REVIEW >> GRilli3D brings 3D to the iDevice

Considering the amount of mobile phones with glasses-free 3D displays being released recently, I’m sure that eventually iDevices will have them. This is assuming that this glasses-free 3D screens aren’t some passing fad.

If you want that 3D effect on your iPhone and iPad now, you can get it with GRilli. I recently saw it work on several different devices, and I was pretty impressed.

It works using this lined decal on the screen on the iDevice that can be easily printed on adhesive transparent sheets. Somehow, putting this thing on can trick the eye into seeing stereoscopic 3D, and it is apparently best in landscape mode.

If you have seen a 3D postcard, then you have seen the effect of the GRilli in a non-digital way. It probably is the closest thing to glasses-free 3D without altering the basic hardware of the device.

The drawback is that the transparent decal is somewhat tough to put on, and you have to make sure that you are seeing “parallel rainbows”.

GRilli is available for the iPod and iPhone for about $14.99, and the $29.99 for the iPad. If it is successful, then I am certain you will be seeing GRill3D on all sorts of devices like TV sets and other brands of tablets of cellphones.

REVIEW >> The Avenger Adapter for the Xbox 360

I’m sure that you are probably looking at this Xbox 360 controller and wondering what kind of cybernetic job was done on it.

This is the Avenger, and it has nothing to do with Marvel’s super-hero team or that really interesting British spy show that was done in the 1960s. The Avenger is designed to speed up the performance of the XBox 360 gamer.

It does so by electronically stimulating the knuckles so the gamer becomes as fast as The Six Million Dollar Man. Just kidding. Find out how it really works after the jump.

It is as simple as strapping it to the controller, and then the user needs to re-learn how to game. Becoming a champion on the Avenger is all about how not to hit the X, Y, and B keys with your thumbs.

Instead, you need to use the levers with the back of your fingers to trigger the buttons. The advantage is that one doesn’t have to switch their thumb from the Right Stick to those pesky buttons. You still have to hit the A button with your right thumb, but you save time by saving your thumb from excess work. This little bit of saved time increases your reaction time, and results in a better game.

See how it works now? You should be able to get it from the official Avenger site for about $49.99.

REVIEW >> Razer’s new gaming keyboard is made for new Star Wars: The Old Republic game

I suppose that their will always be Star Wars games just like there will always be new Star Wars stories, and a soon-to-be released one is Star Wars: The Old Republic.

When the game gets released from Bioware and LucasArts, Razer will release this Star Wars gaming keyboard. It has a full color LCD track-panel which highly sensitive multi-touch support, perfect for making macros.

Speaking of macros, it also has some tactile keys above the LCD track-panel, just so you can make your move faster. Those keys can somehow change pictures, which is going to make this space-age combat a lot more nifty.

Yeah, I could have written that much better, but just to let you know, the keyboard has a special lighting feature. It can be blue for the Republic, red for the Sith Empire, or green like a lightsaber, so you can customize your keyboard.

I think it is interesting that Razer is putting out this gaming keyboard for this MMO game, and I am wondering if every MMO game is going to have a specially made keyboard. I know that SteelSeries puts out a bunch of them, and I’m wondering why these games just don’t get bundled together with these keyboards.

This one for The Old Republic is the coolest that I have seen, but there is no word on when it will come out, which is the same for the game. Here’s the official site if you are interested.

REVIEW >> The easy2pick Wireless Luggage Finder

Usually, when I travel, I always carry-on. However, with the price of airport luggage check-in, I have found that the only time that I check-in is when the airline will do it for free during that critical moment when I get on the plane.

The Wireless Luggage Finder is designed to combat the problem of finding your bag at the baggage claim. All you need to do is clip that credit card sized thing and turn it on. After your flight, you turn on the round keychain that you see there, and it will sound when your suitcase is within 90 feet. So when the suitcase rolls onto the luggage carousel, you will hear a beeping sound on the keys.

It has an individual code so there is no mistaken identity. You can also use this device as a way to find your keys. In that case, just take that credit card device and turn it on. Assuming the keychain is on, then the beep should give away the position of your keys.

