Stress Relief from Your Smartphone

By Dr. Perry Bosmajian, National Center for Telehealth & Technology

Dr. Perry Bosmajian is a psychologist and project lead for the Breathe2Relax mobile application.

In the growing mobile application marketplace, one of the most promising and rapidly expanding areas is health care and wellness. Here at the National Center for Telehealth & Technology (T2), we design and build high-value mobile applications for the benefit of service members and their families.

Our newest mobile app, Breathe2Relax, is of particular value to people who may be experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder, providing easily accessible relief for stress and anxiety. Breathe2Relax is a diaphragmatic breathing trainer that uses a smartphone’s interactive learning capabilities to teach deep-breathing exercises through video instruction and interactive demonstrations. It’s simple and effective for controlling stress when used either as a stand-alone tool, or in association with face-to-face psychological health care.

Diaphragmatic breathing (belly-breathing) has widely-known benefits for reducing stress, tension and anxiety by calming the “fight or flight” response. From the first time you launch Breathe2Relax, you can immediately begin the breathing exercise and track its beneficial effects through a simple stress results scale. You can easily customize your Breathe2Relax experience, using the app’s preference settings to select breath duration and number of cycles, as well as choice of music and background images.

One of the most interesting parts of Breathe2Relax is the “Body Scanner” feature that allows you to review an image of the human body to learn the effects of stress on its various systems. In understanding the negative and often unseen consequences of stress, users may be more motivated to use the app on a daily basis to develop a beneficial stress relief “habit.”

Breathe2Relax is a free mobile app available now for the iPhone and iPad through iTunes and is scheduled for release for Android devices in late July. For more information about Breathe2Relax and other available apps, visit t2health.org/apps.

HTC Flyer: tablet with a stylus

The Flyer is an HTC Android-based tablet that accepts input via a special pen. We see how that works.

Stand out in tablet country is not obvious. The horde Android 3.0 tablets in the coming weeks and months will be released, is technical and software in much the same lines. Their only goal is to post a resilient Apple iPad.

HTC takes a different approach. Earlier this year announced at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, somewhat surprisingly July 1 inch tablet, equipped with Android 2.3.3 and, yes, pen input. HTC hopes to a very specific audience to tap into: those who are looking for a convenient tablet that you can use as a digital notepad. Mission accomplished?

Capacitive stylus
The advantage of a stylus is that you can draw things more precise and indicate. Such pins have been around for years and are generally only useful on a resistive screen. Because you enough pressure, the touch screen registers. A capacitive screen - like that of the Flyer - responds only to touch with a change in voltage, for example through human skin.

HTC has developed a special pen that works on a capacitive screen. The 11.5-inch pin only requires one AAAA batterijtje to do its thing.

Oddly, the flyer does not replace the pen-touch control of Android. You can start with no applications, menu items, select them, and even the virtual keyboard control. Once you place the pen on the touch screen, the penfunctie activated.

Depending on the application that is then opened, different scenarios unfold. In most cases, simply made a screenshot which you then make your comments, and then stored in an album (see screenshots below). Nice, but the writing surface so it will be limited to what you see on the screen.

Nokia E7: last major step for Symbian

Nokia E7 last major step for Symbian

Nokia seems to be a bit on the decline. The E7 Finns want to show that they are still able to launch a business toptoestel.

While this is not officially named Communicator E7 bears, he is fully indebted to these legendary workhorses of Nokia.

The trick with the slide out keyboard is obviously not as unique as when Nokia first with a Communicator came up in 2000. Brands like HTC, LG and Samsung have also written such phones. Consider the example Z Desire. How Nokia is still different?

For starters, the E7 a relatively long device (12.4 cm), making the backlit keyboard is wider than comparable smartphones. This makes typing comfortable, although the top row of keys for someone with thicker fingers a little difficult to reach. Moreover, as is typical for all the smartphone of this type.

