread 2.3), this smartphone comes with a 3” screen, a Reality Display with Mobile BRAVIA engine, a 5 MP camera with HD video functionality, and a powerful 1GHz processor. In addition, the Xperia™ active is dust proof and water resistant, and is able to work perfectly when either the screen or a user’s fingers are wet.
Also, the Xperia™ active comes pre-loaded with sports apps that enable consumers to easily track their fitness levels. Users can set their ideal training route using the built-in GPS, Barometer and Compass. On-screen heart rate and pulse can be monitored in real-time (enabled by ANT+ wireless networking technology), while the iMapMyFitness app can monitor day to day performance.
Note: For more information on ANT+ support, including an ANT API for Android™, check out this article. For a video explaining how to use ANT+-enabled Sony Ericsson phones with ANT+ -enabled health and fitness products, view this YouTube clip.
A truly unique feature of the Xperia™ active lies in its pressure sensor for barometric measuring. Developers can use this sensor in applications, which can be accessed through the Android sensor API. One cool idea is to use the pressure sensor to calculate altitude, for example, changes in pressure relative to the altitude. Below is a known formula describing how to calculate the altitude.

Pressure to Altitude Conversion (Troposphere)

1976 US Standard Atmosphere is based on the assumptions:
Zero altitude pressure P0 = 101325 [Pa] (= 1’013.25 mbar)
Zero altitude temperature T0 = 288.15 K
Temperature gradient Tgradient = 6.5/1000 [K/m] in the troposphere
Temperature in the stratosphere = -56.46°C
R is the specific gas constant R=R*/M0 R = 287.052 [J/(K * kg)]
100 Pa = 1 mbar
Stay tuned to Developer World for more information about this sensor going forward.
