Inphi sampling CMOS 100-Gigabit Ethernet PHYs

Inphi Corp. (NYSE: IPHI) has announced the availability of a pair of 100-Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) CMOS PHYs. Based on Inphi's iPHY architecture announced in March, the IN112510 100GbE CMOS Gearbox and IN012525 100GbE CMOS Clock Data Recovery (CDR) chipsets integrate multiple channels along with transmit and receive functions.

The iPHY IN112510 is a single-chip PHY for 10:4 gearbox applications for 100GbE and OTU4 100G line cards with 25- to 28-Gbps electrical interfaces. According to Inphi other technical features include:

* Support of 100GBASE-LR4/ER4 and OTU4 28-Gbps operation for OTL4.4
* Optimized for low-latency
* Programmable transmit and adaptive receive equalization on all SerDes interfaces with fine granularity and control to enable allow performance that surpasses IEEE CAUI, CEI-11G SR and CEI-28G VSR specifications
* Self-test and loopback modes
* Eye-scan and monitor on all SerDes receiver interfaces for link margin and stress testing in a lab or production test environment
* Package design enables denser line cards
* Optimization for CFP2-based line card designs
* Single-chip, low power device for optimized CFP modules.

Meanwhile, the iPHY IN012525 CDR offers the following features, according to Inphi:

* Support of 100G BASE-LR4/ER4 and OTU4 28-Gbps operation
* Programmable transmit and adaptive receive equalization on all SerDes interfaces with fine granularity and control to enable performance that surpasses CEI-28G VSR specifications
* Self-test modes
* Eye-scan and monitor on all SerDes receiver interfaces for link margin and stress testing
* Optimization for CFP2 modules.

Both devices are now sampling, Inphi reveals.

According to Jag Bolaria, senior analyst at The Linley Group, "We are expecting strong growth in the 100GbE market, especially in the enterprise and data center segments, with the advent of smaller form factor, lower power 100G optical modules. When coupled with Inphi's low-power, highly integrated CMOS 100G PHY products, the market's move to high-density 100G systems will become a reality."

BT announces 114 new exchange locations, taking the opportunity defend itself against monopoly claims too

Another 114 exchange locations were announced today for other providers to use and supply fibre connections from. They should be up and running by Autumn next year.

Local monopolies benefit no-one and no public funds should go to supporting them.

Over the weekend, TalkTalk claimed BT was trying to assert a monopoly on the fibre industry, having previously suggested its rival was charging too much for infrastructure.

TalkTalk's group commercial director David Goldie told the Observer he thought BT was using up public funds to gain control over the industry.

BT has been particularly bullish in arguing it is committing substantial funding to fibre in the UK and is opening up its infrastructure – something others are not.

Today, it again took the opportunity to promote its fibre efforts and state it was not attempting to monopolise the industry.

“No other company is doing as much as Openreach to bring super-fast broadband to the UK,” said Mike Galvin, Openreach managing director for next generation access.

“There is no substitute for experience when it comes to fibre deployment and we have more experience than anyone. We are also committed to offering open and equivalent access so that customers can benefit from a competitive market. Local monopolies benefit no-one and no public funds should go to supporting them.”

Openreach has committed to providing two-thirds of the UK with fibre by 2015. It wants the support of the public sector to expand its rollout.

GE Energy Accelerates Telecom Infrastructure Energy Efficiency

Samsung Rival To iPhone 5 Lite Landing On O2 Soon

http://static.itproportal.com/photos/samsung_galaxy_w.jpgUK mobile phone operator O2 has posted a "coming soon" page for the Samsung Galaxy W, which is an updated version of the Samsung Galaxy S and slots between the latter and the Samsung Galaxy S2.

More importantly, it will almost certainly be the smartphone from Samsung's portfolio that will go face to face against the iPhone 5 Lite or the iPhone 4GS.

The handset comes with a 3.7-inch WVGA capacitive touchscreen, a super LCD rather than an AMOLED one; That's a tad smaller than the Galaxy S but on par with the competition like the Desire S or the Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo.

The SoC however is one of the fastest single core on the market, a Qualcomm Snapdragon clocked at 1.4GHz which should run circles around the Hummingbird one in the Galaxy S.

Other features include Samsung's latest Touchwiz 4.0 user inteface, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, 512MB RAM, 4GB onboar dstorage, a five megapixel rear camera with HD recording and a front VGA one, 440 hours standby on 3G and up to 470 minutes talktime.