Strong-bodied
The finish is really nothing to criticize. In itself surprised me, because the E family of Nokia has always been characterized by an excellent build quality. E7 does not come to down: the housing is very sturdy and the hinge mechanism of the tilting screen seems very durable and sturdy. Important because such joints are often a weak point. This proves that Nokia phone, despite all the problems in other areas, still capable of top-level hardware to put down.

The solid feeling is reflected in an weight (176 grams) that is higher than average for a smartphone with a touchscreen. Everything has a price, and in this case, those few extra grammes what you pay for the features of the E7 possible. Still looks the E7 is not heavy, thanks to the design with rounded corners.

Resolution
The full keyboard is designed for messaging and other times when you want to enter some text. The rest of the time to use this Nokia folded state and control it via your 4-inch AMOLED touch screen.

Beautiful colors, that's the first thing you think when you see the screen light up the E7. Icons and backgrounds jump off, and the screen remains relatively easy to read in direct sunlight.

Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Pocket Guide Mobile Application Now Available

From Department of Defense Public Affairs

WASHINGTON (NNS) -- The Department of Defense announced June 7 that it has released a new mobile application for health care professionals, the Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Pocket Guide.

This application, developed by the National Center for Telehealth and Technology (T2), gives providers a comprehensive, quick reference that includes clinical practice guidelines for assessing and treating service members and veterans who have sustained a mild traumatic brain injury, commonly referred to as a concussion.

"This new tool is about providing clinicians with quick and convenient access to clinical guidelines for concussion care. It not only allows the clinician to provide evidenced-based care but maximizes time spent with the patient," said Katherine Helmick, deputy director for traumatic brain injury.

The mobile application is free and available for download on Android smart phones at https://market.android.com/details?id=org.t2health.mtbi. Hard copies of the pocket guide can be ordered by contacting the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center at info@dvbic.org or 1-800-870-9244.

News : BlackBerry 9900 confirmed as delayed

As eager as we are to see new BlackBerry devices, such as the BlackBerry 9900, release, it is not going to happen until September. Unfortunately, RIM is encountering problems getting the BlackBerry 9900 out the door. We do not know what exactly the problem is. But we’re lead to believe that it’s not only one major problem but multiple; perhaps something to do with the supply of parts.

We’ve also heard rumors that RIM might release one more non-QNX version of the OS prior to the release of what is now being called the platform unified version of the OS. I would hate to see that happen… Getting us all excited for OS 7 and now they aren’t releasing it yet!?

Hopefully, the delay of the BlackBerry 9900 will not move the release date of other devices, like the BlackBerry 9930 or the Torch 2, to later dates. But of all things, I just wish that RIM would release the 9900 before the iPhone 5 gets out. Or else, it will push RIM further back in the bandwagon.

Mobile Applications for Mental Health

Posted by Dr. Julia E. Hoffman, National Center for Telehealth & Technology

As has happened in every era, service members are returning from deployments with combat wounds that affect their mental and physical health. The impact of these problems goes far beyond the service members themselves. Deployment-related mental, behavioral and physical health problems can lead to challenges in military families and communities that last for months or even years. The good news is that there are a variety of treatments that work for post-deployment challenges, and these effective treatments are offered across the Departments of Defense (DoD) and Veterans Affairs (VA) treatment facilities.

However, many service members and families who need treatment will never seek care for a number of reasons like logistical problems getting to treatment because of location, transportation options, work schedules, etc. Others fear the negative perception of seeking help for psychological health concerns as a sign of weakness, and some don’t even realize that treatment would be helpful because they’re trained that reintegration stress is normal.

At National Center for Telehealth & Technology (T2) we’ve been working on solutions to the problem of getting care to service members where and when they need it most. Our focus is on using technology in innovative ways to address concerns such as post-traumatic stress, depression, or traumatic brain injuries. One way we’ve found is through the use of mobile phone applications for mental health, like PTSD Coach and T2 Mood Tracker. Most people who carry smart phones have them within reach and turned on at all times, so the goal of developing these apps is to provide education, skills training, self-assessment and support to service members immediately via their mobile phone.

