ST-Ericsson announces new cost savings plan

Plan aimed to achieve $120 million of annualized savings by end of 2012
Includes global workforce review that may affect up to 500 employees worldwide
Company also pushes out target for break-even based on current visibility
Geneva, Switzerland, June 23, 2011 - ST-Ericsson, a joint venture of STMicroelectronics (NYSE:STM) and Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC), today announced that due to recent changes in the business environment and reduced demand for legacy products at certain customers, it will launch a cost savings plan to achieve about $120 million of annualized savings by the end of 2012.

"These actions while necessary to strengthen the financial position of the company, will not compromise the execution of our new products and delivery to our customers," said Gilles Delfassy, president and CEO of ST-Ericsson. "We continue to gain traction on our new product portfolio and remain steadfastly committed to leadership in the smartphone and tablet markets."

Also, while the company keeps its strong focus to improving financial performance, the company's path to profitability is expected to take longer, with the target break-even, based on current visibility, now planned later than the previously anticipated second quarter 2012.

The cost savings plan includes a global workforce review that may affect up to 500 employees worldwide. Specific country impact related to the plan and further details will be provided when employee representatives have been involved where required. Restructuring costs are estimated to be approximately $55 million, of which the majority is expected to be recorded during the second half of 2011.

Ericsson's 3E design kit enables easier exploration of digital power architectures

3E Gold Edition software simplifies monitoring and configuration of digitally-controlled dc-dc converters
3E design kit makes it easy for designers to explore and develop representative digital power-management scenarios
3E platform can optimize operating efficiency in real-time to conserve energy and minimize operating costs
Enhanced performance, Energy management, and End-user value are the key design objectives of Ericsson’s 3E range of digitally-controlled dc-dc converters. A second generation of the design kit, with extended features, now simplifies their implementation within PMBus systems.

The 3E Gold Edition design kit hardware comprises two boards that accommodate one or two intermediate-bus converters and up to six point-of-load regulators. Sample devices include the BMR453 and BMR454 intermediate-bus converters together with examples of the BMR462, BMR463, and BMR464 point-of-load regulators. The boards can operate independently or be plugged together to form a representative PMBus-controlled power system. The design kit includes a USB-to-PMBus adapter that provides a seamless interface between the 3E GUI Gold Edition software running on a Windows PC and the target 3E family dc-dc converters. The 3E GUI Gold Edition software package together with an extensive library of technical papers and supporting information that accompanies the hardware elements can be download from Ericsson Power Modules website.

"The 3E Gold Edition software makes it easier than ever for users to precisely configure each converter in a system and monitor its performance, which in turn encourages users to explore and develop methods such as dynamic bus-voltage control that can optimize system-level power consumption to accommodate the wide load variations that today’s network infrastructures present" said Patrick Le Fèvre, marketing director at Ericsson Power Modules.

App award winners solve kitchen and purchasing angst

The winners of the Ericsson Application Awards for 2011 are developers who solve problems of domestic food waste and help friends and experts inform consumers whether they are making a good purchase.

It is the second annual contest run by Ericsson in partnership with Sony Ericsson. 158 teams submitted entries, which had to be an Android-based application (web or native) which used at least one Ericsson Labs API and touched on the theme "Connected Things."

At an event held in Stockholm but also live-cast on the web at www.ericssonapplicationawards.com, four finalists from Italy, China, Sweden and the United Kingdom showed their apps while jury members deliberated before declaring one winner in the student category and one in the company category.

Jonas Wilhelmsson from Ericsson and the jury chairman, said the entries were all very high quality and it was “tough to put anyone in second place.” He said the winners’ edge was that they had thought through marketing and future plans better than the other competitors.

The student category prize and 15-thousand Euro check went to Italian team JustBit, with “What’s in My Kitchen.” The four students Daniele Albanese, Simone Notargiacomo, Francesco Pace, and Lorenzo Tavernese were actually last year’s runners up. Team spokesman Daniele Albanese said: “Our application keeps you from arriving home to an empty fridge or with a fridge full of product you don’t need or that have expired. Of course there are also fun features like recipe sharing, finding the closest market, and so on.”

The application uses RFID technology and wireless connectivity on an Android operating system.

“This year we won, finally and we are really, really happy,” added Albanese.

Start-up entrepreneurs Phil Woodward and Jos Shepherd from the United Kingdom are the winners in the company category. Their team HipSnip developed a personal shopping application to get product advice and recommendations. Phil Woodward said: “I think the shopping and social overlay are an exciting combination, plus we’re thinking from day one about how to make money.