The phone will be available from O2 from September onwards and will very likely replace the Galaxy S altogether.

Internet company creates £100,000 data centre in North Wales

An Internet Service Provider has invested more than £100,000 in a new state-of-the-art data centre, the first of its kind in North Wales.

Hosting UK, a St Asaph-based company with clients worldwide, will use the facility to reduce its reliance on expensive server space in Manchester and London while expanding its range of services.

Running costs for its North Wales data centre are little more than a third of its English city equivalents, enabling the company to recoup its investment in just one year.

Itself a registered FibreSpeed Service Provider, Hosting UK is already looking for new premises for a second facility in North Wales.

Hosting UK’s new data centre has a dedicated 1 Gigabit connection to the FibreSpeed fibre-optic network, linking the operation with the company’s network in Manchester and London where it takes in multiple high speed connections to the rest of the Internet.

Managing Director Phil Parry revealed that without FibreSpeed, his company would have been forced to leave North Wales in order to grow.

“I’d been looking at relocating to Manchester or Liverpool, even Chester, because we simply couldn’t get the network bandwidth we needed here,” he said.

“When I heard about FibreSpeed I decided to wait. The network gave us the bandwidth we needed at an affordable price, so it made the data centre possible.

“The cost of running data centres has been rising and rising. I knew the cost of operating one here would be lower. In fact they’re about 65 per cent what they are in Manchester and London, so it was a great decision to make.”

The data centre has two independent connections to two Points of Presence on the FibreSpeed network. Operating in tandem, they ensure an uninterrupted service.

It also benefits from emergency power, a sophisticated fire suppression system and energy efficient ‘free air’ cooling which uses ambient outside air temperature to keep the facility cool.

On-site staff supervise the facility on a 24/7 basis, providing security and access to some customers who choose to maintain their own servers. Most users prefer Hosting UK’s fully managed service.

The company is migrating some of its server space from Manchester and London to North Wales, though operations will remain in the two cities.

It has already launched its Exchange2Go business email service and thanks to its extra capacity will soon offer VPS2Go, a range of virtual private server packages for businesses looking for a managed IT service.

WiFi-only phone: not a new idea so getting it past Apple's lawyers might be fun

http://www.telecomtv.com/images/thumbs/news/734612_samsung-galaxy-wifi-3-6_big.jpgWe imagine the WiFi-only Galaxy Android yelling "Yah ne nah de nah nah" as it speeds past Apple's Cupertino HQ in a drive-by patent infringement. By Ian Scales.

With all sorts of things WiFi in the news (see - WiFi: the next Shaw Thing) it was hard not to highlight Samsung's latest offering - the Samsung Galaxy WiFi 3.6. So we haven't.


It's basically a Galaxy Smartphone without a SIM, it costs £149 for the 8GB model and £169 for the bigger 16GB version. It has a 1GHz OMAP processor, runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and will launch - in the UK at least - in early October.

In concept it's VERY much like the iPod Touch, so another patent infringement case might be on the way.

But in any case, it's not new to Samsung as we've already had the Galaxy S Wifi 4.0 at the beginning of this year, The numbers, by the way, don't delineate progressive technical advance, but screen size. With this Galaxy, Samsung is aiming down-market, straight into iPod Touch (3.5 inch screen) territory.

The important thing here is the price. On Amazon the cheapest iPod Touch 4 is on special at £164 while the equivalent 8Gbyte Galaxy model is going to cost £149, and no doubt less once the discounts start.

The Galaxy is everything a mobile phone should be minus the SIM and the wireless capability. That means it can do Skype voice and video calling (or similar) over WiFi and has access to Android Market for all the apps. As long as the user spends a lot of time within range of a WiFi hub it's hard to see why it wouldn't appeal to a cash-strapped teen (or its parent) as an alternative to yet another expensive mobile phone contract.


It also seems sensible for it to be sold with some sort of prepaid WiFi hotspot capability as well. Anyone who knows anything about that, let us know below.

Sony Ericsson Nozomi smartphone for 2012

In order to mark the difference from other Sony Ericsson models, the Nozomi will most likely become their first unit to sport a dual-core processor at 1.5GHz. In case you don’t know, other Sony Ericsson models such as the Xperia come with a weaker 1GHz single-core processor.