Mobile Apps Available:

■PTSD Coach: T2 collaborated with the VA’s National Center for PTSD to create PTSD Coach. This mobile app provides users with information on post-traumatic stress disorder, a self-assessment, support resources and tools to help manage stress symptoms. Tools based on evidence-based treatment range from relaxation skills and positive self-talk to anger management and other common self-help strategies. You can customize tools based on your preferences and can integrate your own contacts, photos and music. Download the app for free from iTunes App Store. A version for Android users is expected to be available later this Spring. For more on this mobile app, click here.
■T2 Mood Tracker: This self-assessment app monitors various aspects of your mood over time. Users select what areas they would like to track, and then use simple graphical scales to indicate how they feel. You can also add your own scales to monitor problems that are completely individualized, and enter notes about what’s going on in your environment to help explain mood changes. Download the app for free from iTunes App Store or from Android. For more on this mobile app, click here.

If you’re not sure if treatment is necessary, use these apps to anonymously check your well-being, and then seek routine care if necessary. Even if you’re already in treatment, these apps provide ways to measure stress and offer coping strategies between sessions—when real life happens.

More mobile apps are coming out for service members, veterans, families and providers—stay tuned for Breathe2Relax!

For additional information and resources, visit the DCoE Mental Health Awareness Month page. Learn more about T2 at t2health.org.

How To Install Netflix On Most Android Devices

Netflix previously all but ignored Android, leaving users confused and annoyed by the lack of love. All that changed yesterday when the app dropped on the Nexus S and several HTC devices. But that’s the catch. Only a select few devices currently support the streaming service, so the fun is only for those rocking the HTC Incredible, HTC Nexus One, HTC Evo 4G, HTC G2, and Samsung Nexus S — unless you’re comfortable following a few lines of instructions!
First off, back up your device. This could brick your device. Please do not proceed if that scares you. Also, your phone must be rooted. Check out the xda-dev wiki for rooting instructions for nearly every Android device. The following process is sort of hit or miss right now. Among other phones, it reportedly doesn’t work on the HTC Thunderbolt for some reason but it’s worth trying if you must have Netflix up and running on your Android device before the complete rollout.
Got your device rooted now? Good. Let’s begin.
1) Go to Settings > Applications > Check the box next to Unknown sources to allow your phone to install the downloaded Netflix app.
2) Download the Netflix apk from here (Download link has been pulled. Sorry folks, you’re gonna have to Google it.) We’re going to try to install it without any line coding first as it seems to install fine depending on custom ROMs. Email this link to yourself and then download it from the device itself. (or download it on your PC, transfer to your microSD card and install from there) Once it’s downloaded, click the Completed Download notification and then install the app. Did it work? If so, enjoy. If not, continue to step 3.
3) Download ES File Explorer
4) In ES File Explorer go to Settings > Root Settings and check both boxes on that screen
5) Go to /system/ and copy/paste build.prop to /sdcard/ as a backup
6) Go back to /system/ and open and edit the file build.prop
7) Trick the Android install to thinking you have the Nexus S by changing the follow lines:
  • ro.product.model=Nexus S
  • ro.product.manufacturer=samsung
8) Reboot the phone
9) Download and install the Netflix apk from here if you haven’t already
10) Profit!
I totally apologize if this doesn’t work on your Android device. Some users can’t get it to work no matter what so YMMV. Of course you could always wait until the Netflix app officially hits all Android devices. That’s bound to happen eventually. At least I hope. See this Reddit thread for more troubleshooting.

National Resource Directory Goes Mobile

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, April 25, 2011 – An easy-to-navigate version of the National Resource Directory website -- which connects wounded warriors, service members, veterans and families with those who support them -- now is available for mobile phones.

With more than 3,000 new users each day searching for information on the site, it makes sense to have a mobile version, said John R. Campbell, deputy assistant secretary of defense for wounded warrior care and transition.

In a recent interview with American Forces Press Service and the Pentagon Channel, Campbell explained that developing the mobile version of the site was an important step in reaching out to younger generations of wounded warriors, service members transitioning out of the military, and their families.

