Virgin Mobile and Motorola rev up prepaid smart phones

http://www.fox8live.com/media/lib/137/a/5/a/a5ada4d9-dbd2-4b00-a88b-f6cbb665e3b7/Story.jpgVirgin Mobile USA recently added the Motorola TRIUMPH to its Android-powered smart phone lineup. Its release has been highly anticipated, largely because the handset offers top-of-the-line smart phone features with unlimited data, no-contract service plans.

As I noted here back in December, a prepaid plan is attractive for many consumers in today's economy. The usual trade-off, however, is a less-than-exciting choice of handsets. Not so with Virgin Mobile's latest offering.

For $299.99, the TRIUMPH provides a 1GHz processor, 4.1-inch touchscreen, rear-facing 5MP camera, front-facing VGA camera for video chat, and 720p HD camcorder with HDMI output (HDMI cable sold separately).

The TRIUMPH doesn't represent the bleeding edge of Android technology, but you get an enjoyable Android experience complete with access to corporate email, social media sites, the full suite of Google services, and the Android Market for access to more than 200,000 useful applications, widgets and games.

The device is also the first handset to come preloaded with the Virgin Mobile Live 2.0, a social networking music application you can use to access the Virgin Mobile branded music stream, hosted by DJ Abbey Braden. The app also provides free access to live music performance videos and "check in" features at special events. Status updates made using the app also sync with Facebook and Twitter.

The TRIUMPH is also eligible for the new Virgin Mobile Beyond Talk plan structure:
  • $35 per month: Unlimited text, email, and data; 300 anytime voice minutes
  • $45 per month: Unlimited text, email, and data; 1200 anytime voice minutes
  • $55 per month: Unlimited text, email, and data; Unlimited anytime voice minutes
The 3G phone is also Wi-Fi-capable. Battery talk time is 500 minutes (300 hours standby), and a 2GB MicroSD card (complete with standard size SD card adapter) is included. The device supports MicroSD cards up to 32GB.

CC Solar Observer wind-up/solar/battery-powered emergency radio with AM/FM and Weather Band

Two new list-toppers for hi-tech hurricane readiness
Staying connected during emergencies so you can get the latest information is vitally important. As such, radios capable of being powered by multiple energy sources and mobile Wi-Fi hotspots are fast becoming must-haves for anyone living in coastal areas vulnerable to tropical storms.

The CC Solar Observer by C. Crane is an emergency radio designed to provide superb AM reception, which many of us discovered was important during Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, Gustav and Ike, plus it charges mobile phones (adapters for popular models included) and has a built-in 3-LED flashlight.

The unit can be operated using a built-in solar panel (in conjunction with an onboard rechargeable battery), 3-AA alkaline batteries, or a built-in hand crank. The company says the radio will play for about the same number of hours it is exposed to bright sun. At night, you can crank the handle moderately for about 10 minutes for one hour of radio play.

The radio also receives FM stations and Weather band, and a stereo headphone jack is provided for private listening. The compact device (7.25" W x 5.5" H x 2" D) has a nice-sounding 2-inch speaker, weighs only one pound, and sells for $44.95. For more information, visit CCrane.com.

Verizon's 4G LTE MiFi 4510L mobile hotspot lets you conduct business where and when it happens, securely and easily, using multiple computers or devices.

Thanks to Verizon's 4G LTE network (currently available in greater New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and other major metropolitan areas), the battery-powered unit is capable of delivering download speeds of 5–12 Mbps and upload speeds of 2–5 Mbps.

The device can provide Internet access for up to 5 Wi–Fi enabled devices at one time, which makes it perfect for traveling -- a simple, convenient way to provide connectivity for a family in a minivan or travelers in a hotel.
The pocket-sized unit (3.74" H x 2.36"W x 0.53" D) weighs only 3 oz. Battery life is up to 5 hrs. (auto shutoff with 30–minute timer on by default), and the unit is backwardly compatible with Verizon's 3G network (CDMA 1xEV–DO Rev.A/Rev.0).

The full retail price is $269.99, but that currently drops to $99.99 with a new, two-year broadband data service agreement (subject to an early termination fee). Furthermore, Verizon is also offering a additional $70 promotional discount, which brings the price down to $29.99.

If you would rather avoid a service contract, another option is to pay the full retail price for the device and elect a monthly, pay-as-you-go data plan. The rates and data caps are as follows:
DurationData AmountMonthly Access
Day100MB$15
Week300MB$30
Month1GB$50
Month5GB$80