The Nozomi model also features 1GB of memory RAM and in the inside you can find an internal memory of 32GB. If that isn’t enough storage capacity, there is also a microSD slot that supports memory cards of 32GB. As for the display screen of this model, it is a touchscreen of 4.3-inches that offers a 1280×720 resolution at 720p HD, with 342ppi – points per inch.

At this time we don’t have any information about the price range of the Sony Ericosson Nozomi, but we’ll keep you updated as more details arise.

Reviews of Apple MacBook Air, T-Mobile MyTouch 4G Slide, Rocket 3.0 Laptop Stick and more

http://www.statesman.com/multimedia/dynamic/01104/T_Mobile_4G_Slide_1104768c.jpgIt's Labor Day. Maybe you're kicking back with a refreshing drink and trying to avoid Immobilizing Heat Wave 2011 by staying inside and doing some online shopping.

Here are a few tech items — an ultra-thin laptop from Apple, an Android smartphone and wireless broadband stick from T-Mobile, and Time Warner's highest-speed Internet tier — that have caught our eye this summer and are worth a look.

Apple MacBook Air 13-inch 
(mid-2011 model)

Last month, Apple unveiled new models of the MacBook Air, its very thin, very light, 11-inch and 13-inch laptops. The Air is wedge-shaped and even thinner and more impressively slight than it appears in photos.

The recent refresh adds better performance with significantly more powerful Intel processors, Thunderbolt technology — which promises faster transfer speeds and more versatile ways to connect devices — and a backlighted keyboard.

But the biggest advantage the MacBook Air has is that it comes standard with a solid-state drive (SSD) instead of a hard drive. Imagine my surprise when, in everyday tasks like opening Web pages or editing photos, the Air seemed speedier than my new hard-drive-based MacBook Pro, which costs about $1,000.

The 13-inch Air provided to us for testing by Apple was fast and capable. The most impressive thing I discovered: You can reboot a MacBook Air and have it ready for action in 16 seconds on Mac OS X Lion.

What doesn't it have that its more expensive Pro counterparts do? No optical/DVD drive, no HD-quality webcam (the Facetime camera is standard-def), and smaller drive capacities, the trade-off for faster SSD technology. The 11-inch model, which starts at $999, replacing the old white plastic MacBook, has a 64-gigabyte drive and comes with 2 gigabytes of RAM. The 13-inch model, which starts at $1,299, has a 128-gigabyte drive, an SD-memory slot and 4 gigabytes of memory standard.

The MacBook Air doesn't have the graphical horsepower to run the latest video games, but for even video editing and major multitasking, the Airs no longer seem stymied in their ability to keep up with most laptop users.

T-Mobile MyTouch 4G Slide and Rocket 3.0 Laptop Stick

T-Mobile's MyTouch 4G Slide has a modest-sized touch screen (3.7 inches), an illuminated slide-out physical keyboard with nicely spaced-out keys and a dedicated camera button on the side, all without too much bulk.

The camera button is a key feature on the Slide because the phone's biggest selling point is its 8-megapixel, dual LED-flash camera, which can record 1080p video and has a variety of shooting modes (close-up, action and night, for instance). Outdoor photos and pictures taken in decent conditions do look quite good, especially compared with most smartphone cameras.

Battery life on it is better than it is on larger Android phones but still is not quite as good as the latest iPhone. It costs $199 with a two-year contract. If you're in the market for a 4G phone on T-Mobile's network, you take a lot of photos and you need a physical keyboard, this one's a good match for you.

Another product running on T-Mobile's 4G wireless network is the Rocket 3.0, a laptop stick that can deliver Internet to Macs or PCs via USB. Unlike WiFi hotspot devices like Verizon's MiFi or T-Mobile's own Mobile Hotspot, the Rocket can only deliver service to one computer at a time.

In Austin and New Braunfels (where I work and live), the 4G service was reliable and I got 15 Mbps download speeds and 1.5 Mbps upload speeds. That seemed great to me until I saw that T-Mobile is advertising the stick as being capable of 42 Mbps download speeds, which I never came close to achieving. Speeds in Austin were less consistent; even in the middle of downtown Austin, it was sometimes as low as 8 or 9 Mbps, with upload speeds dropping to about 0.5 Mbps.