We’re a young company, and to say to people we meet that we’ve won an Ericsson award is really important,” said Woodward. The partners plan to hire new employees with the prize money.

Jan Färjh, head of Ericsson Research and host of the awards, said the event is important “as this is where we discover and support entrepreneurs, and share ideas in the application developers’ world. We can promote new business ideas in the Networked Society.” The 2012 contest will soon be announced, as soon as a theme is decided.

Telkomvision selects Ericsson to enhance quality tv services in Indonesia

Greater channel capacity for Indonesian pay-TV offering
Enhanced choice and picture quality for subscribers
Ambitious goals for growth in Indonesian market
TelkomVision, the pay-TV service provider in Indonesia, has chosen a number of Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) solutions for the deployment of new TV services as it looks to provide greater value and quality for its subscribers across the country. The Ericsson system will enable TelkomVision to launch new channels across its satellite platform, and provides provision for HD services in the future.

“We are extremely ambitious about accelerating the growth of our subscriber base and are therefore looking to deploy advanced services that are unique and attractive to viewers,” said Elvizar KH, President Director, TelkomVision. “Pay TV is becoming more widespread throughout Indonesia, but in order to ensure further uptake, we must provide the greatest value possible. Ericsson’s solutions enable us to do just that – we can offer more channels than ever before, at even greater quality than viewers are used to. In addition, we now have the infrastructure to support the introduction of HDTV in the future. We’re delighted to take advantage of Ericsson’s experience in enabling advanced TV services around the world.”

TelkomVision, which currently has 200,000 subscribers in Indonesia, has selected a system comprising the Ericsson Video Processor Chassis (VPC), EN8130 MPEG 4 AVC encoders and MX8400 multiplexers. The resultant bit-rate savings enable TelkomVision to roll out 36 new channels to its subscribers at optimum quality.

“With such a large capacity for growth in the Indonesian market, pay-TV operators must ensure they are equipped for rapid increases in demand, and with that, higher expectations for quality services,” said Staffan Pehrson, Vice President and Head of Solution Area TV, Ericsson. “TelkomVision’s growth plans require powerful, reliable systems to be in place that ensure it can continue to offer greater value to new and existing subscribers. Ericsson has a long-established history of providing next generation TV systems throughout the Asia Pacific region and the rest of the world, and we are pleased to provide TelkomVision with the solutions it requires as it builds upon its service offering.”

Ericsson and partners take refugee reconnection mobile on World Refugee Day

On World Refugee Day on June 20, in support of UNHCR, a coalition of Ericsson, Refugees United and the mobile operators 3, Safaricom and MTN launched a multi-country mobile initiative to reconnect refugees with their loved ones through Refugees United’s anonymous, worldwide database.

In a world of rapidly multiplying mobile connections, millions of refugees are displaced as a result of disaster or political conflict. Not only driven out of their homes, children are separated from their parents, husbands from their wives, and brothers and sisters are scattered to the far corners of the globe.

How to bring them back together? Perhaps with the help of the most connected device: the mobile phone.

Refugees United is a Danish non-profit organization that developed a web platform to help displaced people search for family members around the world using an anonymous database capable of matching profiles. Ericsson and its partners have now unveiled a Refugees United mobile app for Android smartphones.

But mobile registration is not limited to smartphones, with other tools supporting everything from the lowest- to highest-end mobiles. The goal is to register 120,000 people by the end of 2011. By early June, 41,000 refugees had already signed up.

“There are more than 43 million refugees and 5 billion people with access to mobile phones,” Elaine Weidman-Grunewald, Vice President, Sustainability and Corporate Responsibility, says. “We want to leverage the ubiquity of mobile connectivity and phones to reach out to this isolated population, and help to bring them back into the Networked Society. This is the start of a journey to profile how the use of technology can be a force of good.”

Events organized to mark the launch included a June 19 concert held in Nairobi, Kenya by Sudanese rapper and former child soldier Emmanuel Jal, as well as other activities in Johannesburg, South Africa, Copenhagen, Denmark and Stockholm, Sweden. Kenyan mobile operator Safaricom and multinational South-Africa-based operator MTN both committed to helping take the Refugees United service to their broader subscriber bases in Africa, while the mobile operator 3 will serve as a partner in Denmark and Sweden.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) also used the day to highlight its “Do 1 Thing” campaign, a six-month worldwide effort aimed at promoting the stories of individual refugees, with everything from a public service spot by actress and UNHCR goodwill ambassador Angelina Jolie to photo exhibitions illustrating refugees’ lives. The campaign urges people to get involved and do just one thing to help refugees, from donating money to “liking” UNHCR on Facebook.

