Yutong Bus uses Nokia Siemens Networks’ telematics applications

Based on cost efficient Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model

Nokia Siemens Networks has signed a contract with Yutong Bus company Ltd, to provide a machine to machine (M2M) service platform and develop various telematics applications. Telematics applications enable exclusive services such as emergency response, fleet management and remote diagnostics for Yutong buses leading to transport services.

The telematics applications aim to provide a number of benefits via software as a service (SaaS) business model. For example, one of the applications aims to allow Yutong Bus monitoring center to analyze vehicles remotely and subsequently arrange for a mechanic to repair the vehicle, automatically providing the correct replacement parts. A further application will conduct remote analysis of vehicle data to proactively detect and fix issues before they impact bus efficiency or performance. Telematics will also enable automatic emergency response, allowing the driver to call for help with the single push of a button inside the vehicle, in case of an emergency. As a result, customer service center can be alerted with GPS coordinates and emergency services can automatically be dispatched.

For fleet management, telematics applications can allow service centers to track the routes taken by each bus and optimize them. In addition, Nokia Siemens Networks’ telematics SaaS also aims to improve Yutong’s navigation system. In the new, assisted navigation service, customer service representatives can feed destinations remotely into buses and help to avoid congestion or road closures, enabling a smooth and more convenient journey.

All these applications will be built on Nokia Siemens Networks’ M2M service management platform. The company will also offer its consulting and system integration services.

"While the automobile industry has a lot to gain from the adoption of telematics, the high investment in hardware infrastructure and software licenses have so far been a big deterrent,” said Wang Shengjun, chief information officer, Yutong Bus. “The telematics applications via a service model are ideal for keeping initial investments and risks low while at the same time offering us an opportunity to greatly improve customer experience. The applications that Nokia Siemens Networks is developing for us will go a long way in helping us to increase our production and enter new segments such as trucking.".

"This is a breakthrough deal since it marks our entry into a very promising market segment of M2M,” added Markus Borchert, head of customer operations of the Greater China region at Nokia Siemens Networks. “It highlights our capabilities in offering a comprehensive M2M solution suite for the automotive industry coupled with opening up new, potential opportunities in the enterprise segment."

Nokia Siemens Networks adds depth to customer experience management

CEM 2.0 at CommunicAsia 2011 provides new opportunities, competitive edge for operators

Today, 66 percent of operators worldwide cannot access the data in their networks and IT systems to enhance their customers’ service experience*. Nokia Siemens Networks’ expanded customer experience management portfolio, CEM 2.0, helps operators fully utilize this data to improve the customer experience and their business results. Its full capabilities are on show at this week’s CommunicAsia 2011 event in Singapore.

“According to our own detailed study**, four out of ten high-value customers are dissatisfied with their current operators, and likely to switch operators in the next 12-month period,” said Shamir Shoham, head of product management for Nokia Siemens Networks Business Solutions. “To counter this trend, operators are increasingly relying on Nokia Siemens Networks’ approach to customer experience management. The approach helps them make the most of the assets they already own by linking insights about service performance and customer behavior to trigger actions that deliver genuine business impact.”

CEM 2.0 brings together pre-integrated software that interprets and simplifies the millions of data points that can be extracted from a telecoms network and operators’ IT systems. This approach enables real-time insight and action across the entire customer lifecycle and a service provider’s operations. With real-time aggregation and correlation of subscriber, service, network and device data, CEM 2.0 proactively drives real-time actions to improve customer experience and business results for prioritized customer segments. Actions are driven by predefined key performance indicators in areas such as campaigns and promotions, service fulfilment, service quality, payments and customer care.

Nokia Siemens Networks is arguably ahead of its direct competitors in assembling a complete CEM solution,” said Joe McGarvey of Current Analysis***. McGarvey has also recommended that other network equipment providers follow the leading approach of Nokia Siemens Networks.

Nokia Siemens Networks is currently providing its CEM 2.0 software and services to a major regional operator in Asia, who is able to correlate data from many sources and obtain immediate feedback on how poor mobile broadband quality and download problems are impacting customer experience. With these insights, the operator is able to respond proactively to problems, identifying whether they are caused by incorrect device settings or mobile broadband subscription issues, and providing personalized and proactive services to resolve them. This allows the operator to target higher value users and differentiate its services across its 100 million customer base while at the same time improving the efficiency of its operations.

