Atrix 4G Headed for July Gingerbread Update

When we last checked out the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the Atrix 4G, we slated it for a late June to July over-the-air release date. Now, it seems that AT&T and Motorola are closing in on a final Gingerbread build for the Atrix that will be available via update some time in July. The July update will be the third over-the-air modification from Motorola and AT&T since the February release of this dual-core superphone.

The update will bring Android 2.3.3 to users on AT&T with a new and improved Motorola Blur skin. Sideloading will be enabled as per AT&T’s new ruling on the issue. Of course, Motorola’s packed some major features into this update including, but not limited to: overscroll glow, application grouping, re-built main applications, downloads management, an improved camera, better power management, a re-done keyboard, and some nifty new animations. The device’s new version of Blur looks a lot like the Droid X’s recently obtained update.

We recently checked out a newer Gingerbread build on the Atrix 4G numbered Build 4.5.47. The smoothness and relative buglessness suggest that a final build is not far from reach. Still, we’re looking at 2.3.3 for the July launch without the added Google Talk video chat capabilities from Android 2.3.4. We imagine Motorola will bring those to the Atrix with a future update in August (or perhaps September).

If you want to check out all of the neatly designed Gingerbread stuff built for the Atrix Gingerbread update, you should travel to our Facebook gallery. Make sure to “like” our page for more exclusive Atrix 4G news and rumors!

Motorola Droid Bionic will be released before the end of summer

Smartphone Motorola Droid Bionic was first introduced at CES earlier this year and has attracted attention due to a number of notable features. But since the announcement was more than six months, and the actual output device on the market did not take place. In April it was reported that the unit will not be delayed until early summer. Then it was reported that the delay associated with making changes to the original structure of the aircraft, which at the time was to become one of the main proposals of the operator Verizon Wireless with LTE-enabled networks. After this, too, passed a long time, but the release dates of the machine and have not been identified. Moreover, it was reported that due to internal problems, Motorola refuses to release a number of products, and Droid Bionic, strongly delayed with the release, it looked like a candidate for the cuts. But now the official Twitter company reported that the model still on sale and it will happen in the summer. The exact timing is not called, but said that he would receive a number of updates. At the time of the announcement at CES 2011 smartphone features Motorola Droid Bionic were as follows: 4.3-inch screen with a resolution of qHD, dual-core processor with 1 GHz, 512 MB RAM, VGA front and the main 8-megapixel camera. In January, these characteristics seemed relevant best offers from other companies, but in July they were not so impressive - a visible advantage over the competition is not observed. Therefore, it is likely that at Motorola are busy refining the model to a level that would have allowed the fight to the flagship devices from other companies. First and foremost it is about creating an advantage over Samsung Galaxy S II and guessing the level of performance next-generation iPhone. Among the assumptions that it can add the engineers there are several versions, such as adding a hardware QWERTY-keyboard interface and modified over Motorola's operating system Android 2.3. But the answer to the question of what exactly will change in the smartphone will be known only to the receipt of the device on the market, which is now known, still take place this summer.

Motorola Mobility and China Telecom Introduce the Third Milestone to China

Thinner, faster, smarter XT883 offers unprecedented mobile power to Chinese consumers this summer

Motorola Mobility Technologies (China) Co., Ltd introduced XT883, the newest and most advanced member of the powerful Milestone family, today at China Telecom’s CDMA Summit and 2011 e-Surfing 3G Handset Trade Fair. Setting a new milestone for speed, XT883 is a mobile powerhouse, delivering uncompromising Web, email and media content to people in China and around the world. The individual with this device in hand will become a digital trailblazer, channeling the strengths of the device to power through their day.

China Telecom’s standing as the world’s largest CDMA operator makes its annual handset trade fair one of the most important for the industry globally. Held in Guangzhou, the show sets the stage for China Telecom’s coming year, and is a fitting venue for the unveiling of the XT883 in China. The fair will be open until June 19th.

