REVIEW >> The New iMac

The ultimate all-in-one desktop now features quad-core processors, up to 3x faster graphics*, Thunderbolt, and a FaceTime HD camera.

Starting at $1,199.00.

Design
Big, beautiful displays.
21.5- and 27-inch displays.

Today’s iMac has come a long way from the first 15-inch iMac. Take one look and you’ll see just how far. A 21.5- or 27-inch display with edge-to-edge glass covers nearly the entire front of the enclosure. When all you see is the display, nothing gets between you and what’s onscreen. Movies, TV shows, FaceTime HD video calls, websites, photos — everything looks stunning on the widescreen 16:9 iMac display.

LED backlighting.

The more pixels a display has, the more light those pixels need to achieve the best picture possible. And that’s exactly what the LED backlighting in iMac does: It pushes light through each pixel with remarkable brightness and efficiency. Because the LED backlight doesn’t take up much space, the iMac enclosure stays thin — even with all the high-performance components inside.

Talk about screen appeal.
High resolution.

The 21.5-inch iMac features 1920-by-1080 HD resolution. Apple engineers could simply have stretched that resolution up and out for the 27-inch iMac. Instead, they took the display well beyond HD with 2560-by-1440 resolution. That’s 78 percent more pixels than the 21.5-inch iMac display.

All-in-one simplicity
Evolution of iMac.

It was a great idea then, and it’s a great idea now. The all-in-one design of the first flat-panel iMac cleaned up the desktop. It put everything you need — display, processor, graphics card, hard drive, optical drive, memory, and more — inside one simple enclosure. Today, iMac is the gold standard for an all-in-one desktop computer.

Seamless enclosure.

While you’ll find a collection of ports on the back of iMac, you won’t find much else. A seamless, precision-forged enclosure makes the back one continuous aluminum surface. And there’s only one cord: the power cord.

Cool, quiet components.

The widescreen iMac display allows more room to separate the two hottest components, the CPU and the GPU. This keeps things cool inside the iMac enclosure. Apple engineers also implemented an intelligent control system that monitors temperatures and delivers just the right amount of airflow to critical components. And the three fans inside iMac have been tuned to be ultraquiet, so you hardly know it’s on.

A tidier desktop.

iMac comes with a wireless keyboard and either a Magic Mouse or a Magic Trackpad — your choice. With Magic Mouse, you get a mouse unlike any other. Its smooth, seamless design lets you control everything with simple gestures. But if you’re all gestures all the time, then opt for Magic Trackpad. Its touch-friendly all-glass surface gives you plenty of room to scroll, swipe, pinch, and rotate to your fingers’ content. When you purchase your new iMac from the Apple Online Store, you have the option to replace the included Magic Mouse with the Magic Trackpad at no extra cost.

Details that matter.
Edge-to-edge glass.

The glass that surrounds the LED-backlit display wraps around the edge of the aluminum enclosure.
Tapered pedestal.

Another victory over clutter, the finely tapered pedestal practically disappears on the desktop.
Integrated speakers.

Built-in speakers deliver loud, clear sound with notable bass response and very little distortion.

Features
LED backlighting. One bright idea.

Full brightness with no waiting. That’s the advantage of the LED-backlit iMac display. Unlike displays that take time to warm up before they reach maximum brightness, an LED-backlit display is instantly on and uniformly bright. LED backlighting also lets you finely tune the iMac display to suit the ambient light in even the dimmest room.

More pixels. Better picture.

The 21.5-inch iMac features 1920-by-1080 resolution. The 27-inch iMac boasts even greater resolution of 2560-by-1440. That’s a whopping 78 percent more pixels than the 21.5-inch model. And more pixels mean images look crisp and true to life. A 1000:1 contrast ratio gives you more vibrant colors and blacker blacks. All in a 16:9 aspect ratio — the same as an HDTV.

Stunning from every angle.

The iMac display looks great from any seat in the house, thanks to a premium display technology called in-plane switching (IPS). IPS gives you a bright picture with excellent color — even if you’re viewing the display from the side.

Next-generation quad-core Intel processors.

Powered by quad-core processors, the new iMac is our fastest yet — up to 70 percent faster than the previous generation.1 Every model in the lineup comes standard with the latest Intel Core i5 quad-core processor. You even have the option to configure the 21.5- or 27-inch iMac with the Intel Core i7, the fastest quad-core processor available. But why stop there? Add up to 16GB of DDR3 memory and an ultrafast 256GB solid-state drive,2 and you’ve got an all-in-one that can handle just about anything
All-new advanced AMD Radeon HD graphics.

With advanced AMD Radeon HD graphics processors across the line, iMac performs even better than before — up to three times better, in fact.1 So you see more frames per second in 3D games, and you can edit HD home videos with more speed and responsiveness than you ever thought possible.

Thunderbolt.
The fastest, most versatile I/O in a desktop.

Ultrafast and ultraflexible, the Thunderbolt port features two 10-Gbps data channels for data transfer that’s up to 12 times faster than FireWire 800 and up to 20 times faster than USB 2.0. And it offers unprecedented expansion capabilities for a new generation of high-performance peripherals. The new 27-inch iMac gives you not just one but two Thunderbolt ports. So in an instant, iMac can go from a family computer to a filmmaker’s dream machine.

