We’ve heard rumors that Verizon has been planning to switch to tiered data plans for a while now, making us examine closely how much 4G connectivity will cost from all the major US carriers. Big red’s staggered pricing structure has now been confirmed in detail, however, by a company spokesperson and is expected to kick in for new customers on July 7th.
Fierce Wireless reports that there will be various sizes of data buckets, each with a separate monthly fee attached. The low end plan costs $10 a month for just 75MB. $30 gets you 2GB, $50 buys 5GB, and $80 gets you 10GB. Be advised that going over your monthly data allotment will cost an extra $10 per gigabyte.
Current Verizon smartphone owners with existing unlimited data plans can keep them if they renew their contract on or after July 7th. Verizon’s mobile hotspot service will also be altered. Now a free service on select LTE-capable handsets such as the Samsung Droid Charge, HTC Thunderbolt, and LG Revolution, existing customers will have to fork out an extra $30 per month for unlimited LTE tethering. New customers of 4G or 3G phones will only have the choice to pay $20 a month for 2GB of Wi-Fi tethered data.