Using Nokia Siemens Networks’ CEM 2.0, another major player is preventing bill shock. The operator is being hailed for its proactive industry response by throttling speeds when customers reach data limits. Customers also receive text message updates on the volume and cost of their data use when travelling. In each case, the operator taps holistic insight from their systems and takes targeted action to reduce data speeds or update subscribers on data costs, rather than charging for excess data.

Finally, tackling existing, complex IT systems and processes, was the starting point for another project with a global operator. The operator used CEM 2.0 to manage its network, services and customer experience. The outcomes of the project, which enabled real-time visibility of customer experience, were increased, proactive problem solving, better informed customer service agents, greater customer satisfaction and lower costs. The project won the operator’s implementation and delivery prize in 2010.

To learn more about these cases and the capabilities of the CEM 2.0 offering, please visit Nokia Siemens Networks’ showcase at the Hibiscus rooms 3612 / 3611 / 3610 / 3710 at the Marina Bay Sands Expo, Singapore from June 21–23.

Nokia Siemens Networks boosts base station power for greater capacity

New radio module provides 40% performance improvement at edge of cell while carriers can be distributed across 60 MHz frequency band range

Nokia Siemens Networks has expanded its Liquid Radio architecture* by launching a new, high power radio module for its Flexi Multiradio Base Station family** at CommunicAsia 2011 in Singapore. The higher output power means that the module offers greater GSM coverage and increased 3G data capacity at the edge of cells, providing an overall 40% increase in performance. This provides operators with the ability to efficiently enhance their network. In addition, the ability of the new radio module to allocate carriers frequencies across a broad 60 MHz range reduces the size of hardware required per base station site allowing more flexibility in deployment.

In mobile networks, the radio module is the part of a base station that amplifies each individual radio signal before broadcasting it from an antenna. Due to its higher output power, the new module improves the signal used to transmit voice or data to a mobile phone user. This directly increases how much useful information the signal can carry or the number of people for whom it can provide a connection.

Nokia Siemens Networks’ all in one radio module can be used for all installation types, such as indoor, outdoor, distributed, mast pole and 6-sector sites***, and it can provide up to 240 watts output power per sector, or provide 80 watts output to each of three sectors. It is also capable of allocating carriers within a 60 MHz range, which is particularly useful for operators with fragmented frequency bands. The module supports any combination of GSM, 3G, LTE or LTE-Advanced technologies in a single unit, significantly further reducing the hardware units a site may need.

"Our new radio module is especially suited for refarming GSM frequency bands for HSPA+ and LTE services and network sharing deployments,” said Thorsten Robrecht, head of Network Systems product management at Nokia Siemens Networks. “Moreover, we are the only vendor to combine the capacity to drive three remote radio heads – or sectors – into a single 25-liter unit, offering a smooth evolution for compact multiradio sites with lower power consumption."

Nokia Siemens Networks’ radio module is also the only three-sector remote radio unit in the industry that can be placed next to an antenna, enabling a light multiradio set-up in limited spaces and sites, which cannot be equipped with traditional base stations.

The first frequency variants of the new radio module – including on the 900, 900 J, 1800 and 2100 frequency bands – will be available for commercial deployment at the beginning of 2012. Further variants will be rolled out during the first half of 2012.

Nokia Siemens Networks, Cisco enable faster channel switching of digital TV, better video quality for operator’s IPTV service

Belgacom, the leading Belgian IPTV service provider, has introduced a new technology enabling almost instantaneous channel switching while improving the image quality of its digital TV service. The technology was provided by Cisco and integrated by Nokia Siemens Networks.

“The main highlight of this deployment is that it’s a world first for a network-friendly implementation of the technology,” said Brook Longdon, head of media and entertainment at Nokia Siemens Networks. “It takes into account the fact that broadband access networks don’t have unlimited bandwidth for fast channel change services. Our technology addresses this constraint allowing Belgacom to use precious bandwidth to broadcast more content."

Belgacom’s digital TV service offered distinctly superior image quality compared to analog, but the digital TV’s channel change speed was slow. In addition to improving the channel switching speed of the digital TV system, Belgacom wanted to resolve occasional picture distortion caused by poor quality cabling at its subscribers’ premises. Nokia Siemens Networks’ solution, based on Cisco VQE technology*, enables faster channel switching and eliminates picture distortion, using only little backbone bandwidth.

