VCNO Speaks at Spring 2011 Navy Now Forum

By Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Mikelle D. Smith, Defense Media Activity - Navy

WASHINGTON (NNS) -- The vice chief of naval operations (VCNO) addressed defense industry business leaders at the Spring 2011 Navy Now Forum held at the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington, D.C., April 27.

The event, sponsored by the Association of the United States Navy (AUSN), gave senior Navy officials and business leaders the opportunity to enhance and develop relationships that will strengthen current and future functions of the Navy.

VCNO Adm. Jonathan W. Greenert touched on several topics including recent operations in Libya and Japan, and on-going initiatives to train and equip Sailors while taking into account the existing economic and wartime reality.

"I want to thank AUSN for hosting their third Navy Now forum," said Greenert. "Venues such as this create opportunities for the Navy and industry partners to learn from each other, strengthen relationships, and provide needed feedback and candor."

During a question and answer portion of the forum, Greenert communicated further strategies that will preserve the cohesion of commands and take Navy forces beyond their present capabilities.

"An atmosphere of clarity, mutual understanding and increased transparency will be needed to effectively deal with the increasingly inevitable budget challenge while building the Navy of the future," said Greenert.

Executive Director of AUSN Rear Adm. Casey Coane said that from an industry standpoint, concern has been placed on what the Navy would like from companies and how they will work together to effectively execute all aspects of readiness.

"This is a partnership and collaboration built from communication," said Coane. "Because we [AUSN] are an association not part of the defense department, we can add a point-of-view from outside Washington and the Pentagon. The more opportunities Sailors have to understand issues that decide what happens in the Navy, the more aware they become."

This was the third Navy Now forum held by AUSN. The association has been active since 1957, and their mission is to advance interests of all members of the Navy community by supporting personal and professional needs of Sailors.

Earth's Satellite

This waxing gibbous moon with 83 percent of the disk illuminated was photographed by retired AT&T engineer and amateur photographer Ralph H. Bernstein on April 14, 2011, in Monmouth County, New Jersey. A gibbous moon is but one of the moon's phases and occurs when the size of the illuminated portion is greater than half, but not yet a full moon. A waxing gibbous moon is the period between a first quarter moon and a full moon, when the illuminated region of the moon is increasing each day.

MMOWGLI: An Experiment in Generating Collective Intelligence

By John Ohab

Garth Jensen is currently the Director of Innovation at the Carderock Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center. Garth was previously an Office of Naval Research Science Advisor at the Pentagon.

mmowgli is both the coolest project I have ever worked on and the hardest to describe in words, but here it goes: mmowgli is an experiment in generating collective intelligence and a pilot project being developed by the Office of Naval Research.

Beyond that, mmowgli is ultimately the answer to a few questions, ones that haunted me every day during my tour as a Science Advisor at the Pentagon: why did I experience such a disconnect between technologists and “innovators,” on one hand, and warfighters and end users on the other? Why didn’t “game changing innovations” generate more enthusiasm from those who were “in the game?” And what was I doing to make it better?

As my Pentagon tour drew to a close, these questions nagged at me and morphed into a thousand others: What if we took a heavy, formal approach, and made it lighter and more of a continuous conversation instead of a blueprint? What if you didn’t need a fully formed idea to make a contribution? What if ideas, even half-formed ones, could meet up in space and recombine with other ideas to form new ones? What if this conversation engaged more stakeholders and tolerated more excursions? Finally, what if this conversation became so rich and compelling that, instead of truncating the debate, it actually enlarged the universe of possibilities?

A pivotal moment occurred as these questions were swirling around in my head. I attended a speech by Marina Gorbis, Executive Director of The Institute for the Future. What she presented became the kernel of an idea that grew into mmowgli. Marina showed me a world where Alternate Reality Games were being used to engage the imaginations of thousands players to harness fresh insights; where Massive Multiplayer Forecasting Games were redefining how we look at technology horizons; where companies like IBM were using Innovation Jams to create value across their entire workforce and with their stakeholders; and where the notion of innovation as a social phenomenon was moving to the fore.