With a powerful dual-core processor, the XT883 is twice as fast as industry-average single-core processors, enabling users to simultaneously run apps, stream media, talk, email and surf the Web, all without delay. A permanent number row on the top of the thin QWERTY keypad lets users type and text faster and more accurately without the need to always hit the ‘ALT’ button. And with a 4.0-inch brilliant touchscreen display, XT883 showcases even clearer photos, Web pages and video content than any Motorola Milestone device before. Enhanced security features enable users to access corporate emails, documents and calendars, with no need to wonder if their IT departments will approve.

“Motorola’s Milestone line has already been a great success in China, and XT883 is a much anticipated addition to the family,” said Ma Daojie, director of the China Telecom Device Management Center. “We are delighted to introduce XT883 here in Guangzhou at our most important trade show of the year. The launch represents a genuine milestone for China Telecom’s partnership with Motorola, and for our combined commitment to bringing great mobile experiences to Chinese consumers.”

“The Motorola XT883 enables even the most productive people accomplish more,” said Frank Meng, corporate senior vice president, and president, Greater China of Motorola Mobility, Inc. “The Milestone brand invokes a sense of advanced intelligence and amazing speed, and we wanted to build upon that standard. We are happy to continue the Milestone tradition in cooperation with China Telecom with the introduction of XT883 in China.”

Marvel at Amazing Media Capabilities and Connectivity
XT883 offers loads of features for extraordinary entertainment and functionality. Users can leave their digital cameras at home and still capture their adventures with a powerful 8-megapixel camera with flash and digital zoom, and use the device’s front-facing camera to video chat with friends, family and coworkers, whether with Wi-Fi or a 3G connection. It’s easy to shoot videos and play them back in 1080p HD brilliance. Users also have the benefit of Adobe Flash 10, allowing them to stream Web content, videos and games on the most popular video player available today. And all of this is delivered on a generous and stunning 4.0-inch display.

XT883 runs on China Telecom’s e-Surfing 3G network, which enables an effortless Internet experience so you can quickly browse content-rich web pages, watch online videos or stream music. SHOP4APPS China, Motorola’s own app market designed specifically for users in China, offers access to the information you need and the games you want with thousands of specially selected apps available for download or purchase right from your XT883 smartphone.

XT883 supports integrated smart technology so your phone and your dock remember what features and functions you want. As a user transitions environments throughout the day, XT883 adapts its features automatically based on the dock it’s connected to and pre-defined settings. For example, when a user connects his or her XT883 into a HD Dock in the bedroom, the device automatically adjusts to pre-defined settings, such as lower screen brightness or an alarm clock. When moved from the bedroom to the car dock, XT883 can automatically display GPS navigation and stream a pre-selected morning radio program, giving users the experience they desire.

XT883 empowers users to manage business instantly, intuitively and securely – from anywhere in the world. Never be out of the know with work issues by keeping up with corporate email sent directly to the device. Users can keep track of their schedule through a full calendar and they have the ability to see if colleagues are busy and initiate new meetings. Users can download, review and edit documents, presentations or spreadsheets with a pre-loaded Quick Office. The large 4.0-inch display makes it easy to see the document with little scrolling or panning. Additionally, the five-row QWERTY keypad makes it easy to quickly type up responses to emails, and there’s no need to wonder if the IT department will approve XT883, as the device is fully Business Ready with security, password protection, virtual wipe and encryption requirements.

Motorola Mobility to Work with Honeywell Security Group to Supply Connected Home Security Solution for Operators

At the 2011 Cable Show, Motorola Mobility, Inc. (NYSE: MMI) announced its intention to work with Honeywell Security Group to develop an end-to-end security solution for cable and telecom service providers, offering subscribers a connected home security service that enables remote management of alarm panels and associated security devices using multiple control interfaces—including TV, smartphone, PC and tablet. A concept demonstration of this connected home solution is on-display at Motorola Mobility’s booth #609 at the Cable Show.