“More than 43 million people have fled a war or conflict,” Henne Mathisen, a UNHCR spokesperson, says. “That big a number does not make an impact on people. It is almost too impressive. We want to focus on the one.”

World Refugee Day was marked around the globe in hundreds of gatherings of all sizes. Iconic landmarks like New York’s Empire State Building in the US, the Tokyo Tower in Japans’ capital city and the Ericsson Globe arena in Stockholm were all bathed in blue light at night in solidarity with the tens of millions of refugees.

Also in Stockholm, UNHCR erected a white 16sq m refugee tent meant for a family of five in the middle of Stockholm’s central train station. The inside of the tent was dark and quiet, filled with blankets, water jugs, pots and pans, all symbols of involuntary flight in the midst of bustling, voluntary Stockholm travelers. Passers-by could sample the high-protein food that sustains malnourished children in refugee camps and leave notes saying what they personally would take with them if they were forced to flee. These included:

“Mobile phone and cat”

“Water”

“Friends”

“Memory”

Danish film star and Refugees United goodwill ambassador Mads Mikkelsen visited the tent along with his friend David Mikkelsen, one of two brothers who founded Refugees United after trying to help an Afghan refugee find his family after years of separation.

“This is not something we could dream of having the chance to do 20 years ago,” Mads Mikkelsen says “It opens a new door. All of a sudden, people have a tool that allows them to find their loved ones.”

Ericsson employees were also on hand in Rinkeby, a Stockholm suburb with a large refugee community, mainly from East Africa, in order to promote and help with the registration process.

The Ericsson van pulled up near Rinkeby Torg, the bustling heart of the neighborhood filled with fruit and vegetable stands, children playing and men laughing in the rain.

Charlotta Mantell, a Creative Director at Ericsson in Stockholm, who spent the afternoon in Rinkeby doing outreach work, said that local residents were intrigued by both the mobile app and the Refugees United database. Several people registered on the database, and Mantell and her Ericsson co-worker Sandra Galan, a business builder in experience marketing, helped one man use the database to try to find family members.

He did not find anyone. But Mantell said they urged him to keep checking.

“Our message was to sign up, and maybe your family or friends will be able to find you. They may not be in the database today, but they might be tomorrow.”

Telco 2.0 Best Practice Live! 2011: the free virtual conference at your fingertips

You are just one click away from engaging directly with some of the movers, shakers and thought leaders in the evolution of telecoms – all from the comfort of your office desk, your sofa at home or even on the go. Interactivity is a key element of Telco 2.0 Best Practice Live! 2011: the uniquely virtual online forum mapping the cutting-edge intersection of telecoms, media and technology. The event runs live on June 28 and 29 and will be available on demand. Because it’s free, it won’t cost you anything but your time, and the event will even help you to maximize that.

Telco 2.0 Best Practice Live! is unique among industry events, as the entire experience is virtual. The “venue” is your screen: whether it be on a mobile phone, tablet or computer. All of the speakers will address the event through prerecorded presentations supplemented by a live online presence. Ericsson is one of the event sponsors, which is being run by consulting and research company TL Partners. You can register for the event on the Telco 2.0 Best Practice Live! 2011 website.

Stefan Hedelius, Head of Strategy and Marketing at Ericsson’s Business Unit (BU) Multimedia, will be among the speakers that participants will be able to submit questions to and chat with in real time.

Hedelius will take part in the Mobile Broadband Networks session on June 29 by delivering a presentation on the segmentation of mobile broadband. He will outline the move from one-size-fits-all mobile broadband solutions to opportunities that are tailored to specific operators – mainly in transformation projects in Operational Support Systems and Business Support Systems (OSS/BSS).

Other event sessions will cover the opportunities for telecoms in cloud services, digital entertainment 2.0, mobile applications and applications stores.

Just as they would if they were attending an event in person, participants will have excellent networking opportunities – not just with speakers and presenters, but with other participants in real time. On-screen information will show who is logged in at any given time. Participants who want to focus only on the content can opt to hide their presence online.

Similarly, the participants will be able to visit an exhibition area. Ericsson will showcase material related to mobile broadband segmentation, Operations and Business Support Systems, and the Networked Society, including views from the company’s Networked Society blog.

Fredrik Almqvist, Strategic Marketing Manager at Ericsson’s BU Multimedia, says that the way Telco 2.0 Best Practice Live! focuses on new and evolving business models will appeal to all areas of the telecom industry.

