New Motorola devices leaked in images

New Motorola devices leaked in images

The folks over at PocketNow recently stumbled upon some images of new Motorola products that were somehow leaked on its website redesign and it shows us a glimpse of what the company is up to. Judging by the photographs, we'll be seeing a follow up to the Xoom, tentatively called Xoom 2, two new thin-looking Android handsets nicknamed Slimline and Zaha, and a watch phone (!!) dubbed Tracy XL. There is also a screenshot of the Motorola Targa, along with a phone called Pearl. While no specs were leaked, these leaked screenshots do help pique our interest in whatever Motorola's coming up with.

IPC releases PCB industry reults for April 2011

BANNOCKBURN, USA: IPC — Association Connecting Electronics Industries announced the April findings from its monthly North American Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Statistical Program.

PCB industry growth rates and book-to-bill ratios announced
Rigid PCB shipments were up 0.8 percent and bookings decreased 6.6 percent in April 2011 from April 2010. Year to date, rigid PCB shipments were up 5.2 percent and bookings declined 8.1 percent.

Compared to the previous month, rigid PCB shipments decreased 15.0 percent and rigid bookings decreased 12.3 percent. The book-to-bill ratio for the North American rigid PCB industry in April 2011 improved slightly to 0.96.

Flexible circuit shipments in April 2011 were up 30.3 percent and bookings increased 7.2 percent compared to April 2010. Year to date, flexible circuit shipments increased 14.3 percent and bookings were up 9.0 percent. Compared to the previous month, flexible circuit shipments decreased 2.4 percent and flex bookings declined 0.8 percent. The North American flexible circuit book-to-bill ratio in April 2011 fell to 0.96.

For rigid PCBs and flexible circuits combined, industry shipments in April 2011 increased 3.0 percent from April 2010, as orders booked decreased 5.6 percent from April 2010. Year to date, combined industry shipments were up 5.9 percent and bookings were down 6.7 percent. Compared to the previous month, combined industry shipments for April 2011 decreased 13.9 percent and bookings decreased 11.5 percent. The combined (rigid and flex) industry book-to-bill ratio in April 2011 inched up to 0.96.

“Growth in North American PCB sales continues to follow normal seasonal patterns and seems to have returned to normal, and the book-to-bill ratio is holding steady at just under parity,” said IPC president and CEO Denny McGuirk. “This suggests the slowdown in sales growth is likely to continue into the third quarter of this year.”

The book-to-bill ratios are calculated by dividing the value of orders booked over the past three months by the value of sales billed during the same period from companies in IPC’s survey sample. A ratio of more than 1.00 suggests that current demand is ahead of supply, which is a positive indicator for sales growth over the next two to three months.

Book-to-bill ratios and growth rates for rigid PCBs and flexible circuits combined are heavily affected by the rigid PCB segment. Rigid PCBs represent an estimated 89 percent of the current PCB industry in North America, according to IPC’s World PCB Production Report.

Role of domestic production
IPC’s monthly survey of the North American PCB industry tracks bookings and shipments from US and Canadian facilities, which provide indicators of regional demand. These numbers do not measure US and Canadian PCB production.

To track regional production trends, IPC asks survey participants for the percent of their reported shipments that were produced domestically (i.e., in the USA or Canada). In April 2011, 81 percent of total PCB shipments reported were domestically produced.

Domestic production accounted for 79 percent of rigid PCB and 87 percent of flexible circuit shipments in April by IPC’s survey participants. These numbers are significantly affected by the mix of companies in IPC’s survey sample, which change slightly in January, but are kept constant through the remainder of the year.

Bare circuits vs. assembly
Flexible circuit sales typically include value-added services such as assembly, in addition to the bare flex circuits. In April, the flexible circuit manufacturers in IPC’s survey sample indicated that bare circuits accounted for about 52 percent of their shipment value reported for the month.

Assembly and other services make up a large and growing segment of flexible circuit producers’ businesses. This figure is also sensitive to changes in the survey sample, which may occur at the beginning of each calendar year.

Interpreting the data
Year-on-year and year-to-date growth rates provide the most meaningful view of industry growth. Month-to-month comparisons should be made with caution as they may reflect cyclical effects. Because bookings tend to be more volatile than shipments, changes in the book-to-bill ratios from month to month may not be significant unless a trend of more than three consecutive months is apparent.

It is also important to consider changes in bookings and shipments to understand what is driving changes in the book-to-bill ratio.

iCloud is Coming!

iCloud.jpg
Every June for the last few years, Apple has announced the latest iPhone.  This year, that won't be the case as it looks like the iPhone 5 announcement won't come until late summer at the earliest.
So... in order to stop speculation on next weeks announcement at the World Wide Developers Conference, Apple did something today that they don't normally do... namely the told, in advance, what one of the big announcements will be.
It's iCloud, Apple's online music repository.  About 2 years ago, Apple bought online music service LaLa and promptly shut it down.  Since then there has been speculation about a cloud type service for iTunes customers.  Now we've already seen a service like that from Amazon and one has been rumored by Google.
Apple is mum on exactly what the service will do, preferring instead to let people speculate and let the drama build until next week.  Knowing Jobs & company, it will be a better service than what Amazon is already offering (Apple hates to be a me to company), so I'm intrigued to see what this means for my music...

ASUS Eee PC 1005HA-PU1X-BK 10.1-Inch Black Netbook Review

Ah, the granddaddy of netbooks, the Eee PC. Asus were the pioneer of this small form factor portable computer. Thankfully the 7inch screens from the first models have had a few upgrades since then. This newer 10 inch size, gives a little more to those who don’t have teeny-weeny hands and don’t want to wear binoculars to see tiny text on screen.

Apart from the awful, almost unpronounceable name, this computer provides a huge range of features, in a package that is small enough to drag around anywhere and with a battery life long enough to last for an entire day.

Here’s some of the main features:

Intel Atom CPU1GB memory160GB hard drive10 inch screen with 1024 x 768 resolutionBuilt-in webcam and microphoneLAN, Wifi and Bluetooth2.81 lbs

The styling is good. So no childish looks from this mini-performer. The screen provides enough size for webpage viewing, although sometimes requiring left to right scrolling. For desktop use I’d recommend an extra monitor as it’s easier to view. The VGA port will connect to almost any monitor, but some monitors no longer have VGA ports, so check first.

1GB of memory is just right.

160GB hard drive is fine, but I’d prefer a smaller solid state drive instead. There is an extra 10GB of online storage offered, but this strikes me as gimmicky, I would much rather they provided a subscription to one of the big online storage firms. I just don’t know how much to trust their in-house offering as Asus are a hardware company.

Networking is a critical component for netbooks that, by their very name, are designed to be online. Fast Ethernet is the staple of office networks, and Wifi 802.11n allows faster wireless speeds on networks that support it. Bluetooth is also included and will connect to Bluetooth microphones and stereo headphones.

The Asus Eee PC just can’t really go very wrong. The important part is that there are no important features missing. The blue Samsung netbook is $50 cheaper than this computer, but has less battery life, so weight up what is most important to you.

Pros:

CompactCheap enoughLightStandard features

Cons:

Little more expensive than some other similar netbooksGimmicky online storageTags: Asus, compact, Eee PC, Gaming Computer Reviews, Laptop and Notebook Computer Reviews, lightweight, netbook, notebook computer reviews, ultra-portable
