Huawei Unveils Multi-Service Optical Transport Network Prototype with Over-10T Capacity

Ultra-large capacity enables operators to address ultra-broadband challenges

Huawei, a leading telecom solutions provider, unveiled its over-10T MS-OTN (multi-service optical transport network) prototype at the WDM & Next Generation Optical Networking 2011 event in Monaco. The device can be upgraded to manage capacity of over 20T, and, for the second time, Huawei has broken the industry record for OTN cross-connection capacity.

"This achievement is Huawei's latest effort to address our customers' challenges by providing leading transport network solutions,"said Christian Chua, President of Transport Network, Huawei. "We believe that this device will significantly alleviate pressure from our customers' operations and will help them tackle long-term challenges resulting from the uniformed grooming of multi-services and services with high-levels of traffic."

The prototype features ultra-large capacity, uniform service switching, all-service access and 400G per slot, which fully supports the future evolution of OTN networks. Additionally, the prototype supports a uniform intelligent control plane for λ/ODUk/packet/VC services, which significantly enhances the reliability and durability of networks and reduces maintenance costs for customers.

With ultra-broadband, cloud computing, and All-IP evolution causing a considerable impact on network capacity, traditional OTN networks are faced with the growing pressure of traffic grooming that has resulted from increased network bandwidth and networks being predominantly taken up by IP-based services. Ultra-large-capacity and MS-OTN device allow operators to address these challenges and ensures smooth transition to All-IP with its traditional OTN features. Packet-based features such as Ethernet Layer 2 switching and MPLS-TP cross-connection have been added to MS-OTN, addressing the issue of carrying and cross-connecting multi-services, especially for packet-based services.

Huawei and KPN International Launch Coherent 100G Commercial Application

Huawei, a leading telecom solutions provider, and KPN, the leading telecommunications and ICT service provider in the Netherlands, today announced that they have successfully deployed coherent 100G services on the KPN International WDM (wavelength division multiplexing) network, which runs through the continent of Europe and uses Huawei's next-generation WDM systems. Providing an ultra-high-speed transport link between London and Amsterdam – the largest-bandwidth-demanding cities in the network – the commercial application of coherent 100G services on the network helps KPN International prepare for future network service growth. To address the challenges that come from the rise in high-bandwidth services, KPN International and Huawei have made longstanding and collaborative efforts in the coherent 100G transport field.

The coherent 100G technology is the latest technology for transmitting high-speed 100G services, providing ultra-large dispersion tolerance and polarization mode dispersion tolerance. With this technology, 100G services become more adapted to fiber transmission. Services can be transmitted at a higher rate over a longer distance. At an astonishing transmission rate of eight Tb/s, it takes only one second to download 240 DVD movies, each of which is two hours long.

Huawei’s solution for KPN International enables hybrid transmission of 100G services and the existing 10G/40G services on the network, smoothly upgrading the network while not affecting ongoing services. The solution also creates a tenfold increase in the service rate of a single wavelength, which helps KPN International effectively resolve the large-bandwidth challenges and maximize return on investment. With support for G.652 and G.655 fibers, the Huawei coherent 100G solution provides 100G service transmissions over a distance of 613km without having to use an electrical regeneration site, demonstrating excellent performance on the KPN International WDM network.

China Telecom and Huawei Deploy World's First End-to-End 100G WDM System

Huawei, a leading telecom solutions provider, and China Telecom, today announced the successful deployment of the world's first end-to-end 100G WDM (wavelength division multiplexing) system. The system establishes an ultra-broadband transport link between metropolitan hubs Nanjing and Wuxi in the Jiangsu province of the Yangtze River Delta.

Huawei's 100G solution satisfies the demand for large bandwidth, while protecting live network investments and allowing networks to be upgraded smoothly without affecting existing services.

In Jiangsu, Huawei's end-to-end 100G solution enables bandwidth pool solutions to be seamlessly integrated and hybrid 100G and 40G services to be transmitted from Nanjing to Wuxi over hundreds of kilometers without having to use an electrical regenerator. Huawei's 80-channel system with 40 Gb/s per channel solution and Tbit-level OptiX OSN 8800 are adopted in this OTN network. The successful transmission of 100G services indicates a 2.5-time increase in capacity of the live network to 100 Gb/s per channel (80 channels), which lays a solid foundation for the rapid development of backbone telecommunication services in Jiangsu.

Huawei Receives Prestigious IEEE Excellence Award

Huawei,a leading telecom solutions provider,announced that it received the "Excellence in Standards Development Award" by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). This award recognizes Huawei's outstanding contributions in setting the IEEE 802.1AS standard.

