Study: Difficult to keep with on Twitter, Facebook friends
It is easy to find all these friends on your social networks, but follow with them can be very difficult.
A study conducted by researchers at Indiana University exchange rate the maximum number of friends, a user can really keep contact with on sites such as Twitter and Facebook to approximately 150 people.
Bruno Gonclaves and his colleagues studied the web of 380 million tweets sent by users of Twitter of 3 million over four years and concluded that early people tweeting most and increasing their number of friends Twitter until they become overwhelmed and walk back, focusing on the contacts they have stronger to connections. The point of saturation, researchers refer to it, is located approximately 150 friends.
British anthropologist Robin Dunbar predicted that same number than the maximum count of friends a person should be able to manage based on his study of other primates, and he did in the 1990s, long before that Twitter was never designed.
Social networking has allowed us to greatly expand our collection of casual contacts and knowledge, but when it comes to real friendships and regular social contacts, we are limited in how much we can follow.

Drupal 7 and SQL Server Spatial Data
In a previous post, I explored integration between Drupal 7 and SQL Server Reporting Services. In this post, I’ll examine how you can take advantage of the fact that Drupal 7 can be installed on SQL Server to store geographic data using SQL Server 2008’s spatial data support, and also how you can integrate Bing Maps and Twitter geographic data into your Drupal site.
Microsoft introduced support for spatial data in SQL Server 2008 (see some of my past posts for details), and given that you can now install Drupal on Windows with a SQL Server content database, it makes sense to use this support to extend your Drupal site to include content with a geographical element. The scenario we decided to use when exploring this idea was a site for a local arts festival that includes the ability to publish details of events, including their location. However, you could easily adapt the idea for any content that has a location-based element. The video shows the solution we created (you can also view the video on YouTube).
Our solution not only incorporates spatial data that is stored in SQL Server, but also uses the Bing Maps control to visualize the spatial data, and retrieves tweets that include a geographic location from Twitter. This sort of “mash-up” approach where data and services from multiple sources on the Web are combined to create a rich user experience is the very essence of today’s most cutting edge Web applications, and when combined with the social/community-based publishing capabilities of Drupal it can be used to create some pretty compelling compelling solutions.
The diagram below shows the high-level architecture of the solution. Note that the SQL Server database forms the “data hub” of the application, storing the geographical data from both the Drupal content and the related tweets (which are retrieved and cached in the database periodically using the Cron scheduler in Drupal).
At the heart of the solution is a set of custom Drupal modules that we implemented in PHP. These are packages and installed in the Drupal site to add the required spatial data functionality. The first module we created, and the one on which the others all depend, is a module named GeoField that defines a Location field type that can be included in Drupal content types. The Location field type stores a geographical Longitude-latitude point in well-known text (WKT) format, which can easily be instantiated as a SQL Server geography data type instance. The module also defines a widget for setting Location values, which consists of a textbox and a Bing Maps control. Users can enter an address in the text box and geocode it using the Bing Maps API, or they can right-click a point on the map and reverse-geocode the address. The code to do the geocoding is implemented in JavaScript as described in a previous blog post. The following PHP functions define the field info and schema within Drupal:

Note the reference to the Bing Maps API and to the BingMaps.js JavaScript file, which includes the code used to handle the user interaction with the Bing Maps control.
The next task was to create a GeoEvent module that defines a content type for a festival event. This content type includes a Location field as well as more standard Drupal fields, such as a title, image, description, tags, and a simple text field to specify the date and time of the event.
The final module to be created was the GeoMap module, which defines the Event Map page on which events and tweets are plotted. The code in this module includes the following function, which retrieves the events from the Drupal database and returns them as a GeoRSS feed that can be imported into the Bing Maps control by client-side JavaScript code.

Note that the query used to retrieve the data uses the SQL Server geography type’s STPointFromText function to instantiate a geography instance from the WKT representation of each location, and the AsGml method to then convert that geography instance to Geographic Markup Language (GML) format. This enables the code to simply embed the GML representation of the location into the GeoRSS feed (since a GeoRSS feed is in effect an XML representation of a collection of GML entities). If no locations are found, a placeholder location is created to avoid returning an empty feed.
The client-side JavaScript to request this feed and display the results as a layer on the Bing Maps control is in a script file named EventMaps.js, which is referenced by the Drupal page:

Note that if the layer contains only a placeholder location (because there were no events), the location is deleted to produce an empty map.
The GeoMap module also includes a function that queries Twitter to return any tweets containing a specified hash-tag (which the administrator can set in the settings for the module). These tweets are then inserted into a table in the SQL Server database. The table includes a geography column in which the location of the tweet is stored.

Note that the Transact-SQL query executed by the code uses the SQL Server geography data type’s GeomFromGml function to convert the value retrieved from Twitter into a geography instance before storing it in the table. This function is called by the Drupal Cron scheduler, so the table of tweets is updated periodically.