From there, it was a short leap for me to connect the dots between Marina’s world and my own struggles with innovation — mmowgli was born. In reality, it wasn’t quite that easy. We’ve had to persist through all of the typical hurdles associated with any first of its kind innovation. But, now that we’re almost there, we’ve got a really engaging game in store, and I’m excited about the launch.

mmowgli goes live in just a few weeks. You can register for the game at http://mmowgli.nps.edu/mmowgli. I’m looking forward to meeting you online during the game.

LUXEON LEDs provide path to efficient, high quality illumination with white as well as royal blue LEDs for remote phosphor solutions

SAN JOSE, USA: The world of conventional lighting has allowed for a wide variety of luminaires, but few options when it came to engineering the light source. However, with LUXEON LEDs, solution providers have a host of options and the ability to select the best light source approach for their specific application.

In the illumination segment where white light is dominant, there are two primary approaches. The most common method is to use white LEDs. The second approach is to use remote phosphor with a royal blue LED. The second approach is gaining in popularity with the availability of high performance LUXEON royal blue LEDs.

“Our comprehensive illumination portfolio approach with LUXEON is to ensure that our customers have the support, tools and product options to design and optimize their solution so that it meets their business, market and end customer needs,” said Steve Barlow, senior VP, Sales and Marketing. “Regardless of the approach our customers choose, producing the highest performance white LED based system design or the most efficient remote phosphor solution requires that you start with the very best royal blue LED device technology.”

Enabling high quality illumination in white light that delivers on the promise of LED lighting has been a primary objective for the LUXEON portfolio and today’s Illumination Grade LUXEON LEDs fulfill this promise in a number of ways. The portfolio provides:
* A broad selection of CRI and CCT combinations.
* High efficacy at operating temperatures (Tj 85°C).
* Superior light output at operating temperatures.
* Uniform color throughout the beam.
* LED to LED consistency.
* Minimal or no color shift at operating conditions.
* Complete lumen maintenance data and reports.

Each of these Illumination Grade attributes is measureable and, in the case of LUXEON LEDs, publicly available.

A second approach to producing high quality white light is with remote phosphor. This method uses royal blue LEDs as the light source, and instead of applying the phosphor directly to the LED chip, as is done with white LEDs, the phosphor is positioned several millimeters from the LEDs.

For solution providers that prefer this approach, Lumileds offers the most powerful royal blue LEDs available today.

A key measure of royal blue LED performance is wall plug efficiency (WPE). LUXEON Rebel ES royal blue LEDs deliver the industry’s highest wall plug efficiency, ~56 percent at 350 mA. Because of their high efficacy, the LUXEON LEDs enable optimized solutions when matched with an efficient phosphor component. These are the same royal blue LED chips that are used to make the company’s white portfolio and as such, they deliver industry leading lumen maintenance, reliability, and consistency from LED to LED.

Bing's Shopping Section Gets a Revamp from Microsoft

BingThe next couple of weeks are going to be pretty busy for most, what with Mother's Day, summer vacation and school graduations all on the horizon. Well, because of that, Microsoft has given the shopping section of its Bing search engine a little bit of a makeover which includes the ability to link it to Facebook accounts.

With this new integration into Facebook, users can be reminded of their friend's and family's birthdays and even share their shopping lists with them according to a report by Microsoft.

Other changes include a redesigned shopping home page with a new layout that is specifically designed to give more prominent placement to top search results, popular products and even related articles with the intention of making things easier and faster to scan this information.

A revamped results page now features bigger images at the top of the screen. It also offers more filters in order to fine-tune results and even let users hover over different items in order to trigger the display of additional product information.

Even though Google is the top search engine without a doubt, Microsoft keeps on chugging along, investing heavily in Bing for years now. Officials from Microsoft maintain that there are big opportunities set to radically improve the search user experience. Microsoft also stated that if it continues innovating with Bing, it could definitely make a run at Google.

However, that doesn't mean that Google is just going to sit there and take it. The search master is constantly improving algorithms in order to make sure it retains users' loyalty and defends its core market.

To improve its chances against Google, Microsoft as well as Yahoo are both implementing a search partnership. However, last week Yahoo's CEO Carol Bartz stated that Microsoft's AdCenter search ad system isn't yielding the results the companies have expected. However, both Yahoo and Microsoft have both said that they are confident that improvements to AdCenter will boost its revenue-per-search rate to the expected levels before the year is up.