IEEE 802.1AS is a time synchronization standard that is applied to metropolitan area networks (MANs) and access networks in Ethernet mode. This standard specifies the protocol used to ensure that synchronous transmission is implemented for time-sensitive services,such as audio and video,and across Ethernet-bridged and virtual-bridged networks where the transmission delay is fixed or symmetrical. Huawei MediaPad: 7-inch tablet in the operating system Android 3.2

Huawei has showcased the CommunicAsia 2011 tablet called MediaPad.This model is based on the new operating system, Android 3.2 Honeycomb, which is still not announced, but expected more optimized for a 7-inch plate.Huawei MediaPad, indeed, is a 7-inch plate.It is based on the dual core at 1.2-GHz processor, Qualcomm.The tablet is able to play HD video 1080p, via HDMI and it can be viewed on the big screen.

Who will showcase new hardware at CommunicAsia 2011?

Every year around this time in Singapore, the telecommunications world descends on the island-state to participate in the CommunicAsia tradeshow. Though the main reason for the show so companies can make contact with each other for business purposes, manufacturers also take the opportunity to showcase their new products and technologies. Here's our quick take on whether some of the major exhibitors will be announcing new devices.

Who's out?
Samsung has said that it will not be participating in the tradeshow this year. the company stated that its own Southeast Asia, Oceania and Taiwan forum held in March this year was sufficient for its business needs. The other Korean electronics giant, LG, had already pulled out of CommunicAsia in 2010.

Nokia
One of the most important announcements was that Nokia would be involved in CommunicAsia this year. The mobile phone market leader has typically held its own Nokia Connection event before the start of CommunicAsia but has decided to conduct Connection at the tradeshow this year.


Will Nokia CEO Stephen Elop announce new Windows Phone? (Credit: Microsoft) The company's CEO, Stephen Elop, will be here to give the keynote address. This suggests that Nokia has an important announcement to make. The company has said previously that it's trying to get new Windows Phones out by the end of the year, which leaves us wondering if it will unveil the handsets at CommunicAsia.

New devices? Nokia seems heavily invested in the show and given its track record for Nokia Connection, is certain to release new products. Hopefully one or more of these products will be Windows Phones.

Sony Ericsson
Though it doesn't have a booth at the show, Sony Ericsson is hosting its own event on the second day of CommunicAsia. It appears to be a big one, too, with media from the region invited.

New devices? We expect so. However, the importance of the announcement probably won't be on the same scale of the Xperia Play or Arc.

RIM's major product announcements typically originate from the US or UK. We expect the company to showcase its already-unveiled products such as the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet and BlackBerry Bold 9900.

New devices? Not likely.

Huawei
Huawei makes a whole range of telecommunications products and is a mainstay at CommunicAsia. Aside from equipment meant for operators' infrastructure needs, the company will also showcase consumer devices such as handsets, tablets, modems and connectivity dongles. Huawei is making no secret of its intention to showcase new products with an initial unveiling of some smartphones earlier this month (covered here) and will be announcing a new tablet a day before CommunicAsia 2011.

New devices? Definitely.

ZTE
Another Chinese company at the show is ZTE, a close competitor of Huawei. We expect to see ZTE's full range of products at CommunicAsia 2011 including handsets, tablets and dongles. The company had also previously showcased some interesting concept handsets, so that's something to look out for.

New devices? Very hopeful.

Huawei Receives Innovation Awards for Contributions to CDMA Development

Huawei,a leading telecom solutions provider,announced that it accepted two 2011 CDG Industry Achievement Awards from the CDMA Development Group (CDG) in recognition of its innovative approach and contributions to CDMA2000®. Since launching the world’s first CDMA/LTE Dual Mode commercial network in 2008,Huawei is the sole vendor to successfully provide end-to-end SingleRAN CDMA/LTE solutions.

Huawei was jointly awarded with China Telecom for its customized CDMA2000 solution for high-speed railway network coverage. The solution was commercially deployed by China Telecom for the high-speed railway between the cities of Shanghai and Hangzhou,and test results showed that end-users on a train travelling at 352Km/H,were able to access stable and smooth voice calls,efficient web browsing,video on demand and other multimedia services.

Pocket WiFi S II - Adnroid smartphone from Huawei for EMOBILE

Japanese telecom operator EMOBILE presented a new Android smartphone model for their clients - Pocket WiFi S II (S41HW), the production of a Chinese company Huawei.

This model is based on a model from Huawei, as IDEOS X3, has removable panels, and positioned by the operator as the lightest smartphone in the Japanese market with a weight of 104 grams.

Huawei has shown MediaPad in a strange teaser

Huawei has introduced a teaser video of its tablet MediaPad. Unfortunately, except for the fact that the video looks a bit strange, to say something is definitely not so simple. Huawei X1 Gaga appeared on the FCC site

Huawei is preparing to release another simple and inexpensive smartphone. Model called Huawei X1 Gaga (Huawei U8180) appeared on the website of the Federal Communications Commission for the United States. The device supports wireless second-and third-generation standards, GSM (850/1900MGts) and WCDMA (850MGts) and running the Android operating system version 2.2. This is Huawei's third annual CSR report. The report was compiled in compliance with the G3 guidelines of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), and it discloses Huawei's efforts and practices in a systematic and standardized manner. Major core indicators were used. The application level of the report is B+.