Personally, I would have made this device so that the credit card shaped device will beep, as that would give away the position of my luggage. However, that would defeat the purpose of using it as a key-finder. I guess you have to sacrifice one for the other.

Anyway, you should be able to pick it up at the X-treme Geek site for about $24.95.

Yutong Bus uses Nokia Siemens Networks’ telematics applications

Based on cost efficient Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model

Nokia Siemens Networks has signed a contract with Yutong Bus company Ltd, to provide a machine to machine (M2M) service platform and develop various telematics applications. Telematics applications enable exclusive services such as emergency response, fleet management and remote diagnostics for Yutong buses leading to transport services.

The telematics applications aim to provide a number of benefits via software as a service (SaaS) business model. For example, one of the applications aims to allow Yutong Bus monitoring center to analyze vehicles remotely and subsequently arrange for a mechanic to repair the vehicle, automatically providing the correct replacement parts. A further application will conduct remote analysis of vehicle data to proactively detect and fix issues before they impact bus efficiency or performance. Telematics will also enable automatic emergency response, allowing the driver to call for help with the single push of a button inside the vehicle, in case of an emergency. As a result, customer service center can be alerted with GPS coordinates and emergency services can automatically be dispatched.

For fleet management, telematics applications can allow service centers to track the routes taken by each bus and optimize them. In addition, Nokia Siemens Networks’ telematics SaaS also aims to improve Yutong’s navigation system. In the new, assisted navigation service, customer service representatives can feed destinations remotely into buses and help to avoid congestion or road closures, enabling a smooth and more convenient journey.

All these applications will be built on Nokia Siemens Networks’ M2M service management platform. The company will also offer its consulting and system integration services.

"While the automobile industry has a lot to gain from the adoption of telematics, the high investment in hardware infrastructure and software licenses have so far been a big deterrent,” said Wang Shengjun, chief information officer, Yutong Bus. “The telematics applications via a service model are ideal for keeping initial investments and risks low while at the same time offering us an opportunity to greatly improve customer experience. The applications that Nokia Siemens Networks is developing for us will go a long way in helping us to increase our production and enter new segments such as trucking.".

"This is a breakthrough deal since it marks our entry into a very promising market segment of M2M,” added Markus Borchert, head of customer operations of the Greater China region at Nokia Siemens Networks. “It highlights our capabilities in offering a comprehensive M2M solution suite for the automotive industry coupled with opening up new, potential opportunities in the enterprise segment."

LG’S STYLISH HOM-BOT RECOGNIZED FOR INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY AND GREAT DESIGN

Smart Vacuum Cleaning Robot Named Finalist in IERA and Winner of Red Dot

LG Electronics’ (LG) HOM-BOT Smart Vacuum Cleaning Robot was recognized as a finalist at the 7th Annual Invention and Entrepreneurship Award in Robotics and Automation (IERA). Between the IERA recognition and a red dot design award, the HOM-BOT is the only robotic cleaner in the world to be honored by both prestigious organizations.

A co-sponsored activity between the International Federation of Robotics and the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society, the purpose of the IERA award is to highlight and honor the achievements of inventors with value creating ideas and entrepreneurs who propel those ideas into world-class products. The IERA underlines the determination of both the International Federation of Robotics and the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society to promote stronger collaboration between robotics science and the robotics industry.

“We’re honored by this recognition because the HOM-BOT is all about using technology to make housework less inconvenient,” said Young-ha Lee, President and CEO of LG Electronics Home Appliance Company. “The right balance of technology and functionality is what makes LG products unique and HOM-BOT is a shining example.”

The HOM-BOT boasts an impressive array of cutting-edge features. The Dual Eye Camera Sensor is the first such device to be utilized in a vacuum cleaner and uses one lens on the top fascia and one on the bottom to provide more comprehensive visual data. The upper camera is also tasked with simultaneously mapping and remembering floor plans, while the lower camera is equipped with an Optical Flow Sensor that captures a myriad of surface images per second, providing distance information and plotting paths for the HOM-BOT to follow.

