Mozilla has made the latest Firefox beta available for download on desktop and Android devices, touting multiple enhancements including more efficient memory use.
The Firefox 7 beta sees Mozilla pushing ahead with its rapid release cycle. Key features in the release include a reduction in the use of memory, as well as increased responsiveness, startup and page load times.
"The JavaScript garbage collector works more frequently to free up memory and improve performance when you have many tabs open or keep Firefox running for a long time," said a Mozilla blog post.
Nicholas Nethercote, a Mozilla developer, claimed that Firefox 7 generally uses 20 to 50 per cent less memory than Firefox 4, 5 and 6.
"Firefox 7's memory usage will stay steady if you leave it running overnight, and it will free up more memory when you close many tabs," he said in a blog post.
"This means that Firefox 7 is faster (sometimes drastically so) and less likely to crash, particularly if you have many web sites open at once and/or keep Firefox running for a long time between restarts."
Mozilla has also included a web timing specification so that developers can identify site improvements by measuring page load times.
Firefox Sync has been enhanced, and now offers faster synchronisation of bookmarks and passwords.
Meanwhile, Firefox Beta for Android has been designed to use memory more efficiently. The portable browser can now restore sessions, and includes improved Firefox Sync functionality and the ability to copy and paste.