"Our industry has never changed as fast as it is changing right now, and Telco 2.0-related discussions are an important part of that," he says. "The obvious challenge is how to continue to drive revenues, create new business models and maximize return on investment during this change. For example, end users are taking more direct control over their spending. That trend is likely to grow, and it will be a factor in operators’ decision-making about OSS/BSS."

"Stefan will outline how the segmentation of mobile broadband is resulting in a variety of new opportunities for the industry to capitalize on existing solutions. We’re looking forward to hearing the views of the audience."

Almqvist adds: "There are so many benefits to attending an event like this. There are no costs, no travel or carbon-footprint worries, and the sessions are designed so that you can take a short time-out from your working day without inconvenience. The speakers are senior-level, there is an excellent exhibition space, and there are tremendous Q&A and networking opportunities benefits."

"It really is a conference at your fingertips."

The event will be available on-demand online until the end of September.

Ericsson uses technology for good to help reconnect refugees worldwide

Mobile communication brings hope to separated refugees
Multi-country mobile-industry campaign empowers refugees to search and reconnect with lost loved ones using mobile devices
Ericsson responds to United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) "1" campaign
With more than 42 million refugees in the world, many affected by political conflict and natural disasters, the added desperation of being separated from their family and friends without feasible means of tracing them can only compound their suffering.

In response to a call from UNHCR to "do 1 thing" to support refugees, Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) is leading an industry initiative to use technology as a force for good in support of the refugee cause.

Today - World Refugee Day - Ericsson, Refugees United and UNHCR are launching a multi-country campaign with mobile operators to extend the use of mobile services to facilitate global efforts to reconnect separated refugees.

This campaign includes the use of the latest Android app technology to extend the reach of the Refugees United service - enabling millions more refugees to use sms, mobile-enabled browsing (wireless application protocol or WAP) and the Android market to find their loved ones.

The Refugees United platform enables refugees to use mobile phones to register and search for loved ones via an anonymous database, and subsequently to connect using SMS or the internet.

Christopher Mikkelsen, Managing Director, Refugees United, says: "In our mission to help refugees searching for loved ones, the mobile phone is the link to the people we're working to help. Coupled with the right information, a simple handheld device becomes a powerful connector in even the remotest of places. This partnership will enable us to reach, and reconnect, countless separated families across Africa."

António Guterres, UN High Commissioner for Refugees, says: "UNHCR is pleased to join with Ericsson to broaden the availability of the Refugees United application to a number of markets, in both the developed and developing world. Helping refugees locate their loved ones using mobile text messages and mobile internet is one of the many ways in which technology is changing our world and helping people reconnect. Ensuring this is done in a way that respects the privacy and security of individual refugees, UNHCR is proud to participate in this pioneering and highly successful initiative."

The recent pilot of the mobile services in Uganda, involving Ericsson, pan-African operator Mobile Telephone Networks (MTN) and UNHCR has now developed into a multi-country agreement to deploy the service across Africa. Since the launch of the service in September 2010, 41,000 refugees have registered. Among these are cousins Abdulahi Hussein Sheikh and Mohamed Ali Salah who were separated in 1991 when fleeing the troubles in Somalia and have since found each other through the service after 20 years without contact.

In addition, Ericsson is launching the service in Kenya with Safaricom, and in Sweden and Denmark with the operator 3.

Elaine Weidman-Grunewald, Vice President, Sustainability and Corporate Responsibility at Ericsson, says: "We are building on our commitment to register 120,000 refugees by the end of the year with the launch of the Android app. Adding more countries through our operator partners and enabling access on multiple platforms will help us to achieve this goal, and help break down the obstacles to the reunification of refugees by using technology for good."

Notes to editors:

Elaine Weidman-Grunewald, Ericsson, David Mikkelsen, Co-founder of Refugee United and Mads Mikkelsen, Goodwill Ambassador for Refugees United will be available at 4pm CET at the UNHCR tent at Stockholm Central Station for interviews and comments. The Android app is available via Android Market. Please do not register unless you are seeking a lost person.

World Refugee Day 2011
June 20 is World Refugee Day. To mark the occasion and this year's 60th anniversary of the UN Refugee Convention on 28 July, UNHCR is launching a six-month campaign aimed at promoting public awareness of the stories of individual refugees and other forcibly displaced people. The campaign features a number of media products including a video by UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie, a new online video experience called "1 Life, 1 Story" in which refugees tell their own stories, and related publicity materials inviting members of the public to get involved and Do 1 Thing to help refugees, such as follow UNHCR on Facebook and Twitter. UNHCR is inviting media organizations to also engage and support the campaign via their news and blog sites. For interested media organizations, online digital banners are available for this purpose. Join us in letting others know that even one person forced to flee war or persecution, is one too many.