“Enhancing customer satisfaction and operational efficiency lie at the heart of Cisco’s technology for optimizing medianets,” said Everth Flores, director, Service Provider Video Operations for Cisco Europe. “We are pleased that Cisco’s Visual Quality Experience technology, together with the client-based fast channel change, found in our set-top box, has enabled Belgacom to significantly reduce channel change time of its digital TV system, improve video delivery quality and increase customer satisfaction.”

Under the contract, Nokia Siemens Networks has implemented an intelligent resource control mechanism within its media delivery platform**. This platform, when overlaid on Cisco VQE technology, adapts the fast channel change service to work within the available bandwidth at each end-user device, thereby protecting other services on the same connection.

In addition, Nokia Siemens Networks’ media delivery platform is used to control and manage fast channel change and packet-loss repair services, and remotely deploy it across set-top boxes being used by subscribers. As a result, Belgacom is able to provide, configure and monitor the services via its operational support systems.

Cloud service supports world’s largest youth volleyball tournament

Cubio, Nokia Siemens Networks use cloud-based platform to improve interaction between event organizer and participants at the Power Cup

Thousands of players and visitors at one of the world’s largest youth sports tournaments will get instant event information and ‘lost and found’ service, and interact with event organizers via SMS, email, Facebook and Twitter, thanks to a simple cloud-based communications platform. The Power Cup, a youth volleyball tournament in Finland that sees up to 1,000 teams competing, is using a platform supplied by the service provider Cubio and powered by Nokia Siemens Networks’ technology. The four-day event runs from June 9 – 12 in Lahti, Finland.

“We wanted to offer personalized and up-to-date information services for players and visitors, but we didn’t want to create a complex and costly infrastructure for just a four-day event,” said Hanna Iiskola-Kesonen, managing director, Finnish Volleyball Association. “We chose Nokia Siemens Networks’ cloud-based communication platform as it makes our life simple by ensuring easy information dispersal while taking care of technical back-end issues.”

“Together with Nokia Siemens Networks, we provide ‘Cubio Tapahtuma (Event)’ in a Software-as-a-Service model. It is ready to use and can be easily subscribed to by organizers without worrying about technical back-end issues,” said Harry Järn, CEO, Cubio. “Nokia Siemens Networks’ cloud-based platform, as part of Cubio Tapahtuma (Event), has enabled us to offer a cost-effective, scalable platform to realize a close interaction between thousands of participants and visitors, and the event organizer. We manage the complete infrastructure setup and the user interface, and provide necessary support for improving interaction between the event organizer and visitors.”

Nokia Siemens Networks’ cloud-based communication and messaging platform enables event organizers to provide ‘welcome’ and registration messages and ‘lost and found’ services. It also enables event organizers to provide relevant and timely information about match schedules and results across about 300 volleyball courts using different channels depending on user preference, such as SMS and email. In addition, it enables event organizers to connect to participants’ social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. Moreover, the platform’s auto-polling functionality can facilitate immediate feedback from participants to event management.

INOVENTICA group of companies to offer cloud services

Select Nokia Siemens Networks to deploy DWDM optical transport network across Russia to provide cloud services

INOVENTICA, a new infrastructure service provider in Russia, is ready to offer cloud computing services to public and private customers. The company will use a DWDM optical transport network from Nokia Siemens Networks to deliver its services. The network is capable of delivering services at 40G (gigabits per second) to 83 Russian regions.

“The development of our own high-tech IT infrastructure with an advanced transport network is a strategically important step for us,” said Vladimir Scherbinin, general director, INOVENTICA. “Expansion of the backbone capacity using advanced technologies from Nokia Siemens Networks will help us improve the quality of services delivered to end-users."

Private clouds address the security concerns of large enterprises and public sector companies. Moreover, cloud computing helps them focus on their core priorities without getting concerned with technology implementation,” said Kristina Tikhonova, general director, Nokia Siemens Networks, Russia.

The solution provided by Nokia Siemens Networks is based on its multi-reach hiT 7300 DWDM platform that uses coherent transmission technology*, in particular a modulation format called CP-QPSK (coherent polarization multiplexed quadrature phase shift keying). The platform offers effective 40 Gbps optical channel network design, low-latency connections, and enables an overall reduction in deployment cost and time. It also reduces the operating expenditure and speeds up service delivery.

Nokia Siemens Networks has also supplied its TNMS (Transmission Network Management System) that provides end-to-end administration and performance monitoring for the complete network. TNMS improves operational efficiency, reduces costs for service delivery and simplifies network operations.