“They are looking for more efficient ways to gather information, and with this explosion of applications on smartphones, it was kind of a no-brainer that we needed to put a mobile version out there,” Campbell said. “Everything we’re trying to do now is geared toward younger servicemen and women applying digital media -– the platform they want to use.”

The website came online in late 2009. Since October, use has grown from around 40,000 each month to 90,000, Campbell said. It is geared toward wounded warriors and transitioning service members, offering nearly 14,000 resources and services to help their move into civilian life.

“The site is being used a lot more than ever, because the information that’s on there is so valuable,” he said.

Users can find tips for writing a resume, techniques to prepare for job interviews, information on veterans’ benefits and compensation and family caregiver support, to name just a few of the services available on the website. Information is searchable by topic audience -- service member, veteran, family member or service provider -- and location.

Users also can sign up for online webinars taught by volunteer professionals, Campbell said.

The website “gives our servicemen and women and their families, we think, a tremendous amount of information from local, state, from federal government and other agencies on not-for-profit corporations,” Campbell said. “It really gives them a wonderful way to find information that they need, that they can search for a number of different ways.”

And now, with the launch of the mobile version, users have an easier-to-navigate version of the site in the palm of their hands anywhere they have mobile reception, he said.

“The mobile version is really the same information, [but] if you were to look at the browser on your phone, you’d see what you see on your [computer] screen,” Campbell said. “But you would only see a small part of it, because the screen is much smaller [on a mobile device].”

The mobile version is not a separate application, Campbell stressed. Users still have to go to the directory website at http://www.nationalresourcedirectory.gov from their mobile device. Once the site loads, they can scroll to the bottom of the page and click the link “NRD mobile” for the mobile version.

The mobile version condenses all of the information on the standard website into five links, and is easier to view and access on a mobile device, Campbell explained.

“This will enable you to get to whatever information -- the 13,000 services that are represented -- with just a couple of clicks,” he said. “Whatever you’re looking for -- information on employment, benefits, information on finances -- whatever you need.”

Information and services on the website are screened and thoroughly reviewed by the Defense Department in collaboration with the departments of Veterans Affairs and Labor, Campbell said.

“This is just one of the number of things in the [Defense] Department to make it easier and more meaningful for wounded warriors and transitioning servicemembers and their families,” he added.

10,000 applications for Windows 7 Phone!

Good news for all those who have a cell phone on Windows 7 Phone! Indeed, the Marketplace Microsoft has just surpassed the 10,000 mark applications. A score more honorable than the threshold of 9,000 applications was taken in early March and that the platform is not necessarily more accessible, at least not for developers ... Suffice to say that the Redmond company seems determined to catch up and even to conquer our hearts.
As I pointed out one of my lovely readers, the big problem of Windows 7 Phone, this technology is imposed by the platform developers. To make their applications, they must encode them into effect. NET, Silverlight or XNA. That said, it may be noted that Microsoft has decided to open its Windows 7 Phone to open source and free (source). A gesture that seems to have been well received by its developer community and is expected to contribute to the development of Marketplace.

In short, going back to the figures, the Marketplace of Windows 7 Phone account so now a little over 10,000 applications. And even if he fails to reach the level of the AppStore (350 000 + applications) or Market (+ 100,000), we note that it resembles more of the BlackBerry App World (+ 20,000). As I said in my previous article on the subject, the gap is indeed trying to reduce. At the current rate things are going, Microsoft is expected soon to catch up and then surpass RIM.
And the recent agreement between Microsoft and Nokia should further improve the positioning of the Marketplace on the market and allow Windows 7 Phone better win against its competitors. In any event, even if it appears that a large part of the officiating developers working on the Marketplace for the firm, it is obviously a good thing and we can even say it all more remarkable that Windows 7 Phone came on late.

Finally, remember to finish the next major update of Windows 7 Phone should foster the emergence of applications even more original and mature than what can currently be found on the Marketplace. For indeed, thanks to the latter, the mobile branded platform of the firm can take advantage of ... KINECTS. Yes, the same KINECTS which has sold 10 million copies and was preparing to return soon in the Guinness Book of Records