About United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR)
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees was established on December 14, 1950 by the United Nations General Assembly. The agency is mandated to lead and co-ordinate international action to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide. Its primary purpose is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees. It strives to ensure that everyone can exercise the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge in another State, with the option to return home voluntarily, integrate locally or to resettle in a third country. It also has a mandate to help stateless people. In more than five decades, the agency has helped tens of millions of people restart their lives. Today, a staff of some 6,600 people in more than 110 countries continues to help about 34 million persons.

About Refugees United:
Refugees United is a not-for-profit organization working to help reconnect separated refugee families. Using web and mobile technologies, the organization has created a platform of collaboration for refugee organizations and refugees themselves, where information on families separated can be uploaded, shared and used to reconnect families across borders and conflicts. Refugees wishing to remain anonymous can choose to register with nicknames or other non-sensitive information they are comfortable in sharing with the world.
Since moving to a predominantly mobile platform in Sept. 2010, Refugees United and partners have helped more than 41,000 refugees in search of missing family come on the platform, with more than 4,500 new refugees signing up every month.

Networked Society City Index – learning from the best

What’s the point of benchmarking cities? The answer: they are more universally
comparable than nation-based frameworks. A city focus provides opportunities
for faster learning and global best-practice sharing

T H E M U LT I P L E N AT U R E O F I C T is worthy of
note: both a service and business in itself,
ict is also a means for society to allow
new ideas to prosper and new, more efficient approaches to problem solving to be developed. Its
multiple nature creates a demand for new frameworks that give us a more complete view of its
potential, and allow us to realize it.
Ericsson’s “Networked Society City Index” report outlines the development of ict-enabled
benefits to cities. Its purpose is to create a broader discussion about the efficiency and innovation gains that ict provides – and to stimulate
cross-sector dialogs on successful strategies. A
vital part of this is the sharing of experiences –
both positive and less positive. The index and
the dimensions it includes capture these, and target ict enablement for triple-bottom-line (social, economic and environmental) development
across society as a whole.
E A S I E R TO CO M PA R E
Presenting the effects and benefits of ict maturity within a city framework creates several opportunities. Firstly, cities represent a more universally comparable context compared with the
more commonly used nation-based frameworks.
Comparing London with Shanghai makes more
sense than comparing the uk with China. Hence

Ericsson 3E digital voltage-regulators now support 93 PMBus commands to reduce energy consumption

More freedom for designers to dynamically optimize energy management
Increased efficiency with fewer components
Fully compliant with PMBus commands
Design simplified; time-to-market reduced
Based on digital-core controllers, the Ericsson 3E second generation of voltage regulators, the 12A BMR462, the 20A BMR463 and the 40A BMR464, now support 93 PMBus commands, allowing designers to monitor and control energy distribution from system level to board level.

The number of commands supported by the BMR462, BMR463 and BMR464, facilitate optimization of power-module configurations to varying load conditions. This minimizes power losses and reduces energy consumption by sending a command to automatically adjust the output voltage as the load changes; a lower voltage is optimal for low-load demand and a higher voltage as the load increases. It is also possible to shut down selected modules and reactivate them on-demand.

"Since Ericsson introduced its first digitally controlled voltage regulator November 2008, we have seen considerable increase of demand from system architects to optimize energy management to a very high degree. They are also motivated by the possibilities offered by PMBus and demand additional features that make it possible to fully integrate voltage regulators into their digital power management architecture," said Patrick Le Fèvre, marketing and communication director of Ericsson Power Modules. "That is exactly what our second generation of digital point-of-load is now offering, extending possibilities to an unprecedented level, saving cost, time-to-market and energy."

Ericsson to acquire Telcordia

Reinforces and expands Ericsson's position as leading player in operations support systems/business support systems (OSS/BSS) market with key position in service fulfilment, assurance, network optimization and real-time charging
Telcordia provides core competence and a leading market position within the OSS/BSS field - Ericsson brings global presence, service capabilities and leadership in OSS, charging and billing solutions
Ericsson will acquire 100 percent of the shares of Telcordia for USD 1.15 billion in an all cash transaction, on a cash and debt-free basis - approximately 2,600 employees to join Ericsson

Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC), the world leader in telecommunications technology and service, today announced that it has reached an agreement with Providence Equity Partners, LLC and Warburg Pincus to acquire 100 percent of the shares of Telcordia, a global leader in the development of mobile, broadband and enterprise communications software and services, for USD 1.15 billion. Closing anticipated to Q4 2011 with full effect Q1 2012.