The device costs $80 with a two-year contract; mobile broadband plans start at about $40 monthly for 2 gigabytes of data.

Time Warner Cable's
Road Runner Wideband Internet service

I've been a customer of Time Warner Cable's Road Runner Internet service since the late '90s and, even on the mid-tier Standard service I've been on, one complaint I've rarely had is speed. Even HD video streaming has worked fine for me, and the price has stayed consistent (about $50 a month without any other TWC services bundled in).

In July, Time Warner introduced "Wideband" Internet in the Austin area, which promises speeds of up to 50 Mbps, more than twice as fast as the service I was getting. Time Warner installed the service in my New Braunfels home for a trial, and while the installation was quick and professional, the first week with Wideband was rocky. Until I figured out what was going on, I spent a week wondering why the network would suddenly slow to a crawl or become unavailable when I tried to multitask on the Web; it turned out to be a modem setting the installers hadn't warned me about to prevent hacking.

Once that option was disabled, download speeds were consistently in the 35-50 Mbps range, according to Time Warner's speed test website and other independent speed test sites I used. But I only noticed the speed difference when downloading large files or with multiple streams of music or video. Slow websites still are slow if the logjam is on the other end, and your computer's processing power, memory and Wi-Fi bottlenecks still are going to be big factors in the speeds you get, no matter the service. We also had a few network interruptions in our area and had to reboot our modem at least six times during a month and a half to restore Internet service.

Where I did notice a huge improvement, though, was in upload speeds. With Wideband, a set of three 50-megabyte files that used to take about 25 minutes to upload to Dropbox.com now took less than five minutes.

Wideband costs $99 a month (or $4 more if you don't have other Time Warner Cable services). For home users with typical Internet needs, it might be overkill. In fact, Time Warner just announced that it's upgrading its Standard and Road Runner Extreme tier speeds for existing customers at no additional cost. Upgrading your Wi-Fi network, making sure your computers aren't too slow to take advantage of Internet speeds and looking into a less pricey tier of service (somewhere in the $40-$60 range) might better fit your needs.

Italy confirms 4 bidders for 4G spectrum auction

A total of four companies applied by the 29 August deadline for submitting bids for participation in the tender for frequencies in the 800, 1800, 2000 and 2600 MHz bands in Italy. According to a statement from Italy's Ministry of Economic Development, bids were submitted by 3 Italia, Telecom Italia, Vodafone Italia and Wind. The same companies were admitted to the bidding in late July, as well as the wireless operator Linkem. The opening of the bids will take place on 30 August, while the auction will start on 31 August.

Government approves Telecom asset split plan

The structural separation of Telecom into stand-alone retail and network companies is a step closer, with the Government approving Telecom's plan to split up its assets.

The company's plan is to split in two so it can participate in the Government's $1.3 billion ultra-fast broadband initiative.

The Government has signed-off on the company's proposal to split its assets and liabilities, although the de-merger still has to be approved by shareholders.

The Minister for Communications, Steven Joyce, says if that happens, Telecom will be the first telecommunications company of its size to undergo such a split-up.

Under structural separation, Telecom will compete with other retailers while the new Chorus company will be the main telecommunications infrastructure provider.

SK Telecom to Spend $924 Million for 4G Spectrum in Korea

Aug. 29 (Bloomberg) -- SK Telecom Co., the largest mobile- phone carrier in South Korea, won the rights to use a key frequency for fourth-generation phone service for 995 billion won ($924 million) in the country’s first auction of spectrum.

The carrier won 20 megahertz of airwaves in the 1.8- gigahertz frequency band, the Korea Communications Commission said in a statement today. KT Corp. dropped out of the race because the bidding was too competitive, the Seongnam, South Korea-based carrier said in a statement. KT was awarded 10 megahertz in the 800 megahertz range for 261 billion won, according to the statement by the company.

Bids for the 1.8-gigahertz band had almost doubled since the auction began on Aug. 17, as South Korea’s two largest mobile-phone carriers sought to secure more spectrum amid surging data use before they begin 4G wireless services. SK will use the frequency based on the long-term evolution, or LTE, technology, the carrier said in a statement.

“The band is globally preferred,” Park Jong Soo, a Seoul- based analyst for Hanwha Securities Co., said. “SK didn’t have a proper LTE-related frequency. It’s better for them in the mid- to-long term to get this frequency at a high cost than to lose it.”