As outlined in the report, in 2010, Huawei took proactive measures worldwide to fulfill its social responsibilities as a global corporate citizen. To achieve these efforts, Huawei worked to optimize its CSR management system, which ensures closed-loop management starting from strategic planning and continuing through to execution.

In her "Message from the Chairwoman," Huawei's Chairwoman Sun Yafang noted, "An enterprise can survive, sustain its growth, and contribute to society only if that business consistently aligns its core values and operational responsibilities with its social responsibilities, rather than seeking merely short-term achievements."

Appendix: Excerpts of Huawei's 2010 CSR Report

1.With "enriching people's lives through communication" as its vision, Huawei applied its professional ICT experience to help bridge the digital divide. In 2010, Huawei joined the U.N. Broadband Commission for Digital Development, collaborating with leading global companies, and actively contributing to global social and economic development through broadband development. Huawei continued to grow the "Telecom Seeds for the Future" Program, enhancing communications skills in Malaysia, the Philippines, Australia, Indonesia and Bolivia. In Africa, Huawei donated telecom lab equipment worth USD 1 million to three national universities in Ghana, providing opportunities for the students to apply what they learn in the classroom to practical situations.

2.To promote the development of the global low-carbon economy, Huawei signed the Voluntary Green Agreement with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China, promising to reduce the average energy consumption (AEC) per unit business volume of shipments by 35 percent of 2009 levels before the end of 2012. Huawei's total shipment of products in green packaging exceeded 40,000 pieces in 2010, resulting in a reduction of annual timber usage by 6,100 cubic meters and carbon emissions by 12,000 tons.

3.Huawei pays ongoing attention to improving the CSR of its suppliers and partners. In 2010, Huawei held its second CSR training conference for its global suppliers. The leaders of over 170 global suppliers and partners, as well as representatives of world-renowned operators, such as British Telecom, Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone and France Telecom, attended the conference.

4.Huawei continues to improve its employee welfare system in order to fully enable the development of its employees. In 2010, Huawei spent a total of CNY 1.97 billion on employee welfare. Huawei also continues to focus especially on the career growth and development of its female employees. Huawei's R&D department held the first female development conference on "growth, progress, and excellence."

5.Huawei actively contributes to the development of communities where it operates. The company is committed to efforts and actions that enable it to make positive contributions to welfare, education, disaster relief and environmental protection in local communities. After a major disaster occurs, for instance, Huawei arranges for its employees to arrive at the site quickly, so that they can assist local telecom operators in repairing affected sites and recovering communications as soon as possible. In 2010, Huawei contributed USD 1.055 million in cash to flood-stricken countries, such as Venezuela, Columbia, Mexico, and Vietnam, to help local residents with disaster relief. After the 2010 earthquake in Qinghai’s Yushu County, Huawei employees voluntarily contributed nearly CNY 6 million in direct funds in addition to necessary materials through the company's Charity Association to help in the reconstruction of Yushu.

Optimus Stockholm - Submitted (almost)

Optimus today presented a small set of national bloggers, the Optimus Stockholm , a low-cost Android smartphone with an interesting and very appealing design.
The Stockholm Optimus is 3.5G mobile phone (7.2 Mbps), comes with the Android OS 2.2.2, has a capacitive touchscreen of 2.8 inches with QVGA resolution, 3.2 megapixel camera, GPS, Wi-fi, digital compass , accelerometer, proximity sensor and FM radio.
Optimus, who beat all expectations (and competition) with the Optimus Boston, now back to the load over a smartphone brand, for just € 99.90 or € 50 + soon to 600 points.

Huawei Receives Three Accolades at Global Telecoms Business Innovation Awards 2011

Huawei, a leading telecom solutions provider, today announced that it has won three awards at this year’s Global Telecoms Business Innovation Award 2011.

Huawei was honored for its collaboration with both Aero2 and Vodafone in its advancement of LTE commercial networks in the ‘Wireless network infrastructure innovation’ category at this year’s awards. The award is a further significant milestone for Huawei since it won the ‘Significant Progress for a Commercial Launch of LTE by a Vendor’ category at last month’s LTE summit. The Global Telecoms Business Innovation award is further proof that Huawei’s innovation and commercialization in LTE have been widely recognized by the industry as driving forward this new technology.

The network, which was jointly deployed by Huawei and Aero2, is the world’s first LTE FDD and LTE TDD co-platform network and is also the first LTE TDD commercial network in the world. The successful collaboration between Huawei and Vodafone in LTE demonstrates how LTE will contribute to significantly improving mobile broadband coverage and help to eliminate the "digital divide". Both of these LTE networks were deployed using Huawei’s industry-leading SingleRAN LTE solution.