Hans Vestberg, President and CEO, Ericsson, says: "The importance of operations and business support systems will continue to grow as more and more devices are connected, services become mobile and new business models for mobile broadband are introduced. In this context, Telcordia brings very skilled people and knowledge, a large business in North America and other markets, as well as a good multi vendor product portfolio."

"We have global presence and scale, global services capabilities and superior knowledge about networks and network performance, as well as an already established position in the OSS/BSS space. It is a perfect fit," he adds.

One of the main challenges for operators is how to handle the growth in mobile and fixed broadband traffic, as well as the new types of connected devices, services and applications and the high expectations on user experience, while at the same time increasing the efficiency in business and operations.

OSS and BSS are critical areas to handle this challenge and to simplify the processes that support the business. They drive the customer experience and serve as the engine to monetizing traffic, offerings and products that operators sell. All in all, these systems are crucial to create the experience users expect in a cost efficient manner.

Mark Greenquist, President and Chief Executive Officer, Telcordia, says: "The combination of Ericsson's global leadership position and Telcordia's long-standing expertise in solving the most complex communications challenges will benefit customers through new services and expanded capabilities."

"Together, we will lead the way into a new era of converged communications, while expanding our offerings to manage the world's most dynamic networks. Ericsson's acquisition of Telcordia signals their commitment to their future strategy to capitalize on the growth opportunities in the OSS/BSS communications industry. We appreciate the significant value added by Providence and Warburg Pincus over the last six years," he concludes

Providence and Warburg said, "We are confident that the company will benefit from becoming part of Ericsson, a clear global leader in providing technology and services to telecom operators."

The OSS/BSS is a growing market driven by the demand for business efficiency, innovation and high quality user experience. In 2010, the market for software and systems integration is valued at about USD 35 b and is expected to show a compound annual growth rate between 6-8 percent between 2010 and 2013. In addition, there is an attractive market for outsourced and hosted managed services, growing in the same range.

Building complementary strengths

Ericsson has a proven track record in building, integrating and managing networks. Telcordia's portfolio of proven and scalable software that make those networks more efficient, extends Ericsson's leadership and footprint in mobile OSS and positions it as a leading vendor for operational knowledge, including network, software, services, processes and efficiency in the growing OSS/BSS market.

Furthermore, Ericsson's capabilities and leading position in global services and systems integration will allow OSS/BSS portfolio to expand and support more operators around the world.

The deal creates the leader in Service Fulfilment, Service Assurance and Network Optimization and gives Ericsson a leading position in real-time charging and significant capabilities to support operators end to end. The combination will address the needs of Communications Service Providers to deliver mobile broadband and operational transformation to their subscribers.

Telcordia is headquartered in Piscataway, New Jersey, generated revenues of USD739 million during the last fiscal year ended January 31, 2011 and employs more than 2,600 people.

The transaction is subject to customary regulatory approvals and is expected to be accretive to Ericsson earnings per share within 12 months after closing.

Notes to editors:

Ericsson and Telcordia will host a joint phone briefing for media and analysts at 14:30 CET, e-mail Ericsson Media Relations, media.relations@ericsson.com for log in details.

Ericsson IPTV wins Global Innovation Awar

Ericsson and Melbourne University win Global Innovation Award
Next Generation TV for a Next Generation Broadband Network
Broadband TV is more than Entertainment
A project developed jointly by Ericsson and Melbourne University’s Institute for a Broadband-Enabled Society (IBES) has received a Global Innovation Award at the 2011 Global Telecoms Business Awards ceremony in London.

The award recognises collaboration between the University of Melbourne, IBES and Ericsson in developing Uni TV. The Uni TV project explores the use of IPTV to deliver education across a number of fields such as medicine, chemistry and engineering by delivering 3D content to help students engage with complex subject matter.

The Global Telecoms Business Awards are given annually to recognise innovation in the telecommunications industry.

Colin Goodwin, Ericsson Broadband Strategy Manager said, "The essential innovation with UniTV was to take Ericsson's standard IPTV product, which today delivers video entertainment to TV sets in countries around the world, and customise it for educational use. While this could have been done on today's broadband networks, the delivery of 3D and haptic (remote touch) elements, demonstrated with IBES, require the very high speeds the Australian National Broadband Network (NBN) will deliver."