Shares in SK rose 2.1 percent to 147,500 won as of 11:38 a.m., while the benchmark Kospi index gained 2.7 percent. SK Telecom began LTE service in Seoul in July and plans to expand coverage nationwide by 2013.

Mozilla chair admits problems with rapid release schedules

http://media.techworld.com/cmsdata/news/3299514/Firefox_thumb160.jpgThe release of a version of the Firefox browser every six weeks is found to be disconcerting and at times potentially unmanageable by enterprises, said the chair of the Mozilla Foundation, which maintains the browser.

The compatibility of addons with new versions is also another issue, said Mitchell Baker, chair of the non-profit organisation. But quicker releases of new versions ensure that new capabilities are not delayed for nearly a year before they can be delivered to people, Baker said.

Mozilla recently adopted a rapid release process that it said would allow a new release of Firefox every six weeks.

"Before Mozilla instituted the rapid release process, we would sometimes have new capabilities ready for nearly a year before we could deliver them to people," Baker said. Web developers would have to wait that year to be able to make their applications better, she added.

A browser is the delivery vehicle for the Internet, and the Internet moves very quickly, Baker said. But if the browser is to be the interface for the Internet, it has to be more like the Internet. That means delivering capabilities when they are ready, through a rapid release process, she said.

There is however work to be done to make the rapid release process smoother and hopefully more useful to more of the user base, Baker said.

Users have however been asking for a middle ground between frequent releases of versions, and the delay in addition of new capabilities by almost a year. Kees Grinwis, commenting on Baker's blog post, for example, suggested a long term support (LTS) version of Firefox.

Mozilla could release an LTS version as a major release, say Firefox 7, and then release the versions between the LTS versions as 7.x versions, said Aashish Arora. "Make consumer installations silently auto update in the background while disabling auto update for enterprises," Arora added.

Others are dismissive. Users are finding that broken addons and UI (user interface) changes are making Firefox difficult to use, commented Dan. "All of these people are turning their attention to alternatives," he added.

Mozilla acknowledged in June that a key challenge for enterprises is that they need to certify their websites, apps and addons each time Firefox is updated. "This can take weeks or months. Security is also paramount, enterprises need access to a version that includes all known security fixes," it said.

Mozilla said it was exploring solutions that balance these needs, with active discussion in the community. The foundation however made clear that its focus was on consumers.

"The Mozilla Community has focused our efforts on the needs of the individual user, and prioritised the product roadmap and features accordingly. However, as is the case with many technologies, loyal Firefox users and their IT departments have sought to bring Firefox into their places of work," it said.

Comtech Telecom. Gets $1.3 Mln Order For Satellite Communications Equipment

Comtech Telecommunications Corp. (CMTL: News ) announced that its Tempe, Arizona-based subsidiary, Comtech EF Data Corp., has received a $1.3 million order for satellite communications equipment to support a customer's network expansion in Asia.

The company stated that this order included several models of Comtech EF Data's satellite modems including the CDM-625, the CDM-700 and the DMD20 models.

Microsoft’s Skype Buy: Still Not OK’d but How to Battle Google

Are both companies collaborating or battling each other?

It's hard to determine. The Google/Motorola Mobility deal likely won't conclude until early 2012, the principals said. But the Microsoft-Skype deal, already approved by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, may be stuck before the European Commission.

Clearly, both Microsoft and Google are targeting a sort of "holy grail" of mobile platforms that seamlessly communicate all matters of voice, data, video, social media and entertainment --- not to mention advertising --- because it's where they see growth.

But Microsoft, the No. 1 software company, may encounter some rough weather in Brussels. Neelie Kroes, the European Commission's antitrust commissioner, was around for Microsoft's 2004 agreement to make Windows interoperable with other platforms. She also demanded Microsoft pay a record $1.3 billion in 2008 for failing to comply with it.

Kroes is also a huge fan of Luxembourg-based Skype, which sold itself first to eBay in 2005 for $3.1 billion. In 2009, eBay sold a 65 percent stake for $1.9 billion to private equity groups including Silver Lake, Index Partners, Andreesen Horowitz and the Canada Pension Plan. Now all parties, including eBay and Skype co-founders Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis, are unloading the entire company to Microsoft for $8.5 billion, its biggest-ever acquisition.

