Unlike those cameras the DV1 doesn't have any internal storage for photos or video – instead you must insert a memory card, which allows users to choose the storage size they require. Like similar cameras a built-in USB connector attaches to PCs and a HDMI socket allows connection to a TV.
It was easy to use with only a few simple buttons on the back. The rear screen was too densely packed with information for our liking but it was still easy to follow. It's waterproof to 5m deep and shockproof for a 1.5m fall.
What lets this device down is the quality: while it technically shoots 1080p-resolution high-definition video, what came out was relatively poor. If you have a recent smartphone it's likely to give better results.
That was in bright light – quality deteriorated further the darker it got. Photos were likewise poor – though they have a nominal resolution of four megapixels we were disappointed.
In all, you will be better off with the Flip MinoHD, which is still available, or if you have a good smartphone, stick to that.