As a result of the collaboration, KPNI can now lease out the function of the platform to potential MVNOs and MNVs - thereby eliminating the need to deploy and develop their own BSS.

Creation of Australian Board marks a world-first for Huawei

John Brumby, Alexander Downer and John Lord have been announced as independent Directors to sit on Huawei Australia's newly-established Board of Directors. In the latest step for Huawei's localisation strategy, the announcement marks the first time Huawei has created a local Board with three independent Directors anywhere in the world. The Board will be charged with overseeing Huawei's local strategy and developing further inroads into the Australian market.

"Huawei is now a major player in the Australian market, so the formation of a local Board was a natural step for our business," said Huawei Corporate Affairs Director Jeremy Mitchell. "The three independent Board Directors will bring unparalleled experience in public administration and business, and will play a central role in steering Huawei's Australian operations, as well as advancing Huawei's business proposition to industry and Government."

The full Board will be comprised of the three independent Australian Directors, alongside Huawei Australia CEO Mr. Guo Fulin, Huawei South Pacific President Mr. Jeff Liu, and two members from Huawei's global Board: global Director Ms. Chen Lifang, and global Executive Director Mr. Li Jie. John Lord will act as Chairman of the Board.

"This is ideal timing for Huawei to create a local Board," said Chairman John Lord, a professional Director and current Chairman of DMS Maritime Services. "The company has now grown to a point where it is amongst the top telecoms vendors both locally and globally, and the Australian Board will ensure Huawei continues on that growth trajectory."

The Board will meet in Australia and at Huawei's global headquarters in Shenzhen, China.

"At a time when Australia's business relationships with China are more important thanever, Huawei has made an important investment in the Australian market by creating this local Board," said Alexander Downer. "80% of Huawei staff are now locals, and the technological innovation pouring out of Huawei's global R&D centres will have a positive impact on telecommunications in Australia."

"Having worked with Huawei to commit $250,000 towards the Next Generation Technology Training Centre with RMIT University, Huawei showed it was willing to train local students and tackle Australia's ICT skills shortage," said Mr Brumby. Huawei now partners with all major Australian operators including Vodafone, Optus, vividwireless, Telstra, AAPT, Primus, TPG, and more. Huawei has also forged partnerships with Australian Universities including RMIT to create a Next-Generation Technology Training Centre, as well as supplying fibre-optic broadband technology to the University of Melbourne's Institute for a Broadband Enabled Society (IBES).

"Huawei has made great inroads into the Australian market and has built strong business relationships with all of our partners, whether they are telecoms operators, enterprise customers, universities, or government organisations. The local Board will help us to further familiarise our partners and customers with Huawei's business," Mr Mitchell said. Huawei's Australian business has grown substantially since the company opened its first office in Chatswood with just 20 staff in 2004. Over 80% of Huawei staff are now locals, with staff numbers set to double from 300 at the end of 2010 to more than 600 by the end of 2011.

Huawei together with "Angstrom" start production of telecommunication equipment in Zelenograd

The Russian company "Angstrom" and the Chinese company Huawei announced the signing of a cooperation agreement and the launch of a joint project to manufacture telecommunications equipment in the Moscow suburb of Zelenograd.

The agreement signed by the Director General of OOO Tehkompaniya Huawei Wang Kesyanom and President of NGO "Angstrom Alexei Tabolkinym, foresees the development of mutually beneficial scientific and technical cooperation in the field of microelectronics, a joint production of electronics and telecommunication equipment designed, inter alia, for building networks, LTE, and the implementation of the finished product carriers and corporate clients in the Russian Federation.

Under the agreement, "Angstroms" to produce equipment under the brand of Huawei's own industrial base to meet modern international standards. In addition to contract manufacture, under an exchange technological potential of the company will jointly develop solutions for telecommunications and communications.

In the first stage of technological partnership "Angstrom" will produce the following equipment Huawei: base stations LTE, equipment DWDM (OSN6800 and OSN1800), access equipment (MA5600T and MA5603T), IP-switch (S2300 and S3300 + S5300), equipment RRL (series RTN ), operator routers (series NE40/NE80/NEx).

Production, design capacity equal to 10 000 articles per year, will be commissioned in the IV quarter of 2011. Within the project "Angstrom" plans only in 2011 to invest in the production of 400 million rubles, and by 2013 will open up additional production facilities in special economic zone in Zelenograd.

For its part, Huawei will provide a unique design and technology, will train experts "Angstrom" and establish a system of quality control. This will allow the company to expand its presence in the Russian market with new opportunities for distribution of its products, following the licensing requirements of key customers and make more efficient logistics of their supply chain.