Last year, Kroes discussed her affinity for Skype, which she said lets anyone with a connection communicate. "Vote with your feet and leave your mobile provider," she told a conference. "The message will be all the more powerful when it comes from the bottom up and not the top down."

Skype CEO Tony Bates, formerly a senior vice president of Cisco Systems, recently predicted the European Commission will OK the Microsoft acquisition by the fourth quarter, but Kroes surely will cast a jaundiced eye on any move by Microsoft that impacts European clients.

Microsoft, which has had slow adoption of its Windows Phone 7 OS, previously licensed it to Finnish giant Nokia, the one-time mobile phone leader now ranked third in second-quarter market share behind the Apple iPhone and Samsung Electronics' Google Android phones, IHS estimates.

Nokia, which had used the Symbian OS popular in Europe, is slowly transitioning to Microsoft's OS.

Buying Skype, though, would put Microsoft squarely into the telephone business. Last year, Skype handled 190 billion minutes of traffic, up 68 percent from 2009, estimates TeleGeography. That was a giant chunk of an $83 billion international voice market that handled about 413 billion minutes and one of the few sectors that grew year-over-year as traffic growth for the AT&Ts and Verizon Communications eased.

If Brussels OKs the deal, Microsoft plus Skype would instantly become one of the world's biggest telecommunications providers, with as many as 170 million registered users, along with strong ties to the enterprise market. Notwithstanding Microsoft's huge consumer appeal, the company dominates the enterprise sector; it also has a partnership selling communications equipment from Avaya, the Alcatel-Lucent spinoff.

Skype already works with Facebook's 500 million users, so Microsoft's overall positioning ought to be strengthened. In search, Microsoft is wielding its Bing offering with support for Yahoo, but is still nowhere near Google in views and advertising.

Meanwhile, the European Commission, as well as the U.S. regulators, need to approve the Google -Motorola Mobility deal. Last week, Google CEO Larry Page pledged the company will retain the smartphone maker as an independent company and keep Android an open OS to capitalize on its success capturing more than 50 percent of the smartphone market.

GoogleVoice, an offshoot of Grand Central, acquired in 2007, had previously been added to Gmail, as a free service, so the Mountain View, Calif.-based search leader is no stranger to telecommunications. More recently, it launched Google+ as a rival to Facebook and claimed 500,000 users in two weeks. Participants in GoogleCircles are able to communicate by voice as well as online.

But Google itself is also under scrutiny, which it has acknowledged, from both Washington and Brussels, where regulators like Kroes are exploring if it might be behaving in an anti-competitive manner. Google has acknowledged the probes, without comment. Earlier this month its legal team hired a senior FTC lawyer for its own staff.

Much of the focus on the Motorola Mobility takeover was on Google's appetite for Motorola's 17,000 patents for wireless spectrum and telephony. But given the prowess of Motorola Mobility CEO Sanjay Jha, the real bet could well be on scoring yet another turnaround, making Google's Motorola phones No. 1 in the market vs. Apple's iPhone.

Consumers will vote in the marketplace, especially if they find a product they like as much as the iPhone and the iPad priced cheaper than Apple's always more expensive offerings. First, though, consider what could happen if both deals are stopped.

Reports cited a $2.5 billion breakup fee if Google-Motorola Mobility collapses. Apparently, there is no breakup fee for Microsoft-Skype.

Given the rapids both deals face, there could be some rough sailing for both tech giants. Google shares, trading Tuesday around $517.70, are about 8 percent down over the past week, whereas Microsoft, around $24.63, is off about 2 percent.

One irony: Marc Andreesen, the co-author of Mosaic and co-founder of Netscape Communications, enjoys more perspective than anyone else in all these deals. He's a director of eBay and Facebook, as well as Hewlett-Packard, which exited the TouchPad market last week. He's also a name partner of Andreesen Horowitz, which should make a fortune selling Skype to Microsoft.

BT WiFi available in more British pubs

By using the connections, consumers can access the Heineken Hub, which is a unique area of the internet that will gain exclusive content from i, the Independent's sister newspaper.

The introduction of this WiFi will enable consumers to access broadband services quickly with any wireless PC, tablet or mobile phone. Also, location-specific content will be available through the service.

With the addition of these 200 pubs, BT's hotspot numbers will rise to over three million, making it the largest network in the UK. Of these, more than 200,000 sites have been added during the last three months.