“Motorola and Honeywell Security Group are both leaders in their respective industries, and our anticipated relationship is expected to bring a new level of expertise and resources to service providers in expanding their offerings to include connected home security,” said Leon Hounshell, Division General Manager, 4Home Connected Solutions Group, Motorola Mobility. “At the Cable Show, we’re showcasing a concept demonstration of a turn-key solution for the deployment of next-generation security services to millions of subscribers.”

Overview: Connected Home Security
Motorola and Honeywell’s connected home security system would allow subscribers to protect, monitor and control their house while at home or away. A simple user interface on the TV, computer, smart phone or tablet hosts a range of customizable services, including security system control, energy management, alerts and notifications, and live video surveillance, in addition to 24x7 central station monitoring, to meet a range of subscriber levels and needs.

The concept solution combines the strengths of the two industry-leading companies. Motorola’s 4Home software platform was designed on open standards to enable service providers to offer a variety of new services that work across a range of devices and protocols. Honeywell’s security systems and Total Connect remote services provide end-users with protection from burglary, fire and other threats, in addition to enabling system monitoring and management via the web and mobile devices. Together, Motorola and Honeywell Security Group will provide a turn-key security system that delivers Honeywell’s trusted alarm panel hardware with device management from Motorola’s carrier-grade, open software platform—allowing simple integration of a range of connected security devices, scalability to millions of subscribers, and the infrastructure to support third-party services.

“We are looking forward to this collaboration with Motorola as it highlights the synergies in our approach to the connected home market,” said JoAnna Sohovich, President, Honeywell Security and Communications Americas. “By integrating Honeywell security with Motorola’s software platform, we will once again be delivering scalable, mass-market solutions that optimize security functionality for both subscribers and service providers.”

Service Provider Benefits
Motorola and Honeywell’s planned solution for service providers will not only support connected home security, but will be designed to have the flexibility to seamlessly deliver a variety of additional value-added services to subscribers. This capability is rooted in Motorola’s underlying 4Home software platform, which provides the framework to expand device management across the entire ecosystem of connected home devices, which can be enabled by service providers under the service architecture for connected home services such as home monitoring, energy management, home health, and others.

Motorola’s platform-based solution benefits service providers with reduced total cost of ownership, scalability to new devices and protocols, remote subscriber support, and simple SDK APIs to integrate with back-end systems, including CRM, billing and others. In addition, Motorola’s recent integration of its 4Home software platform and the EDGE management system facilitates device management from both the subscriber and service provider ends, enabling virtual support solutions that reduce truck rolls and facilitate real-time troubleshooting.

Motorola Mobility Simplifies Multi-Screen Video Delivery with Solution that Integrates Adaptive Streaming and Advanced Security

SecureMedia Encryptonite ONE™ HLS+ enables lower-cost content processing and secure distribution to multiple devices

With today’s introduction of Motorola Mobility Inc. ‘s (NYSE: MMI) SecureMedia Encryptonite ONE™ HLS+ solution, service providers can simplify operations and lower cost while giving subscribers the ability to stream video content to many devices in and beyond the home. The end-to-end adaptive streaming solution enables secure content delivery to multiple devices including smartphones, tablets, laptops, game consoles and other connected consumer electronic devices.

As the industry continues to deploy multi-screen video services, service providers are confronted with a matrix of different adaptive streaming formats, security technologies and video playback applications to reach a range of consumer devices. SecureMedia Encryptonite ONE HLS+ simplifies this challenge by using today’s predominant adaptive streaming protocol, HTTP Live Streaming (HLS+) for both linear and on-demand content distribution to all devices, while adding full digital rights management (DRM) functionality through the integration of SecureMedia Encryptonite ONE solution. For service providers, SecureMedia Encryptonite ONE HLS+ streamlines content ingestion, processing, delivery and security to minimize costs compared with traditional “silo” approaches where companies must invest in specific headend equipment and allocate additional bandwidth in the distribution network for each adaptive streaming format.