The new FaceTime HD camera.
The better to see you with.

Get more of your friends in the picture with crisp, widescreen HD video. The new FaceTime HD camera lets you make FaceTime video calls in 720p resolution. The picture is so clear, it will look and feel almost like you’re in the same room. Make HD calls from one new iMac to another or to a new MacBook Pro. You can also make video calls to other Intel-based Mac computers, iPad 2, iPhone 4, or the latest iPod touch.3

The new widescreen format lets more of your friends in on the fun.
Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad. Multi-Touch by choice.

Now you can choose the perfect cord-free setup. When you buy your new iMac from the Apple Online Store, you have the option to swap Magic Mouse for Magic Trackpad at no extra cost. With Magic Mouse, you can perform simple gestures across its smooth, seamless top shell.

Scroll in any direction with one finger, swipe through web pages and photos with two, and click and double-click anywhere. For full gesture support, opt for Magic Trackpad. Made with a touch-friendly all-glass surface, Magic Trackpad is the largest Multi-Touch trackpad made by Apple. So there’s plenty of room for scrolling, swiping, pinching, rotating, and then some.

REVIEW >> La Sardina Lomo Cameras Look Like Tin Cans

While some photographers brag about the megapixels in their DSLR cameras, others took a different rought by reviving an alternative school of photography called Lomography, which uses a specialized camera with fisheye or pinhole lens and an unadjustable 1/100 shutter speed. It is probably because of the vintage looks of Lomo photographs why its new cameras often have that vintage design.

Thankfully a new batch of Lomo cameras decide to ditch the old school to come up with quirky designs. The La Sardina series are made to look like tin cans commonly used for sardines. These plastic cameras feature a 22-millimeter plastic fisheye lens, the usual 1/100 shutter, and bulb settings that can be adjusted into three different levels of intensity. The design of clip-on flash attachment appears like the light bulb seen in old cameras; it even comes with a set of gels in four colors.

La Sardina uses a 135mm film and comes in four different designs, two of which can be sold with flash. The basic set costs $59, while the complete bundle is sold for $100. Head on to Lomography.com to see the rest of the tin-can designs.

NGR: Panasonic Revives Sanyo’s Xacti Camcorders

Panasonic Camcorders

When Panasonic acquired rival company Sanyo last year, everybody thought it would be the last time we would hear from the latter. Apparently, that is not the case as Panasonic revived Sanyo’s Xacti pistol-grip camcorders with three new models, only this time with its own brand on them.

One of the new Panasonic camcorders, the HX-WA10, was previously released by Sanyo last year and now comes with upgraded specs. Formerly called Xacti DMX-CA100/ VPC-CA100, this waterproof 1080p camcorder now has a 16-megapixel sensor. Meanwhile, the HX-DC15 and the HX-DC1 can shoot 1080p video clips, with the former providing 16GB internal memory and 16-megapixel sensor, while the latter can take 14.4-megapixel photos.

There is no mention whether these new Panasonic pistol-grip camcorders would be available outside Japan.

NGR: Hasselblad H4D 200MS Camera Captures 200MP Images

Hasselblad has recently introduced a new camera that can capture images at a stunning 200MP resolution. This may make those compact digital camera sound puny and small in the process. The comparison may not serve right with the new Hasselblad H4D 200MS Camera.

The new Hasselblad H4D 200MS Digital Camera is able to capture and create 200MP resolution images using the camera’s 50MP sensor. This is possible through the multi-shot technology that the digital camera uses to come up with a 200MP, 600MB image. It does so by taking six images of the same object and different minute angles and then stitch them together into a 200MP image. It takes around 30 seconds for the Hasselblad H4D 200MS Camera to do this.

Other features of this camera also include a 50-800 ISO range, automatic Digital Lens Correction, and also the option to take normal shot 50MP images as a normal camera. With such incredible features, the Hasselblad H4D 200MS Camera does not come cheap by any means. It is available at Hasselblad for a whopping US$45,000. That might be a price tag that only the most serious of professional photographers might be willing to pay.

Although the exterior of the camera is quite subtle on its Disney-esque design, which is a good thing, this Lumix camera is equipped with Mickey Mouse on-and-off screens, icons, and photo frames.

The Lumix Disney camera will hit Japanese retail on June 10 for about US$370. We doubt this will reach stateside, but expect this to become available on specialized online stores that offer Japanese gadgets to buyers outside the Land of the Rising Sun.

Polaroid GL10 Instant Mobile Printer Near Shipping

Back at CES, Polaroid unveiled two gadgets with the help of Lady Gaga: the GL30 camera and the GL10 printer that can be connected to a computer and smartphone and produces 3-by- full-color prints in less than a minute. We have yet to see when the GL30 will become available, but the printer is definitely nearing its shipping date.

The Polaroid Grey Label GL10 instant mobile printer provides the convenience of digital images while keeping with the original Polaroid instant experience. This 15-ounce printer connects to smartphones by Bluetooth and from most digital cameras, PCs, and Macs with a USB cable. It produces prints without the need of ink cartridges or ribbons, thanks to its Zink ink-free technology.

The printer costs US$169 and can now be pre-ordered. According to Polaroid’s online store, this gadget will be shipped in June.