IBES research leader, Ken Clarke said, "Uni TV provides a platform for innovation in the delivery in education across the world. Uni TV enables educators, technologists and vendors to work together to deliver educational services across a number of programs. As Australia rolls out the NBN, Uni TV will provide the basis for other educational services, such as professional development of remote doctors."

As IPTV is deployed over the next generation of fibre-based broadband networks it will become possible to use IPTV for many other purposes beyond simple entertainment. The aim of the Uni TV project was to demonstrate the ability of IPTV to deliver high-quality lecture and tutorial video material to students’ homes. While this was done in the context of university tuition, the concept can be extended to many other forms of educational and professional training.

IPTV refers to the delivery of video to television sets in homes and businesses, over very fast fixed broadband connections, rather than the old-style terrestrial broadcast networks. The combination of video and Internet technologies in IPTV means that the end-user is far more in control of what they watch - and how and when they watch - than the traditional passive viewer model.

Uni TV can be seen on YouTube at:

Ericsson’s leadership in IPTV was also highlighted in March 2011 when the Ericsson Multiscreen TV solution won the ‘Best Multiscreen TV Service’ award at the IP&TV Industry Awards 2011. This solution extends the TV experience to a range of devices such as tablets, smartphones and computers.

Re-farming 1800MHz spectrum for mobile broadband

As mobile data traffic continues to outstrip voice-centric traffic, one clear candidate for delivering additional spectrum for mobile broadband is the 1800MHz band used by more than 350 operators in 148 countries around the world.

As GSM traffic starts to diminish – a trend already established in advanced markets as subscribers migrate to other forms of mobile communication – operators with 1800MHz spectrum can begin to re-farm the freed up bands for use by mobile broadband radio technologies such as LTE and HSPA.

The 1800MHz band has a number of advantages for use by mobile broadband radio technologies. Its broad global deployment means it provides a good complement for LTE in other bands, for example. It also offers typically 2 x 75MHz spectrum bands that are not very fragmented in most markets.

Ericsson Studio designated a world-class center by the ABPM

Customer engagement, collaboration, inspiration and making space for creativity were key elements in the thinking behind Ericsson Studio – our headquarters-based VIP visitor center. Just seven months after it opened, proof has come that those objectives are being met, with the center becoming the first of its kind in Europe to be awarded "world-class" status by the Association of Briefing Program Managers (ABPM).

The US-based ABPM champions and provides resources for the development of programs mainly related to briefing centers, better known in Europe as experience centers.

The association presents "world-class" awards across a range of categories, including World Class Center. While multiple centers can be named world class, Ericsson Studio is the only institution to be granted a World Class Center status for 2011.

ABPM President Roxanne McCreery says Ericsson Studio met very high standards to be designated world class.

"Ericsson Studio got us thinking in new and exciting ways about the nature of what makes a center world-class," she says. "Ericsson Studio is brilliant and, for us, completely different."

The award was presented by Amy Russom of US firm Autodesk, a previous winner of the award. She said jurors were enthusiastic about Ericsson Studio’s fresh approach to the concept of visitor centers.

"The very name ‘Studio’ rather than ‘Center’ suggests that creation happens here,” she said. “With its theater/backstage theme, this is a space that pays homage to the creative process and invites its customers to participate and see themselves as an integral part of that process."

Ericsson also collected the Innovation in Sustainability award at the same ceremony. Jurors paid particular praise to the heat exchanger in the Ericsson Studio, which recycles heat from electronic equipment to warm the center.

Charlotta Mantell, Creative Director within Ericsson’s Experience Marketing department, says the company is delighted with both awards.

"Putting the visitor first in a welcoming, engaging, relaxing and inspiring setting that promotes dialog and creativity is what we wanted to achieve with Ericsson Studio," she says. "We wanted visitors to be surprised in a nice way by what they experience and to get away from traditional expectations of corporate experience centers or hosted presentations."

Mantell adds: "We wanted to stimulate visitors to think differently about certain topics on their journey through the studio and have their minds opened in a truly unique way. Alongside excellent feedback from visitors, the World Class award shows we are achieving our objectives.

"It is also nice to be recognized for our sustainability efforts, as these are an important part of our thinking."

The Ericsson Studio opened in Kista, Stockholm, at the end of August 2010.

Ericsson Experience Centers are also operational in Madrid, Spain; Rome, Italy; New Delhi, India; with two facilities in the US – at Silicon Valley and Dallas.