"We continue to deliver best-in-class media-security solutions for content distribution, enabling service providers the flexibility to embrace the exploding consumer demand for multi-screen experiences,” said Alan Lefkof, vice president, software solutions, Converged Experiences, Motorola Mobility. “Our SecureMedia Encryptonite ONE HLS+ solution overcomes the challenges of multi-screen content delivery by streamlining the entire content processing and delivery process while also meeting Hollywood studio secure-delivery requirements. We look forward to working with today’s mobile, set-top and connected device manufacturers to incorporate our SecureMedia Encryptonite ONE HLS+.”

SecureMedia Encryptonite ONE HLS+ has been developed for Android clients on smartphones and tablets, such as the Motorola XOOM™ tablet and the latest Motorola DROID family of handsets, as well as Motorola’s IP and hybrid set-tops. SecureMedia Encryptonite ONE HLS+ clients have also been developed for other platforms such as Apple iOS and OS X, Windows®, and Sony Playstation® 3. SecureMedia Encryptonite ONE HLS+ clients for Internet-connected TVs, Blu-ray Disc™ players and set-tops from other manufacturers will be available in the near future.

The SecureMedia Encryptonite ONE HLS+ solution is currently in trials with premier North American operators.

SecureMedia Encryptonite ONE HLS+ will be demonstrated on a number of consumer devices on the Motorola Mobility booth (#609) at The Cable Show 2011, June 14-16 in Chicago.

In order to enable the kind of entertainment experience consumers desire today and for years to come, Motorola Mobility Inc (NYSE: MMI) is engaging with Time Warner Cable to develop a video gateway platform capable of delivering an advanced consumer in-home entertainment experience. Incorporating the latest set-top and gateway-related technologies will enable Time Warner Cable to continue to enhance their video-based services to deliver compelling premium content and applications to the home.

“Consumers want to watch content on their own terms and the migration towards video gateways is recognition that traditional set-tops are evolving to enable the entertainment experience consumers are now demanding,” said Larry Robinson, corporate vice president and general manager, Home Devices, Motorola Mobility. “Motorola’s DCX3600M Video Gateway enables service providers to shift to IP in the home so that they can more easily offer the types of services consumers are beginning to expect.”

Motorola’s DCX3600M Video Gateway includes built-in transcoding capabilities allowing it to take QAM MPEG-2 services and transcode to MPEG-4 for delivery to mobile devices including tablets and smartphones over the home network. The DCX3600M also provides operators with the flexibility to deliver a mixture of QAM and IP services. The device can tune up to six QAM services simultaneously, or it can access IP services delivered directly over DOCSIS. Motorola’s DCX3600M Video Gateway creates an IP home network without having to install new wiring and allows for the seamless sharing of content with other compatible devices in the home.

“The migration of our network and in-home video services to IP represents an important shift as we look to provide our consumers with the most compelling user experience possible and we are excited to collaborate with Motorola in the area of video gateways,” said Mike Hayashi, EVP, Architecture, Development and Engineering, Time Warner Cable. “These types of platforms will offer our customers greater flexibility when accessing our premium services.”

Motorola Mobility will be demonstrating its advanced video gateway which also acts as a high-speed multimedia hub for the home, enabling content viewing in various formats and on multiple devices more easily. The DCX3600M is being demonstrated at the Cable Show in Chicago, booth #609.

(NYSE: MMI) announced the availability of Motorola Televation™, a broadband device that works with a Wi-Fi router to allow consumers to watch live TV on a connected IP device anywhere around the home, whether they are preparing food in the kitchen or relaxing in the backyard.