Rick Lawrence, marketing manager at Heineken UK, said: "The partnership with BT reinforces the brand's reputation as a leading player in the development of technology.

"The WiFi initiative will provide excellent exposure for Heineken among its key target audience and build greater affinity between the brand and its consumers."

WiFi access is entirely free to more than five million BT Broadband customers, as well as users of iPads, iPhones, iTouch, Android, Samsung, Blackberry devices and smartphones via other BT partnership agreements.

Commenting on the new partnership, Chris Bruce, chief executive officer at BT Openzone, said: "Using WiFi to deliver free and exclusive content, Heineken is engaging and exciting pub goers and will undoubtedly increase business. It's an exciting time to be involved in hospitality marketing."

Virgin Media, one of BT's market rivals in the broadband sector, recently confirmed that its fibre optic cable network will pass a minimum of 100,000 extra homes this year.

The provider extended its cable infrastructure to an extra 73,000 homes in the first six months of 2011, meaning that residents in locations such as Derry and Staines could access 100Mbps broadband.

Satellite loss deals 'severe blow' to Russia: experts

The Express-AM4 satellite was launched at 1:25 am Thursday (2125 GMT Wednesday) from Russia's Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan to provide digital television, telephone and Internet services across Russia.

Shortly after the launch, connection was lost and Russia's space agency Roskosmos said Thursday that it was still trying to locate the orbiter.

Weighing 5,700 kilogrammes at launch, the Express-AM4 was the most powerful telecommunications satellite ever built in Europe, according to the Khrunichev Space Centre, which developed the satellite together with France's Astrium.

Analysts said that besides being the latest embarrassment for Moscow's space programme it also jeopardized key development goals like switching to digital television.

"This is a big blow to Russia's domestic agenda and a disappointment for Roskosmos and the communications ministry," said military analyst Alexander Golts.

The communications ministry acknowledged in a terse statement that the satellite's possible loss dealt a "severe blow to the telecommunications industry."

Express-AM4 was primarily supposed to provide digital broadcasting over the vast reaches of Russia and was a major part of a government plan to develop television services over the next six years.

"The programme of switching to digital television which our leaders are toying with would have to wait a long while," Golts added.

The satellite was "practically the first in Russia to be made entirely abroad," and was two to three times more powerful than other Russian telecoms satellites, said Sergei Pekhterev, head of satellite communications group AltegroSky.

The satellite's capacities were "sold out before it was launched, which is very rare," he told AFP. It was also supposed to bring Internet access to far-flung regions where on-ground network coverage is too expensive or impossible, he said.

It was designed to bring television coverage to 95 percent of Russians, many of whom have access to just one or two channels at the moment.

"This is not a tragedy -- we will still have communication -- but the industry will be set back by two or three years, that's how long it would take to build and launch a new satellite," said Pekhterev.

Roskosmos on Friday declined to confirm whether the satellite was permanently lost or if it failed to detach from the upper stage rocket, which was located Thursday evening. It should have separated as planned on Thursday morning.

Newly appointed Roskosmos chief Vladimir Popovkin recently announced that Russia would like to reduce its focus on manned flights and engage in more commercially rewarding spheres such as telecoms and Internet satellite launches.

Losing the Express-AM4 would also be a let-down for the new management of Roskosmos, which has struggled with a series of embarrassing failures in recent time.

Popovkin's predecessor Anatoly Perminov was sacked in April after three navigation satellites missed their orbit and crashed into the ocean.

HTC Sensation 4G Android 2.3.4 update lets you take screenshots

T-Mobile is releasing this update in waves and it’s expected to continue rolling out until the end of September. Among the improvements in the update are better battery life, increased performance and better screen responsiveness. There was however one neat feature that T-Mobile left off the release notes. That feature is the ability to take screenshots.

I will never understand why taking screenshots is not standard on every smartphone. It seems like such an obvious thing to do. If you want to take screenshots with the Sensation 4G, you have to hold the power button and press the capacitive home button at the same time. You’ll hear a shutter followed by a notfication that says the picture was saved to the “camera shots” portion of the gallery. I went ahead and took a screen of Gadgetell from the mobile web browser to give you an idea of what the images will look like.

The photos are a little rough around the edges and they won’t fool anyone with a keen eye, but it still gets the job done.