Ultrasonic and infrared sensors identify obstacles and work to prevent the redundant bump-and-retreat action. Failsafe systems are built in, so in the event that the HOMBOT does run into an obstacle, the accelerometer and gyro sensor allow the cleaner to react accordingly. The result of this compilation of sensors and programming is a vacuum that avoids the pitfalls rival systems often suffer from. Moreover, the HOM-BOT is pleasingly quiet, with noise levels reduced to just 60dB.

In addition to its technological achievement, HOM-BOT was named a winner of a red dot design award, one of the most prestigious in the industry. Since 1955, the Essen Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen has annually selected outstanding design quality and paid official tribute to the award-winning products in an exhibition. The 2011 competition received 4,433 products from 1,700 companies, entered from 60 different countries. The official award ceremony will be held in Essen, Germany on July 4.

The plans of vendors ARM-laptops

A number of manufacturers of computer equipment, such as Samsung Electronics, Toshiba, Acer and Asustek Computer, are developing laptops that will be based on processors with ARM-architecture. With the first commercial samples may occur before the end of this year. It is worth noting that this is not the first attempt to bring such devices to market. Two years ago, Toshiba and Lenovo have already reported models on the market of portable computers, which were based on ARM-chip and runs on Android. Then they were called smartbooks, but because of various shortcomings and poor performance, they found no particular demand and to continue the series followed. Over the past two years, ARM-processors have advanced significantly in its development, when in 2009 they were only single core, it is now already offers quad-core solutions. Also changed the available memory and Android operating system itself has become far more sophisticated software. So the producers thought that might try to market a very competitive offering of ARM-processor and the classical form factor notebook. On their side will be relatively low cost, with performance comparable to conventional netbooks, as well as more long battery life. We already know that ASUS has very specific plans to release this year, 13-inch laptop on the platform from Nvidia and the operating system Android. When exactly will follow the proposals of other companies - not known, but reported that the solutions for ARM-notebooks may be offered in addition to Nvidia and more companies Qualocmm and Texas Instruments. Their families Snapdragon processors and OMAP quite correspond to the required level of performance, and will produce a device costing less than $ 300.

REVIEW >> The Case-mate iPhone Case Costs $300; Why?

Is the recession not affecting you and have $300 to spend on an iPhone 4 case? Then Case-mate is for you! But wait, why does it cost that much?

Apparently, using titanium as the main material could be costly, even for an iPhone 4 case. That metal is known for its strength, light weight, and anti-corrosive features. I should know; I have a titanium frying pan that also doubles as a wok. That thing has been with us for almost 10 years now.

But then again, for an iPhone 4 case, I think you could be better off with the aircraft aluminum-made Vapor, which is way cheaper. Still absurdly priced at $80, but at least it ain’t $300.

But if you insist, the Case-mate will be up for sale beginning June 27.

For example, you can set it to start recording a voice message as a note, while listening to radio in the headset you can set the LiveKey™ button to identify the song you are listening by using the TrackID application or it can start and stop your fitness application while out exercising. The possibilities are endless! As a developer, you are able to configure your application to make use of the LiveKey™ feature on the LiveSound™ hi-fi headset, as we are releasing code examples and documentation to guide you in this.
The LiveDock™ multimedia station is a smart, new docking station for your phone, which will launch any application you have set in the LiveWare™ manager application. Maybe you want to launch the music player when you dock in the kitchen, or the alarm clock when you dock in the bedroom? LiveDock™ multimedia station is also the first accessory to support ConnectLaunch. This is a new feature in LiveWare™ manager that notifies a preselected Android™ application when an accessory is connected to or detached from a device. Developers will have the ability to configure apps to work with ConnectLaunch, and therefore the LiveDock™ multimedia station. We will also release code examples and documentation for this.