According to Motorola’s 2010 Media Engagement Barometer research, Americans watch an average of 21 hours of video content a week and about 86 percent pay for TV service. Furthermore, in May 2011, Motorola conducted focus groups with consumers in the New York and Los Angeles metro markets. In many cases, consumers liked the idea of watching live TV somewhere other than a traditional family room and felt it would allow them to spend more time with loved ones if they had the ability to watch different programs in the same room.

“Consumers love entertainment, and want easy access to TV no matter where they are in the home. Coupled with the explosive popularity of tablet devices, this represents a terrific opportunity for MSOs to increase customer satisfaction while generating new revenue,” said John Burke, senior vice president and general manager, Converged Experiences, Motorola Mobility. “Televation gives our customers the ability to launch a new service that puts innovation back into TV, enabling their subscribers to enjoy TV beyond the TV.”

Televation employs a 1GHz digital tuner and CableCard to access broadcast TV channels directly from a coax outlet. The device has a high-performance transcoder that translates programming in real-time from MPEG-2 to MPEG-4, as well as changing resolution and bit rate to match the capabilities of the consumer’s viewing device while maintaining excellent picture quality. The device has an Ethernet jack to plug directly into the home Wi-Fi router so the TV show can be wirelessly streamed over IP to any device connected to the home network. To keep the programming secure while it is being streamed, and to preserve the digital rights associated with the program, Televation utilizes Motorola’s SecureMedia IPRM-HN technology. IPRM-HN has been approved by both CableLabs and the DTLA (Digital Transmission Licensing Administrator), giving content owners peace of mind that their valuable asset remains safe.

Motorola provides Software Development Kits (SDKs) for both Android and iOS development environments, so customers can easily develop client applications that enable the subscriber to navigate, discover and select the show they want to watch. Motorola also provides a reference client application for tablet devices that can be easily branded, giving customers an alternative to developing their own application. Motorola worked closely with engineers at Comcast Innovation Labs to develop Televation.

“Motorola shares our focus on developing innovative consumer entertainment experiences, and we’re pleased to have been able to work with them on Televation,” said Tony Werner, executive vice president and chief technology officer for Comcast. “As the digital home continues to evolve, Televation is one of many tools that MSOs can use to give consumers a more portable TV experience in the home so they can watch anytime and anywhere.”

As the developer of the Motorola XOOM™, the award winning tablet powered by Android, and Televation, Motorola is uniquely positioned to provide converged experiences that empower people to enjoy their favorite content where and when they want. Televation will be showcased at the 2011 Cable Show in Motorola’s booth #609 and in the Comcast booth #1201, June 14-16, in Chicago, IL.

Motorola Mobility Launches Medios Xperience Platform to Deliver Personalized TV Viewing and Interaction

Enjoy new levels of portability and content discovery across multiple screens from anywhere in the home

Motorola Mobility, Inc. (NYSE: MMI) is placing greater control into consumers’ hands to personalize their TV viewing across multiple devices anywhere in the home with the launch of its Medios Xperience platform. As part of the Medios multi-screen service management software suite, the cloud-based applications platform allows service providers to merge video content with social networking, games and web-based content and delivers greater interaction capabilities with broadcast television and video-on-demand (VOD) services.

As part of its continued focus on infusing consumer insights into technology innovations, Motorola recently hosted a series of focus groups with consumers in the New York and Los Angeles metro areas to discuss their TV-related experiences. Consumers expressed a desire to more easily find and better organize content, such as TV shows and movies; greater flexibility for when, how and where TV is consumed, such as the ability to stream live shows to any device in the home; and improved access to supplementary content so that viewers can quickly access news and gossip about their favorite shows and actors. Motorola’s Medios Xperience platform will deliver on viewers’ desires for greater TV consumption flexibility across mobile devices. Consumers want to simultaneously engage with additional content and social networking sites while they watch TV.