As with the Reporting Services demo I blogged about previously, this solution we built was based on pre-beta releases of Drupal 7 and the related SQL Server driver for PDO and SQL Server module. To avoid the inevitable versioning issues that tend to arise with pre-release code dependencies, I haven’t includes the full source code. The plan is to publish it on CodePlex when the final release of Drupal 7 and the associated SQL Server components is available. Until then, hopefully you’ll find this article useful as an insight into the kinds of spatial data solutions you can build with Drupal and SQL Server.

McAfee's Predicted Security Threats for 2010
McAfee recently released a report that predicts potential online security threats for 2010. To summarize, the anti-virus and computer security company, which is based out of Santa Clara, California, sees an increase in threats from social networking sites, banking security, and bot nets. In addition, they see increases in attacks targeting users, businesses, and applications. However, the findings weren't all negative. McAfee says they expect an increase in law enforcement and its effectiveness in fighting cybercrime.
As social networking sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, become increasingly popular, they'll most likely become a breeding ground for cyber attacks. On top of the increased number, the attacks will be more sophisticated. Facebook users are particularly vulnerable due to the number of third party applications used. Games and other applications are popular and most people will trust an invitation from their friends without using caution. But that invitation could easily be malware or something else designed to harm your computer. There's really no way to protect yourself other than avoiding the third party apps such as quizzes and games.
URL shorteners such as bit.ly and tinyurl.com are also expected to become a target of cybercrime. These tie-in to social networking because most people use them to post links to their profiles. The websites shorten a normal URL into a smaller one that will fit in almost any space and is especially popular on Twitter, where you only have 140 characters to gets your message across. One major problem with these smaller URLs is that they can't be previewed, so clicking on one at random could lead you to somewhere you don't want to be. This makes it a very easy target for crooks.
Due to the popularity of Microsoft products, cyber criminals have been taking advantage of them for years. However, as programs such as Adobe Reader and Flash become more popular, McAfee expects they will become a bigger target, taking over the top "honor" from Microsoft. In 2009, Adobe Reader saw an increase of problems due to security holes, leading the company to take a more proactive approach to patching up problems.
Email attachments have always been a problem when it comes to spreading malware and that threat is expected to continue and even get bigger. The company expects an increase in specific targets when it comes to email, and those include journalists, corporations, and individual users who could easily be convinced to download an attachment that is hiding a Trojan or other bit of malware.
Other projected problems include banking Trojans. Normally used to get your financial information, McAfee expects them to become so advanced that they will start interrupting transactions and even withdrawing money from your accounts. 2009 already saw an increase in banking cybercrime, with many Trojans making their way past strong bank security. Botnets are also expected to be a threat. McAfee calls them a "leading infrastructure for cybercriminals" and says they are "used for actions from spamming to identity theft." While they are harder to track down due to their ability to move from computer to computer without a central base of operation, there has been some recent success in shutting them down.
Despite all the many threats, McAfee does project an increase in law enforcement's ability to track down cybercriminals. Even so, there are steps you should take to protect yourself. Purchasing security software and keeping it updated is very important and something everyone should do. Keeping your PC up-to-date with Microsoft patches that protect your operating system, office suite, and browser is also important. You should also be sure that you are aware of all the latest threats and realize what's at risk. Exercise caution when opening files or downloading applications.

Twitter - It's All About Me?
Two Rutgers University Professors, Mor Naaman and Jeffrey Boase, set out to examines user behavior on social media websites such as Twitter and what they found is, well, probably not all that shocking. After looking at over 3,000 tweets from more than 350 Twitter users, it turns out, about 80 percent are what the professors now call "meformers," or people use who post updates on their everyday activities, feelings, thoughts, emotions and social lives. The other 20 percent, the "informers," are more about sharing information such as news articles and interacting with their followers. As a matter of fact, informers usually had more friends and followers than meformers. The median number for informers was 131 friends and 112 followers whereas meformers had a median of 61 friends and 43 followers.
While carefully documenting the details of their research, the professors determined that there are nine different types of Tweets: information sharing, self promotion, opinions and complaints, statements and random thoughts, me now, question to followers, presence maintenance, self-referential anecdotes, and anecdotes about others. A majority of tweets - about 41 percent - can be classified as "me now" tweets with random thoughts, and opinions and complaints coming in as the second most tweeted items.
The research doesn't portray Twitter users very positively, but most previous research done on the social medium has had the same findings, if not worse. Some studies have gone on to call Twitter users "narcissists" or claim that nearly half of all tweets are "pointless babble."
So what else did the study find? Informers usually mention other users more often by making @replies. About 25 percent of tweets come from users' mobile phones. Of those posted from phones, over half (51 percent) tend to be "me now" messages. Females were also more likely to post the "me now" messages; 45 percent of female users posted them whereas 37 percent of men did.