LiveSound™ hi-fi headset and Xperia™ ray.
Introducing LiveSound™ hi-fi headset
The Sony Ericsson LiveSound™ hi-fi headset delivers premium sound, premium design and a smart remote control. Constructed from solid metal housing, it features minute 6mm driver units with powerful neodymium magnets, flat tangle free cables, and an intelligent, full remote with mic. The LiveSound™ hi-fi headset is designed with meticulous precision to captivate your eyes and ears, making it THE Android™ headphones for your Sony Ericsson smartphone.
Adapt your apps for LiveKey™
Along with the LiveSound™ hi-fi headset, we are also releasing the LiveKey™ concept. LiveKey™ is a new feature that extends the capabilities of Android™ phones connected to a LiveKey™ headset and running the latest version of the LiveWare™ manager. When a user presses the LiveKey™ button, it communicates with the LiveKey™ framework. The framework then invokes a LiveKey™ Handler to handle the button press. A LiveKey™ Handler is any application that is developed or adapted to handle LiveKey™ events.
As a developer, you have extensive freedom in how your LiveKey™ Handler interprets and handles LiveKey™ events. As inspiration and examples, when a user presses a LiveKey™ button, a LiveKey™ Handler could perform actions such as these:
Read an SMS message in the headphone’s ear speaker.
Toggle for media playback effects, such as bass boost.
Read the current time in the headphone’s ear speaker.
Start the user’s favourite application.
Send an SMS message as a reply to a incoming phone call.
Trigger a remote camera.
Start a recorder or similar sound-recording device.
The code example for LiveKey™ consists of two projects, one that creates sample LiveKey™ Handlers, and the other that creates various tests of the sample LiveKey™ Handlers. You can download these projects into Eclipse or any other build environment and use them as reference resources. Download the LiveKey™ Handler code example and documentation to learn more.
LiveSound™ and LiveKey™ compatibility
The LiveKey™ feature itself is developed for Android™ phones connected to a LiveKey™ headset and running the latest version of the LiveWare™ manager available on Android™ Market. LiveKey™ is an important element featured in the LiveSound™ hi-fi headset for SonyEricsson phones.
The LiveSound™ hi-fi headset will be fully supported by Xperia™ ray, Xperia™ active, Xperia™ pro, Xperia™ mini and Xperia™ mini pro from launch. Other 2011 Sony Ericsson Xperia™ phones will support LiveSound™ through software updates later this year. Visit www.sonyericsson.com/LiveSound to find out if your phone works with the LiveSound™ hi-fi headset.

LiveDock™ multimedia station and Xperia™ arc.

Introducing the LiveDock™ multimedia station
The Sony Ericsson LiveDock™ multimedia station is an elegant Android dock for smartphones that launches apps. For example, you can get news updates in your kitchen, enjoy your mobile music in your living room, or use LiveDock™ as an alarm clock. Just choose the app you want LiveWare™ manager to launch when you dock your Android phone.
LiveDock™ will also have the possibility to be connected to a USB device such as keyboard, mouse and gamepad if the phone has support for USB OTG. Visit www.sonyericsson.com/LiveDock for detailed information about compatibility.
Adapt your apps for ConnectLaunch
As the LiveDock™ multimedia station is announced, we also introduce the ConnectLaunch concept. ConnectLaunch is a new feature in LiveWare™ manager that notifies a preselected Android™ application when an accessory is connected to or detached from a device.
The notification can be used to launch or stop the application associated with the accessory. For example, ConnectLaunch can be used to start a media player when a pair of Bluetooth™ headphones is wirelessly connected to a device, or to start a clock when a charger is connected to a device through a USB port.
The code example for ConnectLaunch also consists of two projects – one that creates a sample ConnectLaunch Handler, and the other that tests the sample ConnectLaunch Handler. You can download these projects into Eclipse or any other build environment and use them as reference resources. Download the ConnectLaunch Handler code example and documentation to learn more.
LiveDock™ and ConnectLaunch compatibility
The LiveDock™ will work with Android™ phones running the latest version of the LiveWare™ manager, available on Android™ Market. The LiveDock™multimedia station with ConnectLaunch feature will be fully supported in Xperia™ ray, Xperia™ active, Xperia™ pro, Xperia™ mini and Xperia™ mini pro from launch.
Other 2011 Sony Ericsson Xperia™ phones, including Xperia™ neo and Xperia™ arc, will support LiveDock™ through software updates later this year. Visit www.sonyericsson.com/LiveDock for detailed information about compatibility and USB OTG support (phone software dependent).