“As our recent focus groups clearly demonstrate, consumers want to be able to personalize their TV-watching experience and want the greatest flexibility in where and when they watch content,” said John Burke, senior vice president and general manager, Converged Experiences, Motorola Mobility. “Consumers expressed strong interest in being able to bookmark TV shows and movies and have improved video-on-demand searching to make it easier to find a particular program. Motorola’s Medios Xperience platform delivers these enriched TV experiences across multiple screens in an easy-to-deploy, cost-effective manner.”

Using the Motorola Medios Xperience platform, service providers can immediately deploy the following key services to their subscribers:

• TV and VOD Remote – Transforms a companion device, such as a tablet, smartphone or laptop, into a remote control to browse the enhanced programming guide, choose a VOD or linear title, and launch it on their device or any TV in the home. The experience will be part of a service provider’s branded site allowing consumers to look for content without interfering with the TV-watching experience.

• TV and VOD Streaming – Uses a companion device to browse a VOD store or enhanced linear electronic program guide (EPG), search and discover content, and watch it on the device. The functionality adds the flexibility of another screen in the home to consume premium content along with menu-based social networking options to further enhance the TV-watching experience

• Enhanced User Interface – Provides a rich and intuitive visual interface that improves search, navigation and discovery of content such as movies and TV shows. Featuring personalized recommendations, streamlined decision-making scenarios and a watch-queue, the enhanced user guide lever¬ages the devices consumers are already using and helps service providers to manage usability and experience improvements and increase average revenue per user (ARPU) while more effectively competing with web providers vying for subscribers’ attention.

As an added benefit for service providers, the Motorola Medios Xperience software development kit (SDK) allows them to offer customized user experiences and application combinations to subscribers in a cost-effective, scalable and open framework. To help service providers get started, Motorola’s Medios Xperience platform has several core experiences built-in that they can immediately deploy for increased consumer value. Providers can also choose to build on these use-cases to scale their portfolio of multi-screen experiences.

Since Motorola Medios Xperience is built with a clean separation between applications, control and content transport layers, service providers are able to quickly develop and deploy new experiences to mobile and home devices either internally or working with third-party partners without significant application development or infrastructure expense. Motorola also can host the platform on behalf of service providers as well as attractive software-as-a-service deployment models for these applications.

Motorola Mobility Secures DTLA Approval for In-Home Content Streaming Technology

Affirms Motorola’s IPRM-HN technology for securely delivering content beyond the TV screen to a variety of connected IP devices in and around the home

Motorola Mobility, Inc. (NYSE: MMI) announced its Internet Protocol Rights Management-Home Network (IPRM-HN) technology passed the Digital Transmission Licensing Administrator’s (DTLA) approval process, as an “approved output and recording technology” for digital transmission content protection (DTCP). As interest in delivering media beyond the TV screen rapidly increases, the DTLA approval gives service providers confidence in using Motorola’s technology to securely move digital content, such as movies or live TV, throughout the home.

Motorola’s IPRM-HN technology provides the ability to securely stream or copy stored content from an initial receiving device to another authenticated device within the consumer’s home network, also called the secure home domain. Motorola’s technology will provide another level of confidence for content providers, such as studios and network broadcasters, that a service provider’s security system is capable of protecting valuable video assets. As part of the SecureMedia™ portfolio, Motorola’s IPRM-HN increases security features on Motorola’s video delivery devices such as our set-top box portfolio and the VAP2400 video bridge solution.

Motorola now has received approval of its IPRM-HN technology from both DTLA and CableLabs, which ensures that our technology meets the highest protection standards in the industry. This approval by DTLA indicates the high confidence in Motorola Mobility to deliver secure content protection capabilities in and around the home.

“Motorola recognizes that premium content delivered to consumers by service providers needs to be strictly protected and delivered in a secure manner,” said Paul Moroney, vice president and Motorola Fellow, Motorola Mobility. “We created IPRM-HN to ensure that content value is preserved and business models and contracts can be enforced, while simultaneously providing subscribers with seamless content consumption throughout their homes.”