Research initiative strengthens service innovation

Over three years, Ericsson will co-fund a leading research program, focusing on innovation in long-term customer relationships
Service innovation and the execution of innovation initiatives are increasingly important for business growth and competitiveness
Together with international industry partners, Ericsson will participate in academic research and service development
Today Ericsson announced that it has formed a partnership with the Service Research Center ("Centrum för Tjänsteforskning" or CTF) at Karlstad University in Sweden, one of the world’s leading research institutions focusing on service management and value creation through service.

Over the next three years, Ericsson will co-sponsor research aimed at identifying the origins of service innovation: how innovations are created and the process for developing totally new concepts – also known as discontinuous service innovation. The researchers will also look into how resource configuration, ecosystems and work processes can support the execution of innovation initiatives.

Paul Bergström, Head of Strategy and Marketing at Ericsson’s Business Unit Global Services, says: "We see service innovation as key to maintaining our leadership within telecom services. Our partnership with CTF gives us an opportunity to share our experiences from supporting networks with more than 2 billion subscribers while also collaborating with academic experts studying a dynamic part of our industry."

Professor Bo Edvardsson, Director of CTF, says: "We are proud that Ericsson has chosen to strengthen its cooperation with CTF. This partnership boosts our ability to develop relevant service-innovation models based on scientific rigor."

Jan Färjh, Head of Ericsson Research, says: "Services is an emerging area of research, so it is vital to identify the right partnerships. With Ericsson Research being one of the academic leaders in this area, we are confident that our collaboration with CTF will yield valuable results for both our organizations."

Having registered more than 27,000 patents, Ericsson’s global team of researchers is constantly improving on today’s technology and creating breakthroughs that will shape tomorrow.

Ericsson is also the undisputed leader in telecom services, with more than 60,000 service professionals working in 175 countries. We manage networks that serve more than 800 million subscribers worldwide, and altogether support networks with more than 2 billion subscribers.

Ericsson Money Services brings connected mobile money to Europe

Ericsson Money available across seven European countries
Connected mobile money services that make sending, receiving and spending money on mobile phones easy and instant
Money transfers are now more like mobile communication, enabling convenient, instant and safe access for families, social sharers, cash-only consumers and non-domestic workers
Plans to broaden availability of Ericsson Money and connect with other similar services globally
Today, Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) Money Services launches the first of a number of new mobile money services, Ericsson Money, across seven European countries. Mobile phone users in the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland and Sweden can sign up from today at www.ericssonmoney.com to send and receive money to and from friends and family and withdraw cash. This is the first step toward bringing a full suite of convenient, cost-efficient, secure and instant mobile financial services to consumers globally.

As money transfers become more like mobile communication, our mobile phones will become central to not only our social lives, but also our financial lives. After easily creating a safe and secure mobile wallet online, users will be able access their money safely from the Ericsson Money network through their phones.

Ericsson Money today enables people to send and receive money instantly and withdraw cash - such as parents to their children at university or on their travels using the handset as the access point to their personal mobile wallet. Transferring money to family and friends who are just around the corner, at a café, or even in a different country will now be as quick and easy as sending a text message.

For consumers, the services will offer greater freedom of choice, access to money and a faster and more convenient way to share money with friends and family. People who can benefit immediately include:

Families: parents can send money to their children away at university, on holiday or on a gap year
Social sharers: people can conveniently share the cost of a meal, settle small debts and transfer money between friends and family
Cash-only consumers: consumers used to transacting only with cash can take a first step into banking
Non-domestic workers: overseas workers can send money home to their families without having to use postal or personal cash transfers, which are often time-intensive.
Ericsson Money Services plans to make Ericsson Money available to the rest of Europe soon. In the near future consumers will be able to connect with other similar services globally (via Ericsson Money Interconnect), making sending money as quick, easy and natural as sending a text message a reality for people around the world.

Before too long, it will be possible to make secure bill payments, shop online and pay in retail stores instantly through Ericsson.

Semir Mahjoub, Ericsson Vice President and President of Ericsson Money Services, says: “Ever since mobile phones went mainstream they have become the backbone of our social lives. We text, we tweet, we instant message, we connect via social networks for millions of hours per month. For many people today, accessing information and services on the mobile is as instinctive as taking the next breath.”

“To Ericsson, it’s logical that as connected consumers in every other part of our lives we should have the same freedom of choice, access and availability in our financial lives. Simply having a friend’s phone number, irrespective of where he or she is in the world, will open up access to financial services and mobile money in a new way. It’s an exciting time for a new industry and we are really looking forward to accelerating the pace at which individuals around the world can benefit from globally connected money services in their everyday lives by making money transfer more like mobile communication,” Mahjoub concludes.
